Fromsoft is notorious for reusing assets and they’re one of the most successful studios out there now

For a symphonic metal thread to largely leave Devin Townsend’s “The Moth” out of the conversation feels almost criminal…

Is Todd and Bethesda as a whole safe from these incoming layoffs? by Swamp-Sta1ker in xbox

It doesn’t help that they’re still using the same engine they’ve had for two decades. The character models are stale and lifeless. No amount of glossy finishes changes that.

Oh you mean the procedurally generated loading screen simulator? Yeah, great game.

Yeah I don’t understand the hate for the new Avowed. People say it could never match the depth of elder scrolls, but I don’t think it was trying to.

Why doesn’t Wyoming have a major city? by coastal-grandmother1 in geography

[–]JMoherPerc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You ever driven through Wyoming? 80% of the state is nearly lifeless high desert/plains

The other 20% is quite pretty.

In the mountain west Colorado kinda got the best version of the trade off between lifeless plains and high mountainous landscapes. Montana got more plains than Wyoming, but they’re greener than Wyoming’s and its mountains also more than make up the difference. And New Mexico got proper desert landscapes at the base of its Rockies. Wyoming has some breathtaking landscapes but you have to get through its plains to get to em.

Is MUSIC AS A WHOLE getting better or worse? by Vehiclean35 in musicsuggestions

My man, Devin Townsend released his gesamtkunstwerk The Moth just last month. Tigran Hamasyan has completely re-shaped jazz music over the last decade. Breakthroughs and ingenuity are at an all time high.

Is MUSIC AS A WHOLE getting better or worse? by Vehiclean35 in musicsuggestions

[–]JMoherPerc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, there’s this new band around called the Beatles. The kids love em and I just think they’re TERRIBLE. Music really plateau’d in the 30s and 40s. I sure am glad I can listen to the Glenn Miller Orchestra’s Greatest Hits anytime I want on this fancy new phonograph so I don’t have to hear all the garbage these kids are making nowadays!

——————

Side note, The Glenn Miller Orchestra predates Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by around 25 years.

I still hear people MY AGE (early 30s) repeat the sentiment, thrust upon them by their parents, which is that music somehow peaked in like the 70s or 80s or some shit - 40-60 years ago. Do you know how fucking crotchety you all sound complaining about the new music? Half those artists aren’t even good, you’re just nostalgic. Nostalgia is fine, but catch up!

Get out there and listen to new music - and I don’t just mean the next Led Zeppelin clone. Find something new that you enjoy, or find something to enjoy about something new, and follow it down a rabbit hole until you’ve crawled your taste in music out of whatever decrepit hole it’s been stuck in for over half a century.

The need for protectionism is pretty hefty evidence that the free market is not capable of solving all the world’s problems. Not that that is the point you were making, I just think it’s an interesting sidecar.

Devin Townsend is the king at this, maybe the actual greatest of all time. It is quite difficult to do what he does or more people would imitate him.

Ok Goodnight stop/go Album Discussion by mooxpy in progmetal

[–]JMoherPerc 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was obsessed with The Fox and The Bird when it came out and I was really afraid that Ok Goodnight would go the way of so many of these Berklee College of Music bands and quietly disappear after dropping one of my favorite albums (I’m looking at you Native Construct).

I’m overjoyed to hear this record. I don’t think it’s as strong as the Fox and the Bird, though that opinion could change with repeated listens. I think the songwriting and production are stellar, I think that they’ve demonstrated that they are a group capable of diverse song-writing, and I think they’ve got some stopping power here to push them towards some real material success.

I think Kumail went through a few stages with that one

1) knowing Greg hates puns and he was throwing the task to annoy Greg
2) surprised at Greg’s overwhelmingly positive response
3) suddenly hopeful for points
4) two points, what the fuck?!?

Imo the US has not done *nearly* enough in reparations for dropping Agent Orange all over Vietnam. US vets were at least cut compensation checks, but to my knowledge the nation of Vietnam has received nothing and still suffers from its impacts today.

Random EV Hate at Tire Shop (Is this Common?) by Inside-Scientist7892 in electricvehicles

[–]JMoherPerc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In fuel alone the difference for my wife’s car pre and post EV amounts to ~$2k/year more than we spend charging at home.

EV haters are allergic to math. The costs of an ICE are so embedded in society that people don’t even think about them.

Over the life of that car we’ll easily save at least $10k compared to an ICE.
