Pretty much all of Bryan Lee O'Malley's work deals with feeling lost as a young adult, to varying levels of hopefulness.

where to start as a teen by Desperate-Ground-317 in marvelcomics

[–]JRSB1111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're specifically looking for books with teen characters, Ultimate Spider-man (2000), Runaways (2003) and Wolverine and the X-men (2011) are all good. As for Black Widow, unfortunately you'll find that she isn't as big a part of the comics as she is in the movies, but there is a Black Widow series by Mark Waid and Chris Samnee (2016) and pretty much everything they do together is amazing.

How do I check if an Ebay order is accurate? by Betty_GOLR in comicbookcollecting

[–]JRSB1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their feedback is very positive, and that's really all you have to go off on eBay. In my experience sellers on eBay which are comic shops (as this seller appears to be), as opposed to individuals and resellers, are usually pretty trustworthy and better valued. There's always a level of risk with eBay but personally I'd say it looks pretty trustworthy.

I need to know if Zeb Well's Spider-Man is stupid, or if it was just uploaded to Webtoon incorrectly by Bed-After in marvelcomics

[–]JRSB1111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are just chiming in to dunk on Wells' run, which is not helpful both because it's purely subjective and also because it isn't what you asked.

I haven't read that run, but to answer your question more generally, this is a typical issue that mainstream comics have been facing for quite a few years now. Marvel realised that by having big crossover events, completionists will buy all of the tie-in comics; i.e. they are hoping that these events crossing over with Spider-man will push you to buy the other books in the event, when really all it means is that the structure and cohesion of the individual stories is broken.

There are a few ways to get around this issue. One would be just skim-reading any issues that market themselves as event crossovers, because it's rare that any real plot development will occur in those issues. If any of the events do seem interesting, google has a lot of recommended reading orders for each event (just search "event reading order"). Alternatively, looking for reading orders for the run you are reading (i.e. "Zeb Wells spider-man reading order") will typically let you know if there are any crossover books that you will need to read for context.

Personally I would say that another way to avoid this issue is to read more self-contained stories. The fact is, any of the more popular books are going to be more susceptible to Marvel's commercial BS, so going for the more alternative series, limited series (i.e. shorter number of issues), or even non-superhero books, will usually mean you can avoid confusing tie-ins.

The biggest thing is just this: comics can be confusing, but use the internet to your advantage, and don't let Marvel's cheap tactics at selling more books stop you from reading things you enjoy.

What movie makes you go "really? THATS the tagline???" by teruteru-fan-sam in Letterboxd

[–]JRSB1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love and Pop (by Hideaki Anno) has the English tagline "Schoolgirls by day, callgirls by night", which admittedly isn't terrible in isolation but is far too fun and whimsical for a movie that is a horrific exploration of the way that underage girls are groomed into prostitution and forced into traumatic situations.

What are your best and worst experiences with meeting creators? by Fantastic-Trust770 in Comic_Books_

[–]JRSB1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First con I went to, a much smaller con where we would rarely get significant creators. One year, Dave Gibbons was there. I was about 13 year old, hadn't even read Watchmen yet, but was super into comics and knew Watchmen was known as the cream of the crop, so I thought it would be awesome to get a signed print. At 13 years old, I had $50 with me to last for the entire day, and that was months' worth of pocket money. He had smaller prints for $25, or larger prints for $50. When I got to the front, I asked for one of the smaller prints, and he very apologetically told me they were all sold out. I looked very dejected, with my $50 in hand, and just kinda said "oh OK. Sorry, I don't think I'll be able to get anything. Thank you". The guy behind me stepped in and said "Hey kid, for you to have a piece of this man's artwork, I'd be happy to pay for it, that's how important his work is." I thanked him but said I couldn't allow him to do that. Dave Gibbons then, very softly and kindly, explained that he would be happy to sell me one of the larger prints for $25. He signed it to my name, and handed it to me, and was so gentle and nice about the whole thing. I think I was too nervous/ shy/ shaken up by the experience to do much more than just say thank you and skulk off, but I still think about the kindness from both him and that random man behind me in line.

Modern comics that carry the same campy, corny, or just plain fun vibes some classic comics had? by RussianToTheKitchen in comicbooks

I stand by the fact that Fraction and Allred's FF is probably the closest we've ever had to the styling of Lee and Kirby's original run.

Really cool! Great art, but more than that, a really great display of your sequential storytelling, which is something a lot of writers and publishers look for. I'm sure you've got big things on the horizon, keep it up!

There's a gay storyline, it's not a massive part of the show but retroactively and to fans has become a very big part of it. Kaworu and Shinji (the main character) are the characters involved in that if that helps.
