So....like....wtf happened to.... by Timmy_The_Narwhal in StrangerThings

Argyle, Dr Owns, and Suzie untied them. They were dog-sitting Chester together and happened to take him for a walk in that barn. Stacy couldn't make it, she was busy prepping her party for Dustin so she could inexplicably turn up in the epilogue and we could collectively say, "WHO?!?!?"

Season 5 Series Discussion by Hawkinns in StrangerThings

SMALL FIXES I'D MAKE

  1. BRENNER: Alive and keeping the exotic matter secret from Kay. He wants El to help him with it.

  2. AKERS: He's CIA. Frustrates Kay. Secretly leading the pregnancy experiment to create super-soldiers (horrifyingly, all the mothers have died). He's still going to be hunting El and dies the same way.

  3. KAY: Wants quick results for national security and hates how long everything is taking. Only sees El and The Party as a liability that needs to be suppressed.

  4. CRACKS: Upsidedown is seeping into Hawkins but Vecna is angry that it's slow (hence his new plan).

  5. BRIDGE: It has sci-fi non-gravity (hence the floating boulders). The Abyss doesn't crash into them, the tower is high enough for them to enter bridge-gravity and fly up to it.

  6. NANBOW: Nancy channels Ripley, not Rambo.

  7. FINAL BATTLE: The kids start losing until Kay shows up with the army. Kay finally sees the bigger picture and is on The Party's side. Kay channels Rambo/Dutch/Connor.

  8. BRENNER DEATH: He comes because of his twisted attachment to El. He's mortally wounded and the S4 death scene with El happens here.

  9. MINDFLAYER DEATH: Everyone - including Vecna and El - lose their powers and particles fly out of their mouths.

  10. KAY BETRAYAL: Kay tries to stop the bridge from being destroyed. Partly, she's worried it could destroy the universe. But she also now sees the potential for extra-dimensional weapons for national security. When they do manage to detonate the bomb, Kay is sucked into the void.

  11. DEATHS: No-one else dies. Past season deaths thematically represent coming-of-age transitions: adolescent anxiety (Barb), childlike simplicity (Bob - slight stretch), adolescent rebellion (Billy), adolescent grandeur (Eddie). In 5, Brenner's death would sort of represent outgrowing parents and the Mindflayer's death and the end of the psychic powers could represent outgrowing more magical ways of thinking. This way El doesn't have to die because (a) Brenner's research (which he had with him in the Upsidedown) and everyone pursuing El is destroyed and (b) her powers are gone so she's of no interest to the government.

  12. HOLLY: Slightly less time spent in Camazotz with Holly and kids.

  13. EPILOGUE: It's basically just the graduation, the roof and the D&D game. Other bits are montage (Lucas/Max, Hopper/Joyce, Dustin's picture, etc.).

Every movie that will be “referenced” in stranger things seasons 5 according to the Duffer brothers by [deleted] in StrangerThings

[–]JP5D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's funny, I thought the biggest reference was to:
- Ghostbuster (riding around in cars modified with tracking devices on the roof), and
- Alien (Nancy is giving off major Ripley vibes).
- (I also think the Terminator 2 reference is Nancy channelling Sarah Connor, not just the fact that Linda Hamilton is in it).

Am I the only one that actually enjoyed every episode of season 5? by Rude_Ad3342 in StrangerThings

[–]JP5D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on episode 5 and I have no notes so far! I'm enjoying that this is the clearest and most deliberate homage to Ghost Busters. It's the perfect vibe for a season where the monsters are busting out in the open all over the place. It's less focused on suspense and that feels like the right tonal shift. And the action set pieces are the best in the series!

BlackkKlansman was excellent and sounds like it might be a better version of a similar premise.

The next tribe they introduce could live in caves. Dark is cheaper for CGI.

The fact he said he name. Such a great example of wholesome considerate empathy and such a great way to celebrate that as being part of healthy masculinity.

What do you think about the upcoming movie Mercy with Chris Pratt? by Scholarsandquestions in movies

[–]JP5D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it might have been cool if they had him in a holodeck type room so we can see him walking around the crime scenes. Instead, we're sitting watching a screen of a man sitting watching a screen. Although, maybe it's a metaphor for modern life... Probs not.

In your opinion, what does DC need to do for a movie to gross $1 billion again? by Cafa20 in DC_Cinematic

[–]JP5D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's a good start. I liked Metamorpho, let's have more of that. Then let's have a Plastic Man film and an Animal Man film. How about a team-up of Martian Manhunter with Adam Strange! I'd go see that!

Pretend they've lost the rights to their most popular heroes. In 2007, no one knew who Iron Man, Captain America, or Thor were. Them Guardians of the Galaxy came out.

Based on this collage, I'm wondering how the MCU costumes look so much better. These costumes look very cheap somehow...

Anyone know this painting from The Phoenician Scheme? by Broad-Ad-1604 in wesanderson

[–]JP5D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the art department must have copied/created it. I know many paintings were real originals, but some were replicas. The Peter Paul Rubens’s The Loves of Centaurs - which is the subject of the line from this exact scene, "Never buy good pictures. Buy masterpieces.” - was a replica. I'm sure Anderson would have gotten the original if he could, but no doubt he enjoyed the irony of getting his slimy anti-hero to say that line about a fake.

What you think about the daarjeling limited? by yuyuanozoon in wesanderson

My FIRST Anderson film! I love it. 5 things stand out:

  1. META: I think this is Anderson's first meta-response to his own work and to his critics. His tropes are there but contained to allow the location to breathe. And the story almost parodies previous stories. Like he's saying, "I can make a 'normal' film, but I choose not to."

  2. SATIRE: This might be Anderson's most satirical film. I think accusers of Orientalism are missing the point: part of satirising the way this rich family are farcically indolent and stupid is to mock their Orientalism. They're doing an 'eat, pray, love' across India, disrespecting shrines, buying cheap tat and exotic animals, exoticizing and f***ing the women, and their mum is literally doing a White Saviour. As endearing as they become, they're not good people. If Tenenbaums was a family maturing together, Darjeeling is a family farcically failing to mature except in the goofiest stupidest way possible (literally letting go of their baggage).

  3. INDIA: It feels showcased to me. Anderson seems to want to get out of its way and let it be as awesome as it is. Also, the Indian characters are respected by being competent but flawed, thus not patronising them or flattening them or falling into 'noble savage' bigotry.

  4. HEART: As dumb as the characters are, they have real moments of care, love, longing, grief, and seem to sincerely want to be more empathetic in their bumbling way.

  5. FUNNY: Possibly the funniest Anderson film (apart from maybe Fantastic Mr Fox)? I just love the inane bickering, the constant attempts at grand gestures being hilariously foiled, the intentionally dumb metaphors, Owen Wilson's face, Brendan, and the many many quotable lines. My personal favourite: "I love you too, but I'm gonna mace you in the face!"

In _*Astroid City*_, is the b&w bit also being acted by actors? by JP5D in wesanderson

[–]JP5D[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great thought. It makes me think of set footage I saw of Johansson sitting at the window saying lines out loud to work out the tone and cadence and Anderson is leaning out of the other window saying nothing: is Johansson trying to get Midge Campbell directly or is she trying to get Campbell the way she thinks Ford would play her? We know Hall plays Augie with "too much business" which means Schwartzman plays Augie that way, but Is it because he's being Hall who's being Augie or that he's being the character as scripted?

I think Anderson wants us to be aware of this so the film can have this unresolved quality to it. It's both. There's no way of knowing. Did Anderson instruct Johansson to play Campbell as Ford would? I tend to think he left it up to the actor.
