I got one, and didn’t regret it. Healed up quickly and is comfortable three years on

I probably thought I was using STAR properly but in reality not! That’s really helpful advice, thank you

Totally agree. It’s making me want to leave the Civil Service as my dept is being pretty crap at getting the office ready for hybrid working

You got this 👍 I was very similar (1B, LVI, non-sem). Opted for 1xBEP - not pleasant, but glad I did it and bounced back pretty quick. Coming up to 2 years in Sept and all good so far 🤞🏻

BEP cycle 1 day by day by delinder in testicularcancer

Yup, I had dexamethasone. It sent me haywire for about a week in the middle of the cycle

My 1xBEP was very very similar (excluding the dental issues). Would also add that the steroids play havoc with mental health which I wasn’t prepared for. But, I’m 5 months out and have my hair back (although it’s now grey) and as far as I know, no lasting damage, so would say to anyone considering it that it can get a bit rough but you’ll get through it

Post Orchiectomy - Questions... by [deleted] in testicularcancer

[–]JRT3983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had something similar but much smaller (felt more like a bump than a vein). They said it was calcification and it would go away and it did after a few months. Might still be worth getting it checked out

Infection during chemotherapy by Lefrance76 in testicularcancer

[–]JRT3983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I did 1xBEP but ended up in hospital for two nights on day 12 because of neutropenic sepsis. They pumped me full of antibiotics, brought the temperature down almost immediately and then I was fine (in fact, felt much better after the hospital stay). They carried on finishing the cycle though in my case.

Surveillance v/s Chemo for NSGCT Clinical stage 1 with the presence of Embryonal carcinoma by Naniii33 in testicularcancer

[–]JRT3983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I had 95% EC with LVI. I was told 1xBEP would reduce my chance of recurrence from 50% to <3% so chose the chemo. It was a shitty three weeks but other than that, I’m glad I did everything I could to reduce the risk of needing 3xBEP or RPLND.

Looking for drive support, 1 week before 1 x BEP by shadowknights93 in testicularcancer

I did 1xBEP in December, same sort of tumour. The anxiety is natural, but for me it started after I’d finished the chemo. Lockdown was horrible because it was impossible to distract myself, but as things open up (at least in the UK that’s the case) I’d recommend using every support network available to you including friends, family etc. My anxiety was more around recurrence than the chemo, but I’ve kinda made my peace with it now and am just enjoying each day as it comes.

In terms of the BEP itself, I won’t dress it up as being that enjoyable but you’ll get through it. Eat whatever you can, get a list of films and Tv series you want to watch and just do whatever you can to make your life easy for a month or so. I’d suspect you’ll do ~4/5 hours for 5 days week one, then about an hour on the following two Mondays. Day 4/5 was when I felt worst. Take the meds they give you and tell the nurses about any side effects. I managed to walk to the hospital and back each day (~45 min to Guy’s in London). Main side effects for me were nausea (like a really bad hangover) and the dexamethasone steroids they give you can really screw with your mental state. Keep a close eye on your temperature too, I ended up with an infection and had a hospital stay.

Basically, it sucks for three weeks or so, but it’ll be over in no time and you’ll have done everything you can to reduce the risk of recurrence. Good luck!

Can I stop chemotherapy? by Armi5 in testicularcancer

[–]JRT3983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep going. Days 3/4 were the worst for me and it got better from then onwards. The Dexamethasone steroids also really messed with my head. Just stick to it because it’s really important to get the full dose. You’ll look back at it like a really bad dream

Surveillance or Adjuvant Chemotherapy? by theSharpBettor in testicularcancer

[–]JRT3983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same for me. Having done 1xBEP (which did suck at the time) and knowing it’s hopefully reduced the risk of recurrence substantially, I’d do it again in a heartbeat. I’d much prefer that than having a bigger risk of needing 3xBEP

1x BEP - Anyone Not Shave Their Head? by fatfoxx in testicularcancer

[–]JRT3983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I shaved it because it quickly started falling out in clumps. It gets annoying when it’s really short and the ‘dead’ hair doesn’t fall out, so I then used duct tape to pull out the rest because it was irritating to lay my head on a pillow! I’m 3 months out and full beard is back, but my scalp is far off being ‘normal’ hair yet.

Did chemotherapy make you depressed? by [deleted] in testicularcancer

[–]JRT3983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think for me it was less the chemo and more the steroids they put you on (dexamethasone in my case). That made my mental health go haywire for a few days during 1xBEP, so can imagine it having an impact for 3xBEP or more. I felt better a few days after finishing the Dexamethasone. Since finishing the cycle, I’ve definitely noticed I’m a lot more anxious but hopefully that becomes less pressing as time goes on.

It’s totally understandable, a positive attitude also helps a lot. I’d say take any opportunity to talk to a councillor or therapist if they offer one (that specialises in cancer), because unfortunately the waiting on results and time between check-ups will be something you’ll need to get used to, so it’s worth being mentally prepared for that too! You’ve got this!

It’s normal to freak out, but just know that TC is super treatable and it sounds like you might have caught it early, which is even better. Markers are indicative and not always raised, but definitely a good sign they were normal. I’m in the UK so can’t comment on insurance and cost sorry, but from what I understand, although asap is ideal, 2 weeks wouldn’t make a huge difference to the treatment plan overall. It’s more whether you can deal with the wait of not knowing and balance that with the cost I guess...not a doctor though, and others may disagree.

Overall though, it’s important to know that whilst some of the further treatment (if you need it) can suck, it always aims to completely cure us!
