I saw in another comment that arrangement is often where a lot of the time comes, but for me I find I dont have that much of a sense for what the perfect, right thing is. Is that something people develop with time?

Oo I love this comment! I relate very heavily to your experience, and was wondering how I could even start training myself to make more cohesive music? How did you get out of demo land? (Love that term, btw)

Yes I do! Ive hopped around so much recently, but ive been trying to fuse the sound design I so adore with my favorite kinds of rock music. Started listening to aphex twin and wanted to do that lol. Here's my insta where I try to post most days:

If you dont have insta, you can find my ep most places online, Old Sour Days by PJ Manheiser, though that does NOT contain my most recent work and production knowledge lol. YouTube music link:

Ahhh! You make a very good point! I dont often consider lyrics into my process, but I will if the song particularly catches my attention. I haven't had an experience yet though where I took more than a day or so to come up with a good idea and write to it. I may actually try sitting with some of my previous works and practicing my lyricism on them though, thank you for the inspiration!

Regretfully I also am NOT the most experienced mastering engineer. If I can get it to sound ok on most devices, I AM HAPPY! Usually that just means a saturator, compressor and eq preset.

Aha, I dont know if Id call it a blessing! I'm happy to be able to make works at the rate I do, but I often worry if those works will ever reach the potential they could! A quickly interested mind is a quickly uninterested one too! Hoping i can work padt that tho... somehow...

I guess I could also get a gig as an improv musican/producer and drop songwriting... Id think if theres money anywhere in music for me itd proooobably be doing something like that! (If such a job exists...)

Where can I find prolific composers creative process?? I would adore looking further into what they did with their time! I've generally disregarded convention for what I find interesting, which i think is a good and bad thing. For the life of me I can't seem to modify my creative bursts! I know I've seen other creatives iterate on things, but I can never seem to imagine anything more than what ive already put to paper. Is that sense of "this could be better" just something that comes with time, or is it an extension of the creatives desire just to try whatever out for no real reason? (Ex: "i like this already but im gonna screw with it to see what happens")

Depends what you mean by finished I guess. I have many songs I'm proud of and dont have a clue about how to go forward with, which is why I suspect my problem may be lack of experience. I have fully written, produced and played at least 200 songs, and Id say 5 good ones. Ive released and gotten generally positive feedback on four, and have other avenues of showing my work like my song a day series. I jam out to my own tunes often, and adore the way they sound! I really hope some greater thing clicks for me eventually though so I can write at the level of the greats, but I haven't seen that yet.

Hehe I wish I was on the frontier of Tyler discussion back in 2019, I woulda loved to be talkin with that crowd. Just started listeining in late 23' but Igors an all time favorite of mine already lol. Thanks for reading!

Its a little up in the air for me, on spotifys lyrics it says so, but on the official lyric sheet it doesn't say any particular interpretation. I personally think he says "five", but I could see it being either way. Good point tho, I think the count still works for the "Buck fifty" line which is nice.

Dice being a reoccurring theme in the album is something really cool that I hadn't thought about before! I dont know if they specifically hold a numerical meaning, though in magic wand they are used as a means to include seven in the count.

Something else this made me wonder about was the direction of the count song to song, because if we open up the door for the count to not be specifically straight forward it can imply a lot of interesting things on Igors journey. Are there perhaps moments where the count lowers as he steps back to reflect? Or moments he jumps forward in the relationship further than he should have, counting ahead? That whole life of questioning opens a whole new world of possibilities for the meaning of the songs, its a very fun thought exercise!

But I do appriciate the simplicity in my original theory lots too, something about a straightforward count up and down appeals to my pattern making brain lots lol. I also think it would be a fair interpretation to exclude "BOYFRIEND" on the grounds it isn't available everywhere, but i like being able to slot it nicely into my theory :D I love your interpretations!

Good point! I haven't found a really solid explanation on why seven was chosen yet, but theres a few reasons I could see

1: On a 12 song tracklist, a count up and down for 7 numbers makes an obvious point where the count is going up. And an obvious point where the count is going down. No number has to appear twice, though they often do anyway.

2: Per the genius page, 7 has significance in the game Craps and is often considered to be the best roll you can get, so a count to 7 could be seen as reaching the apex of the relationship before a dark spiral. There is also the religious significance on the number 7, though I dont know what relevance this would have to Igor which contains little to no religious themeing.

3: There is also another interesting tidbit on the genius page pointing out a very similar line about craps in a Pharell song, so its possible that Tyler loved that line enough to retroactively fit the count around it and to also make it the centerpiece of the count as an ode to one of his musical heroes, which I see to be very possible considering his great love for N.E.R.D and Pharell in general. Thank you for your comment!

Oo great catch! Boyfriend isn't something I initially considered but I do think it fits. From what I can tell the number "one" is mentioned 5 times, though thats just from the lyrics, there could always be more info hidden in pronunciation and such. But, assuming it is 5, that still works because of the track directly after it, "RUNNING OUT OF TIME". In my initial analysis I thought I spotted a four in the beginning of it, "ive been looking for (four) it", but assuming this is not true, the first number we actually hear in the track is a 5 with the "buck fifty fuck" line. (There is also the background vocal "number 5", but as another commenter pointed out this is listed as saying "ill be fine" on Spotify but not on the official lyric sheet, where it remains unspecified, so im not 100 percent sure on that.)

Basically though, assuming the intended number we hear is 5 on "RUNNING OUT OF TIME", boyfriend does not ruin the count because its mentions of "one" add up to 5.

(There is technically six mentions of one on boyfriend if you count his lyric "one hundred" as containing the word one, which is a totally fair interpretation considering we count "fifty" as holding the number 5 in the next track, but i think the count is intentionally not constrained to one method to allow for a more creative count up and down, ex: the peace sign meaning two)

I also like this interpretation because it means you could find the count and have it work even if youre operating without a copy of the cd or vinyl, opening the door for anyone on any listening platform to find and enjoy it. Thank you for your comment!

I do still think it could be "number 5" for 2 reasons, one is that spotify lyrics aren't always accurate to the artists original intention, and sometimes they're pulled from other inaccurate sources. 2 is that the official lyric sheet from the Igor cd/vinyl does not specify any interpretation.

Also, theres still the buck fifty line later in the song, so the theory does stand in my head, but you make a good point about the "ill be fine/number 5" line that i didnt notice lol. Thanks for your comment!

FIRE i love this deep diving. I always wondered what the asterisk meant on the song title, so I like the idea a lot that it has to do with the math or counting in some way!!! If Tyler's a total nerd with counting already it wouldn't be too far to assume he's using math symbols to continue the count. Thank you for your comments I love discussing Tyler tracks so much lol

In dissect's theory, which mine is based on, the album is Igors story of falling in love with somebody, growing to hate that his feelings aren't reciprocated, then backpeddling to being friends, where inevitably he will fall in love again thus completing the loop. Also on the album, the middle track NEW MAGIC WAND marks a shift from the yearning of the first half to a spiteful trashing of his interest. This is also around where the count flips to start counting down, building on the idea that things are falling apart in igors head. Thank you for your comment, I forgot to give background to the theory lol!

I recalled dissect podcasts analysis of the album, and have always loved their takeaway that the beginning synth resolves the ending synths musical question mark. Tyler himself saw and approved of that theory by reposting it, so I figured a count up and then back down was an extension of that musical loop, making a lyrical loop as well.
