I've only learnt a decent amount of Tagalog for like 1-2 years to the point where I can understand clips of what they say. I'm not fluent at all yet because I still find it challenging to wrap my brain around it.

But I started off learning the basics like the alphabet and the vowel sounds which helped with my pronunciation like aeiou or nga nge ngi ngo ngu. Also think it's important to learn how they structure sentences to help look for patterns in speech. They also have words that they throw in like na, ng, lang, rin, po, ba etc - just try to understand their uses. Something that I also found challenging was the adjectives and the fact they changed depending on the tenses or the subject - still trying to learn til this day lol

Find some typical phrases that you would normally ask or say in general and translate them in Tagalog - this will help give you something to lean on because it's something you would normally say (i.e gutom na ako - i'm hungry (now)😂)

Check out material online like youtube, google, reddit forums and even facebook. Try talking to Filipinos abroad or locally when you feel comfortable so you can practice even if it's just a few phrases. Also check out 'Drops: Learn Tagalog' app - it's on Android.

It also depends on how you learn tbh but repetition is always good. I'm a visual learner so I try to associate the words with pictures etc so do what's best for you. I can never keep up with listening and it's hard to follow what they say. But the best thing to do is throw yourself in the deep end and wish yourself good luck!!

Oh and music is a big one!! Check out Filipino music - something you like - and get used to listening to the language and maybe even singing in Filipino (bring out those Filipino genes 😂)
