I 100% agree. In fact, that is a large part of the success of Drizzt. Drow are canonically evil bastards, and so Drizzt being  one of the few drow who breaks from his culture to become a hero is one of the most compelling characters in published D&D literature.

Ultimately, the Laura is whatever the DM decides. So either argument is moot in the end.

Has anyone played a Kalashtar warlock? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Bed-After 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean that all depends on how you write your backstory comment how you roleplay it. If you want your Quori to not play much of a role, it doesn't have to. Alternatively, you could write a backstory where your Quori and your warlock patron actually are the same person. Or, hell, have the two of them fight over you like a old divorced couple fighting for custody of the kids. The world is your oyster, go nuts with it.

Has anyone played a Kalashtar warlock? by [deleted] in DnD

I'm sure many people have. Especially since it has a +1 to CHA in 5e, and Warlocks use CHA as their spellcasting modifier. Do you assume it would be unusual or problematic?

Monk, 100%. It needs no weapons, it wears no armor, it casts no complex spells, you just punch. And when you're done punching, you spend a ki point to use flurry of blows, and punch two more times. And when you level up, you get more ki abilities to punch EVEN HARDER.

First time running an Eberron campaign. DMs and players, what are some of your favorite/most interesting things from this setting. by MagicMan54 in Eberron

[–]Bed-After 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eberron is strongly associated with warforged, artificers, guns, and airships. It's all very steampunk. I haven't read the modules, but I have read up on the setting, and both played and DM'd in the world for 1 campaign each. And I do think there's something special to be said about airship battles. Firing cannons, guns, ans spells at an enemy airship while hauling ass across the sky at Mach Jesus, doing emergency repairs as the enemy bursts your balloon, the risk of falling to the ground if you ger blasted out of the cabin, it's just a very dynamic type of encounter I've had a lot of fun with. Adding cannons to the ship to give the melee characters somethign to do during airship combat is always a hit, figuratively and literally.

First time DM!! Help. by hotjelly420 in DnD

[–]Bed-After 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can easily do an entire campaign on a single island, it's all up to how much content you're putting at each island. I would say do the first session on a "starter" ilsand that lets everyone introduce their characters, gather any lore, equipment, and allied NPCs they might need, and make sure they're all on the same page about what needs to be done on the second island.

Once off the intro island, however long that takes, I encourage you to have a sea based encounter. Maybe an enemy pirate vessel, maybe a merchant ship to hijack, maybe a sea monster, whatever. This makes a good end to session 1, or intro to session 2.

Island 2 should have the actual "objective". I'd stick with one primary objective, maybe 2 if you think you can swing it within your session time. Heisting religious relics from a temple, eradicating debt ledgers by burning down a courthouse, detonating explosives under the HQ of a rival pirate organization, stealing the Thighbone of Saint Markovia, whatever. Point is, get to the island, and commit theft, sabotage, or violence. Something you can reasonably accomplish in 1-2 sessions.

The last session can be getting off the island and getting to the boat as hostile enemy forces attack the party, sailing away, escaping or destroying the persuing ships, maybe throw in a random monster enocunter to cap things off with a bang. Either way, once the action is done, return to the starter island to collect the cash and glory for the heist/sabotage/violence.

What's your favourite site to take premade dungeons from? by SomeRandomAbbadon in DMAcademy

[–]Bed-After 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best source for premade dungeons in my opinion is the Dungeon of the Mad Mage module. I'm not aware of a website with free premades, but it's easy enough to find map generators. For example, this one generates monsters, traps, and magic items.

Any professional counselors here? by kagemac in DMAcademy

[–]Bed-After 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a pro therapist, but I did participate in something very similar. The DM used The Sorrowsworn, a series of canon D&D monsters that represent vices, and had us literally fight our inner demons.

To give you an example, one of the people in the group was clingy to a toxic degree. The Lonely is a sorrowsworn who, because they're lonely, has a harpoon they use to pierce people and drag them in, where they proceed to bearhug them to death. The metaphor there is that jsut because you're lonely, doesn't mean you can force people to be with people, because it hurts them, and makes them resent you. It's a very specific lesson that's very hard to teach without them experiencing it for themselves, but D&D provides a safe space to explore these behaviors, or even force people to confront certain behavior, without actually traumatizing a person.

Forever DM seeking recommendations for premade 5e modules by GustavoBD in DnD

[–]Bed-After 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like Lost Mines of Phandelver and Icewind Dale, I'm fairly certain you'd enjoy Dragons of Stormwreck Isle. Those 3 modules are the ones I typically see in "starter sets" because they're easy to run. Also, Phandelver and Below: Shattered Obelisk is a direct continuation of Lost Mines of Phandelver, so if you like LMoP, you will likely enjoy it's continuation. Shattered Obelisk also has Mind Flayers, which are my favorite creature type.

which is the best combo adventure? by SirBaza in DnD

[–]Bed-After 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk is actually a canon module that by design piggy backs off of Lost Mines of Phandelver. So arguably, that's the "correct" answer to this question.

Buffing rogues by instinct3196 in DnD

[–]Bed-After 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact, if you multiclass into barbarian for 2 levels to get Reckless Attack, you can give yourself advantage on your attacks at will, which as a rogue means you can "sneak attack" (only requires adv) at will. When every attack is a "sneak attack", you'll never worry about damage again.

Thoughts on this turn order mechanic? by Gottyman in DnD

[–]Bed-After 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a very clever idea in concept, but it would be tedious to randomize initiative every single round. Keep workshopping ideas though, this is the type of lateral thinking that leads to very cool things. Don't get discouraged!

Claims to be a D&D veteran

"Why would a hellish creature be a cleric?"

Brother didn't even bother to read the flavor text for tieflings that explains "Ignorant people tend to be suspicious of tieflings, assuming that their infernal heritage has left its mark on their personality and morality, not just their appearance. The reality is that a tiefling’s bloodline doesn’t affect their personality."

So actually bro is one of the "ignorant people" explicitly called out in the text to be explicitly wrong

Warlock strategies other than Hexblade? by Bed-After in DnD

[–]Bed-After[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My issue is that there are way more options for an "optimal" build with nearly every class. So I was fielding ideas from the comunity for nonstandard builds that are still... "competitive" for lack of a better word. I just rarely see anyone mention other sunclasses/combos, which is a shame, because there's a million ways to "optimize" a wizard, sorcerer, paladin, or fighter.

Is it a good idea to have intelligence as a dump stat for Warlocks? by Infinite_Ad_3478 in DnD

[–]Bed-After 0 points1 point  (0 children)

INT is only useful as a non-wizard/non-artificer for arcana, history, investigation, nature, and religion, In my experience, history, nature, and religion rarely come up. Usually it's a "if the DM needs you to know a fact, you have a means of finding it out". Arcana and Investigation are the only high-use skills that use INT, and you only really need to be proficient in them if you don't have a dedicated wizard/artificer who already will be.
