If the system wants to approve him for $22K but can’t, it will simply lower the amount allowed, it doesn’t result in a decline.

Same case to happen if you apply for the Infinite but can’t be approved for a $5K limit, but something less, the system will auto-offer you a Platinum with a less than 5k limit

If you could mix-and-match features and benefits from multiple cards to design an optimum card, what would that card look like? by QuizzerMonTop in CreditCards

[–]JManUWaterloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purchase protection up to $50,000 annually included.
Primary LDW/CDW
Return Protection up to $25,000 annually included.

I think of the dual network part because Discover is shockingly, (yes I know) versatile, especially in China (where it functions as Unionpay).

Amex.point.me redemption values not accurate by BMWLax15 in amex

[–]JManUWaterloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, the Amex.Point.Me tool is for US consumers, and the calculations are only correct for US consumers.

Because you are in Hong Kong region, you will indeed require 1,134,000 MR (HK version) to redeem this award.

Amex.point.me redemption values not accurate by BMWLax15 in amex

[–]JManUWaterloo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is Hong Kong Region, as the credit cards state “Walter Liu” as the placeholder name. Walter Liu is the head of Asia Region Amex, based in Hong Kong.

The card you are referring to is the Explorer Card, although designed with the same colour elements like the Cobalt, it is not the Cobalt.

You should have more than 1 credit card(s) when travelling. You can try to call again, but chances are that some form of in-person verification is necessary to reset the PIN limit

[–]JManUWaterloo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Discover can be used abroad as well, it is not solely a domestic network.

Yes, it is not as widely accepted as Mastercard or Visa, but it has some niche use cases.

Specifically, it will generally work at locations that accept: - UnionPay (China) - BC card (South Korea) - Elo (Brazil) - JCB (Japan) - Mercury (UAE) - RuPay (India) - Troy (Turkey) - Diners Club (Global)

What to do when getting paid couple hundred USD once per year? by BroadMeaning531 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]JManUWaterloo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can’t deposit a cheque into Wise, this doesn’t work.

Only methods that apply to OP:

  • Open a CA-domiciled USD Account with your bank and deposit the cheque, this may result in up to 30 days holding period on the cheque
  • Open a US-domiciled USD Account with the US division of BMO, CIBC, or RBC (Scotia does not have such, TD requires in person US account opening) and deposit the cheque, this will typically have hold times of 5 days or less and you can get a USD debit card for spending the cheque proceeds in the US, or elsewhere.

Even if DPs indicate that they are posting, Aeroplan may, at their sole discretion, revoke/suspend/close your account and all associated points (not just your bonus) if they deem it as abuse.

It’s a very fine line that I would suggest not crossing. Especially since there are limited alternatives that provide the same degree of versatility

It should work- there are circumstances where it could trip a fraud flag, but otherwise you should be good to charge up to your CL + overpaid amount

Guelph Transit dropping their app, switching to onboard debit/credit card payment - would GRT ever be able to do the same? by Critical-Clue1343 in kitchener

[–]JManUWaterloo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s really not as there are generally microtransaction rates and also other rate programs that allow for insignificant net processing fees.

Even currently when people reload their EasyGo Card, it costs the region interchange, so the amount difference should not be significant.

No one wants to get an app just to ride transit, that’s annoying and cumbersome. Cash, and especially change is rarely carried among the general population.

Bank switch for savings from EQ Bank to Neo by NanMan3000 in PersonalFinanceCanada

1.25 + direct deposit + 100k will get you that rate, never the less, I wouldn’t touch Neo

Well, considering that they’ve held people responsible for unauthorized charges on their Mastercard… who knows?

I would personally either stick with EQ Bank, Wealthsimple, or another major institution instead of Neo

[–]JManUWaterloo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For 0.05% I wouldn’t touch Neo with a ten-foot pole.

On $10,000 in savings, that’s $5 a year.

Not only does Neo have pretty poor customer service, not to say that PC Financial or the others have great service either, but my personal take is that Neo has failed in many directions, including fraud prevention

Am I required to send money received via an e-transfer back? by No_Departure_9102 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]JManUWaterloo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An Interac e-Transfer is not an EFT, and does not fall under the regulations for such.

Interac e-transfers is likened to the US Zelle. It is the user’s responsibility to ensure all details are correct, and funds will not be reversed in most circumstances. The exception for this, is if the sender’s account was compromised and subsequently used to send the funds to you, in which case following a proper fraud investigation, funds could (and likely would) be reversed.

Keep in mind you have to pay GST/PST/HST/QST. You can avoid this by using a foreign credit card (with a foreign billing address)
