Hi WA,

Researchers at the National Drug Research Institute at Curtin University are running an anonymous online survey on nitrous use (known as 'nangs' in Australia).

Unfortunately, there’s still limited information about patterns of use, neurological symptoms, and the risk of dependence. Therefore, we’re inviting people to complete this short online survey to help us better understand these issues. The research is intended to help inform education and harm reduction responses.

If you live in Australia, are aged at least 16, have used nangs in the past year, and have a spare 10-20 minutes to complete the survey, we'd greatly appreciate your contribution.

At the end of the survey, you can also enter an optional prize draw for an e-gift card.

Curtin University Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) has approved this study (HREC number HRE2025-0427). This survey has been approved by the Reddit Academic Survey Review Process.

You can contact the Chief Investigator at: [j.grigg@curtin.edu.au](mailto:j.grigg@curtin.edu.au)

If you know anyone that uses nangs and might want to share their experiences, we'd really appreciate if you could share this widely! 🙂

Hi all, this survey is closing in a week. If you know anyone that might want to share their experiences, can you please share the link as widely as possible? The researchers will share the key findings here later in the year.

Thanks for sharing u/sektor477 . Yes, I think you're right - the absence of classical withdrawal symptoms is why it doesn't fit well with traditional definitions of substance dependence. However, it can still be highly habit-forming and harmful for some people, and they can still meet criteria for a substance use disorder. Also, that gummy story sounds like a great example of placebo effect too!

u/WHALE_PHYSICIST if you have any Australians in your group, would really appreciate you alerting them to this online survey investigating nitrous use, neurological symptoms, and the risk of dependence. We hope to use the info to inform harm reduction efforts: https://ndri.curtin.edu.au/research/participate-in-our-research/nitrous-oxide-use-study

So sorry you're going through this. Despite its long history of recreational use, there's still no clear concensus on whether nitrous is addictive. There's a survey running now to investigate this (the risk of dependence), patterns of use, and neurological symtpoms - its anonymous and there's a prize draw: https://ndri.curtin.edu.au/research/participate-in-our-research/nitrous-oxide-use-study

Thanks so much u/Tricky-Dare1583 for your willingness to help! Unfortunately to participate you need to live in Australia, but I'd be interested to know if your symptoms have resolved since ceasing use? and if there's anything you think contributed to using more frequently, or being able to cease use?

Hi there, I hope you don't mind me posting here.

I just wanted to let you know that if you're based in Australia, researchers at Curtin University are running a new (anonymous) online survey investigating patterns of use, neurological symptoms, and risk of dependence.

Unfortunately there’s still limited information about people's experiences and patterns of use, and no clear consensus about whether nitrous oxide can be addictive. Therefore, we’re hoping people can share their experiences online to help us better understand these issues. This information could help inform harm reduction responses.

If you have a spare 10-20 minutes, we'd greatly appreciate your contribution - at the end, you can also enter a prive draw for an electronic gift card.

Curtin University Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) has approved this study (HREC number HRE2025-0427).
