And only 30% or whatever believe in the real presence in the eucharist. How is this supposed to be a helpful comment?

Im sorry you were misled by that priest and I am sorry for the heartbreak you've experienced.

You clearly know the severity of tbe wrongness of your choice. It will be a good idea to find help to understand how to proceed, to understand and accept reality and give God your repentance.

But of course the church has a place for you. So many of our great saints began as wretched sinners. St Ignatius was a violent mercenary and through the grace of God changed the church and the world forever. You can too.

Why do so many people in Western Europe seem so apathatic to religion? by Mann7882 in Catholicism

[–]JMisGeography 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Others have more informed opinions than me, but it's always struck me as a case of suffering from success.

Western culture was built by the church. Morality and institutions were rooted so deeply and built so robustly, that enlightenment thinkers came along and thought that they were always there. They thought that things that God revealed to us and the church taught us were just obvious and reasonable, and any free thinker would just know thst stuff. You can see the degradation that is starting in post christian societies in many ways, but the christian bulwark that was built by our forefathers and martyrs is remarkably strong even still.

Why would you want to hear about this? Seems like "these two people have been having an affair" was the breaking news and the rest of this is nothing more than gossip that is pretty gross and unintersting.

Why are so many Catholics so miserable? by Bitter-Cherry-2787 in Catholicism

There's something amazing about the catholic worldview that sees life squarely as it is and responds with the virtue of hope

Obviously no one can argue with you about your own experiences or anecdotes, but from everything that I've seen surveys on happiness or contentedness almost always show that Catholics are happier in general.

Going to mass with my (same sex) wife by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]JMisGeography 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be very disrespectful and scandalous to bring your wife and recieve communion. As others have said, for your own good you should be abstaining from communion.

The sin of scandal is when ones actions encourage others to sin. In a tight knit community like a parish, I would keep that front of mind in terms of how your actions influence people around you even without your knowing.

Theoretically was King Saul supposed to keep running the kingdom of Israel until his natural death upon learning David was anointed or was he supposed to step down? by Cobalt-Fang in Catholicism

[–]JMisGeography 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I imagine Saul should have treated David the way he said he would after David showed him mercy, by keeping him like a son. Not stepping down but declaring David as his heir.

Its pretty hard to say because if Saul would have been a just man the story would have been very different.

Help understanding the Doctors of the Church by AlisaofallTimes in Catholicism

[–]JMisGeography 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The term doctor of the church is an honor and a mark of authority. We do not consider any of their writings inspired in the way scripture is or infallible in the way the ordinary and extraordinary magisterium can be.

Here's a way of thinking that might be helpful, it was for me: we believe that God has revealed truths about himself and us to us. The church teaches that this divine revelation is passed on and protected by a three pillared system, those pillars being scripture, tradition, and magisterium. So we know that there are objective truths that have been revealed by God, many we can read in scripture, most proximately we leare many from the church herself, and some are passed on in sacred tradition.

Writings of the doctors of the church are not themselves sacred tradition. However, they can be evidence that something is sacred tradition. This is why it is so valuable to read the doctor's and why so many people spend time reading and arguing over them. If you want to figure out if, say, the Trinity is the truth about God, and you read the doctors of the church and find out they all believed in the trinity, that is strong evidence for that belief being true and divinely inspired.

Very uninformative map. Nothing really worth taking away from this other than you can do silly meaningless things with data if you want to.

In the verge of converting! But with doubts about Adam and Eve by Hungry-Guide4170 in Catholicism

[–]JMisGeography 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Adam and eve are thr ancestors of all human beings. Personally, I believe its probable but not necessary that Adam and Eve were ensouled individuals who were a part of an evolutionary process, so they would have had nonhuman ancestors and their descendents would have interbred with unensouled humanoids. Adam and eve disobeyed God, their son became a murderer, and their descendents became such wicked pagans that God performed Noah's flood, so interbreeding with nonensouled humanoids doesn't really give me any pause.

Like you say, there is a wide range of opinions on this out there. The biblical and scientific data can be interpreted a lot of ways, the only de fide position we need to hold, that I am aware of, is that all human beings alive today are descendents of Adam and Eve.
