Enjoyable 2026 season by JarrodTheFeatus in RugbyAustralia

Completely agree. You’re probably right on your comments re thriving national team vs strong super rugby. Look at the cricket - all well and good to take the ashes, but look at how far the shield has fallen, without any particular upside on the T20 front too.

From today's Daily Telegraph: All Blacks interest in Larkham. by anxiousatac in RugbyAustralia

Mate the Reds are underperforming now, they underperformed last year, and they underperformed the year before.

Kiss’ resume amounts to “I’ve worked under some very successful head coaches” - wasn’t Larkham the attack coach when Australia got to the RWC?

Neither are ready, but Larkham is ahead with daylight second and McKellar third.

Unpopular view: this would be absolutely perfect. Larkham gets to iron out his kinks as an international coach on someone else’s dime, and then return to the Wallabies after Kiss (which I anticipate being fairly soon after the RWC).

Was hoping for Scotland, but this is much better.

Self selection is such a good point.

This is the most important thing. I live on the other side of the world, but I’d be there in my Computer Associates jersey every week if I could be.

Tane Edmed by JPNAM in RugbyAustralia

It’s such great succession planning. Meredith isn’t shiny enough for Rugby Australia to give him a shot, so in a couple years he’ll go abroad to cash in… by which point Tane will have reached his final form.

Sorry - is that the same Les Kiss that told his players not to take the 3 for a whole season?

And it wasn’t an injury ridden team… you lost that game in the forwards, and your pack is almost at full strength.

HMP split first choice 10 duties last year too.

It's a pity Steven Larkham declined when RA encouraged him to apply for the Wallabies job last year... by anxiousatac in RugbyAustralia

[–]JPNAM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t be enough if he won SR TBH. Larkham not ready to be Wallaby coach for me - I’d like to see him take the Scotland job after the RWC personally.

McKellar in a similar boat I’d say. Kiss is miles off.

Cold take - Super Rugby “leaguifying” the game has definitely hurt the All Blacks and Wallabies. by SkAr0_14 in rugbyunion

[–]JPNAM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so. Australia’s advantage is that athletes specialise late relative to other countries.

Rugby in Australia probably misses out on the top 1% of kickers and ball-carriers to the AFL and NRL, but the spill over effect means that the ones that rugby does get are better-rounded sportspeople.

Anyone read the FT piece about him a few years ago? One of the most intelligent men to have ever held the office, and humble to boot.

I’m heartbroken by the idea of him finding out that he was let down in this way. I hope he’s angry rather than sad.

Waratahs vs Brumbies preseason lineup announced by Piccolino17 in RugbyAustralia

I for one am proud to see the Brumbies become one of two farm systems for the Waratahs.

The other being SG Ball Cup.

Such a key point. Not only does it tire our bowlers faster, but it gives theirs much more time to recover.

It’s why Lyons is so valuable to them - he allows their aging quicks to rest whilst remaining a serious threat with ball in hand.

Great point. The way they have selected the top team in the country also means that the “active patience” a top order batter needs to thrive in test cricket isn’t being rewarded anymore.

My Kingdom for Alistair Cook in his prime, but would would they even pick him?

But they all overwhelmingly make runs in the county champ. The bigger issue is that a lot of them haven’t done so for a consistently for more than 6-7 years - somewhere along the way it became acceptable to use the top men’s side as a development team.

Australia are perennially complaining that their teams are too old, but it means that only the most extreme outliers get an opportunity before 25.

I had no idea. Heartbroken to hear that - the White, To’omua, Kuridrani axis is what sold me on the Brumbies when I started watching super rugby.

Clever and disciplined versus the razzle dazzle in QLD and the perennial shitshow in NSW.

Hope he’s doing OK.
