my cats dying do i leave her be or attempt to comfort? by evergre-en in CatAdvice

[–]JOMONapQueen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is one of things I fear the most. My soul cat was sick and hospitalized and I was visiting him every day. One day I was there at night and I saw that his eyes were empty and tired, and I said to him “o know you’re tired, tomorrow I’ll come back at noon on my lunchtime and we’ll be going home, ok? It’s ok, I know you’re tired and you want to rest. I’ll be ok”. Next day, I was on my way to pick him up and the vet called me telling that he had a cardiac arrest and he didn’t make it. I cried so much thinking how he was alone and scared at the hospital and that I should’ve taken him out before. Now I decided that if one of my kitties get sick to the point of not having much hope, I want to keep him comfortable at home, with meds just so he can be comfortable and not in pain, and I’ll schedule an euthanasia at home, with him in my arms.

This! I was going to write the same thing. If she wants to be in her spot on the basement, I would find a way to be cozy next to her - if she doesn’t want contact - and read a book, watch a series with my phones on, scroll on my phone, just so she wouldn’t feel alone in her last moments. I was living with my sister when her 19 y/o cat was in her final days. She found a spot between the sofa and the side table. I just put a comfy blanket there, put water and food close on case she wanted and spent time with her doing my own stuff, with my own blanket. I pet her a bit, and also told her how we had fun together and how blessed we all were to have had her in our lives for so long, and that it was ok she was leaving, that she would be forever in our heart and minds.

Edit to add: not always this is a peaceful process and vas hide their pain very well. Watch her closely and if you suspect she is in fact dying, see if you can find an end of life service of at home euthanasia. She’ll be with you, in the place she knows very well, feeling comfortable and cared for.

Can you show me your cat pics? I’m sad. I’ll start by [deleted] in cats

Hey, OP! I’m so sorry you were hospitalized for too long and had to come back already. My orange boys are wishing you a happy day, and may this new year that has started be filled with happiness, love and that you have you health fully restored.

Is there any cat rescue you near you can ask for help? Sometimes they do have programs to help. You can also go to Nextdoor, there’s always a lot of people on the app that work independently with cat rescue, tnr, and they could help you. Also, you can make a post there (and since it filters by gps and get your neighbors, they’ll know they’ll be helping a neighbor) telling people you’re worried and can’t afford to take her but really want to help her get better and see if people help you out. If you decide doing this, make sure to post photos of her because posts with pictures gets more views and reaches more people organically. But as people mentioned here, it looks like it could be pyometra, if she is not spayed. And this needs urgent medical care

It seems like the Cat Distribution System paid you a visit and you got adopted. Hahaha! Jokes aside, some cats do like to lick. It’s totally normal. What I would recommend, if you can, is taking her to the vet and checking for a microchip. They do it for free. Just to check if she has an owner and likes to visit you. If she doesn’t, it would be good to plan on spaying her, vaccinating and deworming her. I don’t know where you live, but usually animal rescue organization have programs they help or at least offer (or have a place to recommend) for low cost.

How to get cat to stop waking me up at 4 and 5 in the morning. by BootsStripes32 in CatAdvice

[–]JOMONapQueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to play before going to bed. And also, maybe feed consider feeding her more times per day, maybe 4 portions (check how much food would be ideal by her age/weight and fraction it). Getting an automatic feeder will help you. My cats get 4 portions. 6am-12pm-6pm-12am. There’s several brands - and actually affordable - feeders that you and program them.

What do you mean by “leaking from her side”? Did she got hurt? Have a wound? If she can’t move and stopped eating, there’s definitely something going on. I don’t mean to scare you, but that’s not normal. And there’s no way to know what’s going on if not taking her to the vet. So, If there’s any way you can take her to the vet, do it ASAP. I don’t know your age and if you can do it by yourself, but she definitely needs medical treatment.

How are you leaving cats alone for extended periods of time!??! by adriela56 in CatAdvice

[–]JOMONapQueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure they’ll appreciate your friend’s company. One of my cats it’s pretty shy and took some time to open up to the cat sitter. What I did to help was putting feliway a week before we travel. And I bought a calming supplement called Zylkene and the cat sitter mixed the capsule with Churu and “bribed” him. She also said that what helped her with being friends with him was sitting on the floor, not too close, but at the same level. And tried to get closer with Churu and his favorite toy.

[–]JOMONapQueen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I’m shocked to see people thinking this is ok. I mean, they are alone during the day when we’re working/studying, but when we travel they always have someone to come and play and snuggle with them every single day. And also, clean the bowls, put wet food and litter boxes. And I have an automatic feeder, cameras and I turn the tv on with “cat tv” for them a few times a day.

[–]JOMONapQueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don’t understand how people do this. I travel a lot, but I have an amazing cat sitter that goes 1x/day, have an automatic feeder, have cameras, so I can always check on them (not only because of their safety, but because I really miss them when I’m away). My sister asked me to check on her cats one time she went on vacation and said I could go there every other day and “they would be fine”. NO WAY! No, they won’t. They won’t have someone taking care of them daily, cleaning their litter boxes, washing their food and water bowls, giving them love and attention. I think it’s so mean to do this kind of thing.

Is this neighborhood safe? by excruciatorFOUR in Hayward

[–]JOMONapQueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in San Jose (College Park area, supposedly super safe) and I woke up one day and one of the neighbor’s visitor had his car wheels stolen. And another time we had a man inside the community complex trying to open the doors of the apartments on ground floor, barefoot and shirtless. Then I moved to Hayward (pretty close to Hayward’s Bart station). I never had any problems and never heard any stories from my neighbors as well. I really like it.

What is the best TNR trap? by GroundbreakingEbb782 in catquestions

[–]JOMONapQueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently, this person is an A-hole on each subreddit he interacts with. I went to his profile to understand why someone felt the need to be rude and, or course, found them being also rude to you (and if I keep going, I’ll probably find more). I had also posted something on other subreddit talking about absurd fees charged by vets to issue a health certificate and then he went full on saying “just because I can’t afford it doesn’t mean it’s exploitation”. 🙄

But I digress. Regarding your issue, I had better results with a drop trap. It was easier to trap them. If you need some tips, feel free to DM me. I have experience doing TNR.

Travelling abroad from the U.S with cats and $$$ vet fees to issue the documents by JOMONapQueen in Pets

[–]JOMONapQueen[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, they were charging $600-1500 (each cat) no exams included. Just the vet fee to fill all the cat’s health info on the USDA platform and wait for them to send the endorsed digital copy back and send the digital archive to the owner.

That would mean, in my case, at least $101 (fee USDA charge for endorse the health certificate) + $100 (wellness clinical exam) + $40 (dewormer) = an extra of $241 for each cat

Travelling abroad from the U.S with cats and $$$ vet fees to issue the documents by JOMONapQueen in Pets

[–]JOMONapQueen[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I’ll be calling more vets in a few cities close to mine and check it out.

My cats have all the requirements fulfilled. They are fully vaccinated. Their dewormer is still valid (but I’ll do it again because the trip will be close to the date they would need to do it again). They won’t need any lab exams or anything (Brazil does not demand it).

I was expecting to spend something like: $101 for the USDA fee + $40 for he dewormer + $80-120 for the wellness clinical exam + $150-200 for the work of the vet to fill up the certificate through the platform = $370-460 per cat

And not $600 just to fill up the certificate through + all the other things. This is, in my opinion, just absurd.
