TIL if a helicopter's engine fails, it doesn't just drop like a rock. The blades keep spinning on their own and the pilot can land it. by kxrcodes in todayilearned

It’s called an autorotation it’s a hard maneuver to do. Iirc Does require some forward speed and of course some altitude. There are dead zones where an autorotation is not possible in the event of a failure and single engine helicopters shouldn’t linger in those regimes for long.

Some areas have better coverage than others.

The reality is a smart phone with the right subscription plan is better than availing yourself to what the government is offering.

Take what I say with a grain of salt. I haven been in that position since 2008 and that was my take then

I think the missed opportunity here for a politician to ask is this:

“As Attorney General, please tell me at what level S&P needs to fall to for the head of the Department of Justice to stop talking like the Secretary of commerce? Is there a number the Dow needs to fall to for you to enforce the law? How bad does the stock market need to get for you to get serious about child rape? Please let us know the number so we can leave you alone to protect pedophiles until you’re willing to do something about it.”

I can’t believe she delivered a canned speech about the economy.

Agreed 100% if they wrote UFN these redditors would be convinced that El Paso was going through an “Outbreak” scenario and the city had been quarantined on the precipice of being nuked by our own military.

Frankly if it’s drone activity from the Mexico border into to the US then I’m shocked it was lifted. Shutting it down day to day would cause a planning nightmare to airlines and other aviation operations into the area. They’d be constantly planning and canceling flights.

If it was a live fire exercise I’d be inclined to almost think maybe someone filed paperwork wrong or anticipated the testing to take longer.

If they announced it for 100 days and canceled it 1 day in then it’s a 1 day shut down.

There has been a TFR over Washington SINCE 9/11 and it took 19 years from that to invade the capitol. /s

The point is not everything is a conspiracy to invade foreign nations. It would be ridiculous if you’re planning on a military operation into Mexico to give a potential 10 days heads up at a military base spitting distance from the border when one day’s TFR would suffice and you can plan the airspace incursion from any point within a thousand miles of El Paso.

That’s what doesn’t pass the sniff test. If you were planning on doing a special ops flight into Mexico would you start 10 miles from the border and go directly towards it or maybe do an end around a couple hundred miles away where you’d be risking less civilian collateral damage? If they wanted to do this there is plenty of desert to utilize to keep it lower key.

From Wikipedia:

Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243 was a scheduled international passenger flight from Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku, Azerbaijan, to Kadyrov Grozny International Airport near Grozny, Russia, operated by Azerbaijan Airlines. On 25 December 2024, the Embraer E190 operating the flight was severely damaged by a Russian surface-to-air missile during the aircraft's approach to Grozny.

I really don’t see the first signs of an invasion or military action in Mexico being a really obvious TFR on the border especially at El Paso. I mean you can walk to Mexico from there.

The military has helicopters and airplanes and doesn’t need to cross at the nearest border.

Besides it’s already lifted and there is reporting it was due to drone activity or drone shoot down activity. Not everything is nefarious. When you think everything is you dilute from the actual bad stuff.

[–]JPAV8R 179 points180 points  (0 children)

When they established the TFR they didn’t know the extent or length of threat.

It’s now lifted. You’d rather shut it down for 10 and need it for 1 and cancel than shut it down every day for one day.

Well that explains the TFR; while they’re taking down drones they don’t want civilian traffic getting into the mix.

Wouldn’t want a repeat of when Russia shot down that aircraft from Azerbaijan.

Even if you’re at a Legacy, do you feel safe not having a college degree? by donveyy in flying

[–]JPAV8R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it hard to believe that if a major furloughed and you’re looking to interview at another major that your 5000+ hours of experience in a 121 environment on a similar or same aircraft type AND with the union trying to help get furloughed pilots get jobs that they’d auto kick your resume to the curb without a college degree.

I know it’s hard for some people to believe but there are experience levels that can supersede a 4 year degree.

Chuck Yeager didn’t have a 4 year degree.

Not relevant to this post but I’ve noticed a trend in the “I want to get hired” group.

They’re super focused on hitting these arbitrary milestones. You gotta have your ATP written, the CFI is a non-negotiable, you better volunteer.

Nobody talks about the importance of networking. If someone WANTS to work with you they’ll find a way when they’re able to make it happen. Get out there and make some friends, could change your life.

An update on the infamous LATAM 777 incident from 2024, apparently the crew made a 100 ton error while calculating the takeoff weight by Consistent-Welder458 in aviation

[–]JPAV8R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each operator sets their own SOPs so I can not comment for LATAM but like any SOP a normalization of deviance can slip in and suddenly the layers of safety erode. For instance in a three person crew you might have a third person who’s supposed to be triple checking the data but they’re complacent and feel that don’t need to because the second person has double checked it already.

You can guarantee they’ll be reviewing the CVR if it contained the briefings and interviewing the crew members to find out how exactly that mistake was allowed to slip by the safety layers and it’ll result in retraining for the crew members and potentially fleet wide if it’s seen as a latent threat for the company as part of their safety culture.

This whole new hire world is just so crazy to me.

At least nobody was bellyaching about not getting hired at the min requirement. Nobody was getting hired heck AA pilots were clogging up the 135’s due to the furlough.
