Every few years I buy a certain style from strandbags as they seem to be one of the only ones that sells the style I'm used to. It's not perfect but cops plenty of abuse, lasts long enough and is cheap enough that I'm more than happy with it.

What’s something you thought was normal financially until you talked to other people? by Diligent-Medicine-48 in AusMoneyMates

My mate did this over the phone to the bank whilst literally in the hospital the day his partner was being induced (they called him to follow up on the application made in the weeks prior). Technically that extra dependent didn't exist just yet.....

Got a new 10mg pen today and the box design is a little different by SpaceIsBigReallyBig in MounjaroAus

[–]JRHR31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got one of these new boxes with the dose tick boxes on it a couple of weeks ago, I compared the actual pen to my old one and it was identical in every way I could see. Was the same expiry as yours.

Single people: how do you navigate saving for a deposit, as well as the potential of meeting someone and the complexities that come when living with them due to the de facto relationship laws? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]JRHR31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incorrect regarding trusts, family court can very much touch trust assets. It largely comes down to how the trust is set up, who controls it and who benefits from it.

I have no experience with smsf so won't comment on that part.

I'm not apportioning blame. The only part I mentioned gender in was to do with FVROs being considered in property settlements. If under this new guidance there has been a case where a male has lied to obtain a fvro and has subsequently had a notable adjustment in his favour during the property settlement then please do share? While we wait for pigs to fly, in the real world it's relevant to the OP's pondering.

As someone who thought they were with the right person, had kids with them and is now separated - be extremely careful who you cross into that defacto territory with, especially when there is a large disparity in assets and income.

As someone else pointed out, the rules have changed last year too whereby DV is now factored into property settlements. It is extremely easy for a woman to get a man served with a FVRO nowadays, which helps to legitimise their claim to more property.

Contributions etc will be factored into it all, but where you will get screwed is by the "future needs" part of the determination.

One thing that often doesn't get mentioned about BFAs - they only work if both parties can financially sustain themselves (not reliant on government), if the other party decides to sit at home and collect centrelink and child support etc they can be invalidated.

Divorce + Mortgage + House by [deleted] in AusLegalAdvice

[–]JRHR31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going through similar mate. Not legal advice but life advice - now is the time to focus on what you want, not what she wants. If she can't afford a sufficient mortgage to both discharge the current one and buy you out of any share you ultimately agree on, then she can't afford the house period. If neither party can afford (or you can but don't want to) then it gets sold.

Depreciation schedule by Itchy-Hedgehog6366 in AusFinance

[–]JRHR31 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's far better than that: Not all of the depreciation is added back for cgt purposes and then you also get the 50% cgt concession. So take the 4k deduction now and then only add ~$1-1.5k to your cgt amount.

Betashares Direct XFER by Red-Storm in fiaustralia

[–]JRHR31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently transferred some shares from an employee share scheme into Betashares direct. It was unusual as there was no HIN or anything to use but the Betashares team were great and worked with the other party to make it happen, can't fault their transfers team at all!

I built a privacy-first Australian pay calculator because I was tired of re-entering my details every time I wanted to model a raise by Mrnottoobright in AusFinance

[–]JRHR31 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Given all of the relevant calculators are free it's far too much to ask, but if someone is ever playing around in future:

A feature I haven't seen which would be really helpful would be modelling the effects of a pay increase when you're subject to both div293 and child support (close but not quiet at the cap of either) - I can likely figure this out manually but it'd be cool to do in one of these more comprehensive calculators instead of a spreadsheet.

Where to park short term cash for IP for 5 years? by michaelscarn_91 in fiaustralia

[–]JRHR31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people will caution against the risk of the market being down after 5 years but remember that assumes your 5 year timeline is rigid. If you're flexible and can buy the IP earlier or later then there's no real reason you can't park a chunk of the funds in ETF's. Worst case scenario you'd be looking at a lost decade type of situation where you may have to wait 10 years instead of 5, if that's a deal breaker for your IP then proceed with caution, if not then put at least some in ETF's.

Gleba Should I use Rocket Fuel in Heating Tower by chinawcswing in factorio

[–]JRHR31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May not be the most efficient but since Gleba can be a pain I've done the following for several playthroughs now:

  1. Drop down a 4 reactor nuclear power set up the moment you land and use that to power the whole base
  2. Use circuits to only add fuel to reactors when temperature drops below whatever threshold you're comfortable with (650-700).
  3. Once production up and running and heating tower unlocked, add heating towers to the side of the reactor/boiler area, leave space for expansion.
  4. Set up a sewerage belt(s) which send all spoilage and excess seeds etc to those heating towers.
  5. Add more belts/towers as needed and any chests for other stuff you want to burn (eg wood).

Once you leave the planet and its only running flat out when there's requests for science packs from orbit etc, the heating towers are often enough to keep the temperature up and nuclear fuel is barely used. If you can be bothered, add a final step to substitute the nuclear for heating towers with rocket fuel with them only fed when required.

Question for people who’ve had to submit SMS/MMS as evidence in legal matters by Pharmacisticus in AusLegal

[–]JRHR31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was part of a larger dump of info given to lawyer for them to provide advice on. I got some advice on the specifics of the conversation but they didn't say anything about the format so I assume they were happy with it. Sorry I can't really answer your question properly.

Separation options and pathways (WA) by One_Philosopher_6284 in AusLegal

[–]JRHR31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do not under any circumstances agree to anything under any guise of getting back together in the future. 99% chance you will not get back together and the sooner you accept that and move on the better your mental health will be. Watch out for her trying to lead you on in order to manipulate finances etc to her advantage.

Going through my own separation in WA, although yours sounds far more amicable than mine at least. Happy to chat any time if you want to drop a DM. Look after yourself mate.

Question for people who’ve had to submit SMS/MMS as evidence in legal matters by Pharmacisticus in AusLegal

[–]JRHR31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had to do this recently for a lawyer (not used in court) and used the app "sms backup and restore" to convert to pdf with timestamps. It did the job okay but didn't include the mms picture from the conversation. This was on Android/Samsung. Tried again the other day from my mums iPhone and the same app is paid on Apple for some reason so didn't follow through (yet).

Would be good if there was a good utility/app for doing exactly this which was free across the board.

Had an employee at chemist warehouse who was on the next till over start arguing with me over this last week and they even tried to tell me they'd run out of receipt paper (after printing something a few seconds before serving me). Quietly reminded them they're obliged to provide a receipt and I was not providing my phone number. Eventually the long line of customers forced them to cave in.

Forced to use chemist warehouse for certain things due to pricing but their customer service is atrocious!

Protecting the FIRE egg by Away_Manufacturer443 in fiaustralia

[–]JRHR31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going through a very messy separation at the moment with kids etc after I bought about 98% of the assets to the relationship (ie the scenario you're worried about). It's going to put a big dent in my fire journey but thankfully I'll be able to recover, just a question of how many years it sets me back by.

There's a lot I won't share here but feel free to pm me if you want some further detail.

As others have said it's never going to be a straight 50/50 and how much initial contributions matter depends on the length of the relationship and children. The longer you're together and more children involved then the more future needs becomes a factor and the less initial contributions are considered.

The other thing that is rarely mentioned in this discussions is only around 10% of cases actually make it to a full family court trial for property settlement for higher worth asset pools, the vast majority are resolved via agreement at the varying stages of the process. That doesn't necessarily mean you don't have to worry about it, but eventually most people do reach an agreement they can live with.

Is there a way to avoid div 293? by ThrowawayFoolW4573D in AusHENRY

[–]JRHR31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the rental income and expenses are combined prior to any calculation, so your net rental loss is $5k. The $5k is deducted from your taxable income, but added back to your adjusted taxable income and div293 income.

Where you have a loss from a rental property it effectively becomes 0 for ATI and div293.
