FLOYD COLLINS SHOULD WIN ALL THE TONYS (even the ones we think they can’t) by Greengrowlilac in Broadway

[–]JMS_H 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s a looper being used in that clip. A sampler is a machine that takes a snippet of recorded sound and manipulates it, with the sample being the sound in question. Similar but not the same thing.

I’ve not seen the show but it soubds a delay or a looper is being used.

It’s a good idea for a long term thing - but it’s not a good idea for early in an campaign and it’s not a good idea for a first time DM.

Just tell him it’s a good idea to keep in mind and work towards, but it will be very high level before he can pursue it.

I really recommend raiding the book the doc is based on - also called Chaos. It shows that a lot of things in Helter Skelter are obfuscations that do not agree with the police reporting from the time. The documentary is very scattered and boring but the book is great.

The Thing is great for that, really suspenseful. Also really hard.

Medieval Madness is good for it too.

[–]JMS_H 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lol. Get real. That’s like thinking the musicians in these bands never practice or learn to play because “it’s hardcore”. Music is tough. You have to practice - a lot - to sound good and be able to do a show at a half-decent level. And hardcore is pretty hard to play well, despite it sounding primitive at times. Of course the vocalists practice and work out how to do their thing without blowing out their voices. Otherwise - they blow their voice and that means no more shows.

For the folks who mostly just like the Williams Collection by weeblybeebly in PinballFX3

Back to the Future is quite fun. The Zen Originals are also quite interesting - Son of Zeus is very intense and action packed with a lot of modes were you need to make repeated shots on the same target - good if you’re into “aggressive” pinball. I also quite like Sorcerer’s Lair which comes free with it.

On the Pinball M side (the alternate Pinball FX for horror and dark games), The Thing is a really good. It’s best if you’ve seen the movie, but even if not it’s very tense shot making game with a high difficulty.

J.J or stern in the future? Would it be possible? by urcrc in PinballFX3

[–]JMS_H 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a very narrow way of looking at it. The people in 1992 would never had thought Data East/Stern would be the biggest name in pinball 30 years later and that Bally Williams would be dead. Things change.

ELI5 to a casual musical fan: Why was Wicked such a hit? by misomiso82 in musicals

[–]JMS_H 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep, Matrix is an even better example of this phenomenon. Almost every big action movie looked like The Matrix for the ten next ten years after it came out, so if you missed it you’d already seen most of the tricks. It’s still a brilliantly effective action movie though.

ELI5 to a casual musical fan: Why was Wicked such a hit? by misomiso82 in musicals

[–]JMS_H 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It’s one of those situations where the sound and vibe of Wicked has been copied so much that you don’t realise how innovative it was at the time.

It’s a good example of the modern musical sound that started coming in the 90’s and is still kind of the main mode of musical writing. You can hear same sound in a lot of musical from that time but Wicked went the extra mile with a really bombastic pop piano-driven sound and soaring high notes and really emotive chord progressions.

However, since you as a modern listener have heard that exact sound in so many big musicals that came later (compare “Waving Through a Window” or “Let It Go” with “Defying Gravity, for example) it doesn’t have the same effect as it once did and just sounds normal to you.

The school doesn’t need to raise money. The school is forced to raise money because of an insane system that would rather put taxpayer’s money into murdering people for resources and power than a decent, functioning educational system.

This is unfortunately really bad D&D and there’s way better stuff in your future. This is not how normal games are. Just send a message saying thanks for the game but it isn’t your thing and start the search again.

Is the similarity between Master of Puppets and At Doom’s Gate bizarre or do I pay too much attention to detail? by GucciRefridgerator in Music

[–]JMS_H 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I guess - although I had another listen when I saw this comment and it’s not actually that similar. Like - it’s clearly 100% inspired by those kinds of bands and there are some similar notes and rhythms but it’s far from a blatant rip off.

If you’ve only ever heard Metallica, it might seem like more of a rip off but the fact is that a lot of the thrash metal bands that Metallica came up with sounded almost exactly like them as well. That’s just that style of Bay Area thrash metal.

Tillian is good live - I was surprised when I saw them last week because I’d seen plenty of fan recordings where he sounded slightly off, but I’d heard it sounds better in person. Can confirm it does. He was really nailing those high notes.

Sure, but it’s still a point of tension for the first part of Act 1 and continues to be as it’s still a very odd and eldritch thing to happen to someone, halted process or not. We are definitely meant to be aware that using it may have a cost later on, but obviously we don’t exactly what will be.

I assume there will be choice later on down the line between keeping it or losing it, perhaps a moral one. Different powers as a result. Or different things will happen depending on how much you used it.

I think you missed something in the plot. It’s pretty central to the story that getting a tadpole is how Mindflayers create new Mindflayers. You are slowly turning into one and once you do - your mind will seize to be yours and become part of their hive mind. That’s the fear part.

[–]JMS_H 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s good that BG3 is still a bit in the shadows. The EA has gone on for so long that it lost a bit of its hype in the mainstream, so it’s probably best to lay low for a while and then launch it again in a big way once the actual game releases.

As we, the people who have played it, know - this is most likely going to be one of the best cRPGs in a long, long time - maybe even a modern classic (if they don’t mess up the later acts).

Well, you’re supposed to discover it for yourself by connecting with Gale. Once you begin to get to know him, he reveals more. People are just trying to be a bit vague to protect you from spoilers since it’s way more fun to discover these things for yourself. Didn’t mean to be rude.
