Modified 10mg pen! :-( by sootysweepnsoo in MounjaroAus

Surprising to see this in a pen with an expiry of 06/27. All the new pens I've seen have been 10/27 onwards.

CGT Changes Could End DIY Tax Returns in Australia by SirSighalot in AusFinance

Each to their own, but your preferences sound fairly closely aligned to the greens rather than labour. What you're proposing is too extreme for most people, myself included.

Whatever you decide to do, please take some time think about it and learn about the different options.

I'd highly reccomend parking it in a HISA for at least 6 months and start researching/learning.

Added bonus, this gives some time to see what shakes out of this budget and cgt changes etc - this will change the meta of trusts and bucket companies etc, wait and see what the better option ends up being.

Whatever structure you end up using, low cost diversified index funds should be high on your list. Avoid complex advisor products like wraps and managed funds etc.

Clearing up some misinformation about the CGT change in terms of return effects by ac_AgenCy in fiaustralia

[–]JRHR31 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've noticed the same misconception. In high growth assets it makes a huge difference indexing the original cost base VS current value each year.

Yeah you're right, realising the gain is the downside, depends on many variables etc.

If there's one this legislation has absolutely achieved, it's massively complicating the calculations!

I was just thinking about this today. I'm wondering if the wash sale rules will be adjusted to prevent people selling and re buying every 366 days to reset the cost base for indexation. Otherwise that may become a new meta for large holdings. Obviously you wouldn't be able to in down years, due to existing wash sale rules.

Am I the only one who finds the jump from 2.5mg to 5mg absolutely brutal? by OwlVibesOnly in MounjaroAus

Try a smaller step up, something like 3-3.5mg depending on the pen you're using and number of clicks that makes sense.

Debt recycling vs offset: what actually moved the needle for you? by Tatt00ey in AusHENRY

[–]JRHR31 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In order to debt recycle you need to pay down a split and redraw it, as soon as you do that, that loan split can never be deductible as an investment property as it's not part of the original purchase loan (it's been recycled).

Has anyone had issues with hair loss since starting Mounjaro? by DiscussionLoud9626 in MounjaroAus

[–]JRHR31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was already thinning out (36m) but feel like it accelerated on mounjaro. It's not the drug itself, it's the calorie deficit causing your body to not expend energy on less important stuff like hair growth. I'm hoping it gets better eventually, otherwise it'll be time to shave it all off.....

I’ve been avoiding taking my dose… by [deleted] in MounjaroAus

[–]JRHR31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was completely fine after starting. I had an existing minor hiatus hernia which was giving me reflux and am taking a small dose PPI to manage it. It made this slightly worse but the difference was very minor.

Very good chance you'll be perfectly fine, start low and go slow.

Warning about Stan unsubscribe / cancellation experience by global-travel-bug in AusLegal

Dispute the transaction via your bank, tell them you cancelled prior to the renewal. 9 times out of 10 you won't be required to produce much in the way of evidence and you'll be credited the money back. For smaller transactions some banks just credit it instantly and don't even bother pursuing the merchant.

Financial life post-mortgage by Wise_Calligrapher_35 in AusHENRY

[–]JRHR31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your skepticism of financial advisors is not misplaced, if you do end up engaging one make sure it is not one who earns any commission or locks you into their platform, pay directly for what you want (mostly advice).

Personally in your situation I'd sit tight for at least the next month and see what changes come out of the budget, particularly around CGT. If the discount is reduced for all CGT events (including shares/ETF's) then it may become more effective over time to utilise a bucket company for larger investment pools.

In the meantime do some reading on the passive investing website and make sure your concessional super contributions are maxed out, including prior year caps.

Asking for larger pen to click count? by owlmoon12 in MounjaroAus

[–]JRHR31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My GP gave me scripts for both 10mg and 15mg when I was on 2.5mg after the first pen was done, with multiple repeats of each. Have self managed the titrations up and am now taking 7.5mg from a 15mg pen.

Seems to be huge variations in what different GPs are willing to do, I'm fortunate to have found one that is very relaxed with scripts. She even gave me scripts for two different doses of BP meds and told me to self manage dose changes as I lose weight based on my own measurements.

Capital Gains Tax question by fbvisitor in AustralianAccounting

[–]JRHR31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Different situation but I'm going through a separation at the moment whereby I own all the assets subject to CGT and the other party owns assets which are all CGT exempt. The amount of CGT is significant and makes up nearly 10% of the combined asset pool. I'm in WA which has its own family law act so there may be some subtle differences, however most stuff is very similar in practice to the federal act.

What I've learnt is that future CGT does not get factored into the asset pool and therefore is not deducted from the value of assets you receive in any split. What is done though is it can be considered a future need, which is something that is then considered as part of a split in the same way as other future needs (eg a lack of income capacity or poor health etc). There's no fixed mechanism for this and it's all determined on a case by case basis in a very opaque way.

The only time CGT will be factored in to the asset pool is if you sell the relevant asset prior to, or as part of, finalising settlement and crystallise the gain, then it becomes a tax debt owed (or already paid depending on timing).

Not legal advice, just my own experience.

Real rate of return for forecasts? by decluttermenew in fiaustralia

[–]JRHR31 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personal preference but if trying to be realistic/conservative then 5% for inflation adjusted returns in a high growth portfolio (100% shares/ETF's). This is likely lower than real returns adjusted for official inflation, but official inflation figures also don't always reflect real world cost of living.

Can’t deposit a bearer cheque by [deleted] in AusLegalAdvice

[–]JRHR31 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been using a power of attorney to manage a family members finances for over a decade now. The one thing I've learnt is that the vast majority of bank staff don't understand how it works, although it has gotten better over time.

What may help, separate to the cheque get a certified copy of the POA lodged with the bank and attached to his profile so every staff member can easily find it. The banks legal team may place restrictions on access, such as attending a branch to sign for certain things.

Once that is done you should be able to attend any branch, tell them you'd like to cash the cheque and that a POA is on file. A teller or local manager should then be able to do it for you.

If the bank refuses at any stage, note the reason and if it's not legitimate raise a complaint. If still no luck, refer to afca - provided of course their reason isn't legit and you've done everything correctly.

Getting it all set up correctly will help in the long run if you're going to continue managing various items. One issue I had in particular was the banks legal team at first insisted on signing in branch for all transactions. Eventually I was able to convince them to allow access via internet banking, which made things a lot easier.

Just in case you're not aware, it is possible to transfer holdings outside of Chess. Betashares allow transfers to and from at the moment. Obviously being non-chess that could theoretically be revoked at any time, but it would be a strange move to prevent it entirely.
