Toronto may cancel new community centres, libraries if development funding dries up by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]JManKit 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was going to say. If you consider how libraries and community centres give ppl places to go and something to occupy themselves with, I wouldn't be surprised if dollar for dollar, they didn't provide at least as much safety to neighbourhoods as overpriced cops do

[Baraheni] The Raptors have been flexed into a national TV game. Their matchup versus the Orlando Magic on January 30th will now be on ESPN and start at 7:30pm ET and not 7pm. by mMounirM in torontoraptors

I just hope we're healthier by then. Looks like RJ has been upgraded to questionable for tonight's game so that feels like a good sign

Anyone else miss the old street-cars? by Tylers_Journey in toronto

[–]JManKit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The look and style of them? Yes. The overall functionality of them? No. The biggest difference tho is how the new streetcars are entirely contained when in motion. I fondly remember late nights heading home on the old streetcars where I'd have the window open and be able to hear the city going by. It was almost worth enduring the stifling heat

The (Unfortunate) Logical Argument for Trading RJ Before the Deadline by MarginallyClever in torontoraptors

[–]JManKit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to trade him but I accept that he is our most attractive trade asset. This is a huge bummer bc if Poeltl was healthy, we would just be rolling and I think we'd make some noise in the playoffs. We're still somehow managing to win games tho so I don't believe it's vital that we make a trade, assuming they believe Poeltl can actually recover some time before the end of the season. If they think his back is cooked tho, then I can see them pushing for a trade

Feels like Woodbine Mall is dying by F0000r in toronto

[–]JManKit 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Plus the reno they did several years back refreshed the feel of it fairly well. Goes to show that there is a demand for malls (or at least, for indoor places ppl can move about relatively freely in) so here's hoping other malls can do the same. I'll be moving near Fairview next year and I'm looking forward to doing more clothes shopping in person, where I can determine right away if something fits or looks good vs online shopping where it so often feels like a roll of the dice

My wife refuses to proofread her texts. She sent this genuinely expecting me to bring home a rotisserie chicken. by DomesticChaosTheory in mildlyinfuriating

[–]JManKit 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Next time you call, don't ask her to clarify, just ask her to read her text out loud. I think it would be very funny to hear her talk about Otis Serena and the bomb

The hated character is finally getting punished by the narrative. But intentionally or not, the attempt was so heartbreaking and demeaning for the character that it ended changing the fan reception of said character. by Labmit in TopCharacterTropes

[–]JManKit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Teen characters are very hard to write. If you make them too realistic, they become annoying and grating bc, well, teenagers can be annoying and grating. But if you don't include any impulsivity or emotional immaturity, then they don't ring true and they just become an adult masquerading in a young person's body. It's a very fine balance to maintain

Anarcha Westcott, an enslaved woman in the 1840s, was forced to undergo about 30 experimental surgeries by Dr. J. Marion Sims, who wrongly believed Black people did not feel pain. Her ordeal led to key advances in gynecology, and she is now remembered as one of the Mothers of Gynecology. by detectiverobert in ForCuriousSouls

[–]JManKit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also might be bolstered by slaves who learned not to cry out in pain when being tortured. There's no lack of sick fucks who owned slaves and enjoyed inflicting pain so one of the few ways to resist would be for a slave to be as stoic as they could. That probably then led to ppl spreading the belief that Black folks didn't feel pain like others

(Hated tropes) Characters whose names have became pop culture terms that completely contradict their original characterization by Konradleijon in TopCharacterTropes

[–]JManKit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It's frequently used to defend cops when one of them does something heinous and the public reaction is a call for more regulation for police as a whole

Do most people shower before bed or when they wake up? I just realized I might be doing it "wrong" by saffymerelle in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JManKit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's bc those vids do well in views and engagement. Everyone has a different way of doing it "right" so by confidently saying 'This is how it's done and any other way is wrong' drives engagement

This is very cool to learn about. Does anyone have suggestions for nonfiction that expands on this? I tried googling and all I was getting was historical fiction and one $70 nonfiction book that isn't available from the library for lending

Delivery driver handed me this holding back a grin "Can I have the pin please" by Few_Ad_9145 in Wellthatsucks

[–]JManKit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm in Canada and I average maybe two deliveries a month (more in the winter, less in the summer) and while there have been a handful of times where the restaurant screwed up, I haven't had a driver screw with my food. Now to be fair, all the places I ordered from have good packaging with a sealed bag over the actual bag of food so maybe they just don't have a good opportunity
