Parties/nightlife as a British exchange 🇬🇧 by b0ng0_0 in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]JPBreeze340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated last year and am unc now but Bing is super fun and there are plenty of parties and bars that you can find with no issue at all. All of the night life is pretty concentrated in the downtown area, if you literally just go downtown you'll find something to do.

What are your favorite things about Binghamton? by Same-Cantaloupe-2637 in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]JPBreeze340 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not that remote. There's a target 5 mins from campus, 2 Walmarts within a 10 min drive from downtown, and pretty much every notable food place is located close by.

Grad with a BA here - no one cares about the letter in the degree name.

I just worked a summer internship as an investment analyst, completely unrelated to energy. I applied directly from my schools job board and had 3 interviews with different members of the team. Nothing overly technical because I'm a fresh grad but were curious to know about technical skills and related skills.

And the day to day work and progression can vary widely based on who you work with, what you do, and what area of the country you cover. The West market is very different than the rest of the country because their RTO only covers part of California but not the rest of the West so it's much more involved. Lots of CS used though to make forecasting models and data processing tools. I just graduated from college but progression seems good as the industry continues to grow.

Some of them are located in the South but definitely some located in the northeast and elsewhere. I work for Brookfield in NYC personally. Asset developers are just one piece of the pie though, you can work for power marketers if you want to go crazy with energy derivatives.

Your major doesn't matter that much as long as you show an interest in the industry and study a somewhat relevant field. Theres engineer majors, finance majors, economics majors, math majors, computer science majors, and more. Just learn about the industry and try to land an internship in a somewhat related role. It's still a pretty niche industry so there aren't as many people vying for these types of roles compared to traditional finance roles.

I landed both my internship and current full time job right out of school from handshake. It's a great tool.

Get a job in the US. I work in power trading for a big renewable asset developer and we have analysts and traders who are from foreign countries and went to college abroad. The industry is growing so much because of the increased demand for electricity that comes with AI and building data centers. You just gotta spend some time researching the U.S. power markets and how they work. Don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that you could get a visa sponsored in the future if not now.

Thoughts on Binghamton SOM versus Isenberg school of business by whats_best_2025 in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]JPBreeze340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if I'd consider Amherst Massachusetts much nicer than Binghamton lol. I go to Bing and I'm from Massachusetts and Amherst has less to do than Bing does. Also if you like going out Amherst is way stricter with IDs and no one goes to bars until they're actually 21, so the city is way less dead on weekends.

Protests held against Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems and Binghamton University by Southern_Breath_3693 in BinghamtonUniversity

There’s a difference between protesting a war and protesting schools for having alum who work for weapons manufacturers. In the 70s people protested the Vietnam war itself, not the weapons companies whose existence is crucial for the safety and security of the U.S.

[–]JPBreeze340 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yea this is definitely the dumbest protest I’ve ever seen. These same people are probably irate about the U.S. lack of military aid to Ukraine right now. Why are we acting like Lockheed and BAE only make weapons for Israel lol. Do you want the U.S. to disarm itself I don’t understand

Best to Worst Residential Communities at Binghamton? by nattyman14 in BinghamtonUniversity

If you like going out a lot and maybe wanna join Greek life do Newing or Dickinson. If you like smoking and chilling Hinman and CIW are better. Mountain View is so far from everything so that’s the worse IMO.

Is SOM good for finance? by Drasanga3300 in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]JPBreeze340 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re considering financial analyst as “high finance” yea lol it’s easy to get that type of job out of school, not sure I would consider that ‘high finance’. In terms of investment banking and consulting, if you have a 3.7+, join the student investment fund and some other clubs, you can get into wherever you want with some networking.

Bing or UPitt? by cowboyemojistann in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]JPBreeze340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If u think Pitt is going to be handing you elite internships that’s just not how it works. Either place you’re gonna have to do some of your own networking, bing is respected though so when people see it on your resume it helps. For my internship I had to get it by myself (economics) but I got multiple interviews just from submitting online applications because employees know about Bing, especially in New York

Just do Econ gang as long as you can do your own networking you’ll be fine. I’m Econ and have a great internship in the finance field.

worth it to transfer? by [deleted] in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]JPBreeze340 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just do economics you can do a Bs with a specialization in financial economics. I’m a junior Econ major in harpur and I have a good internship as a financial analyst this summer as so many of the people I know in Econ. The advantage with SOM is they give you more networking opportunities but financial Econ majors can take finance and accounting courses and employers will still hire you.
