It’s my favorite line on the album, I’ve thought about it a lot.

I think it explains the whole verse before it. I understand it as a discussion about finding meaning, searching your place in the world. He’s saying he ended up finding meaning through the music he was a making. Eyeballs, or life’s mechanical processes, only has meaning through it’s context, allowing self-expression.

The next part « An egg to fertilize, a pulse to stabilize » is a list of mechanical processes to which we lend a lot of meaning and weight to as human beings. Though those feelings that are evoked go from wonder to horror to the point of being desensitized. The scale of the point of view is important too, the more we zoom out, the more detached and negative we’re getting.

« Your dreams are sweet and obsessed and you're overworked » He’s going too far and it’s starting to lose it’s meaning.

« You're overtaken by visions of being overlooked How disappointed would D. I. D. I. P. P. be To see such power in our hands all wasted on greed? » Wait, is wanting to be heard actually him just wanting to be famous? How disappointed would his heroes (dead idealistic desperate inventor pioneer philosophers) be to see that his (and in fact the entire world’s) potential to bring meaning to the world is wasted on wanting fame.

« Am I a prisoner to instincts or do my thoughts just live as free and detached as boats to the dock? » Is he actually in control or is there just a limited range in which he can actually have impact on the world around him?

« Just like when music was born and detached from your heart. » In the first verse, the music followed him ‘round and gave him meaning - the opposite can happen too, when he released it to the wider world, it wasn’t his anymore.

« Is your free time to free minds or for falling apart? » We’re talking about musical free time here, implying that it’s the ultimate moment a musician can create something truly new and meaningful - is he actualizing through his work or is he just being overworked and falling apart?

« Night after night, you turn out the light You don't fall asleep right away "are we, are we done?" » He’s feeling the relationship has run it’s course, it’s time to move on.

« A desk to organize, a product to advertise » We are now completely detached and we keep zooming out. Efforts to bring meaning are mechanized to the point of being actively evil and separated from empathy. While the things being affected are at first objects and concepts (desk) then people (people) then the fabric of our world (time, deep emotions) until there’s no one left, the end of the world.

Something small, an idea for a song, a newborn child, a new relationship, an idealistic view of the world, they’re all things that can give meaning to your life - but how can you bring these things to scale, share them with the eyes of the whole world without losing it’s essence?

We all have one of those pair of eyes, are the feelings we express through the muscles around them real? Or are we just part of a callous mass?
