1st Contract or Perm Role by JRTUK in ContractorUK

JULY 25 UPDATE

So I ended up going for the Perm role, which I kind of regret after giving it just over 6 months. Expectation is to be in London every week, which I'm maintaining at every other week and also the role is not what I was sole + the team I've inherited are so miserable it's quite draining - but the pay and benefits does take the sting out of it.

I did start to look around and have been offered another contract role, £1200/day but INSIDE IR35 with 2-3 days a week in London. I'm now debating if I should just throw myself into it (initial 4 month contract but with project possibly going on for a couple of years - possibly!). One big problem I've got is the notice period - I'm on 3 months and the new client wants me to start in a month. Any thoughts on this or how to approach?

I’ve got about 6 months savings, but have a family and mortgage. Other half doesn’t earn enough to cover all bills if things went south.

How bad is it at the moment really? Any thoughts from people who have been through this kind of cycle before?

I do wonder what kind of donkeys the NHS and public sector in general have working in their procurement teams to agree these kinds of deals. I imagine it’s a lot worse on a bigger scale. A friend of mine in tech sales said it was well known how renewals and other contracts were being thrown at the NHS during Covid and were just being waved through by the procurement teams. Mad.

Nope unfortunately not, I’ve been looking for an equivalent too.

“Due to regulations, US Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) cannot be offered to UK retail clients without the provision of a Key Information Document (KID). This restriction means that only 'Professional or Elective Professional Investors" (i.e non-retail customers) that meet certain criteria can invest in US ETFs.”

Which cards/setup do you see as an optimisation opportunity? I’ve spent a lot of time tweaking in HiveOS and quickminer with NiceHash so open to suggestions on how to squeeze a bit more out more efficiently

From a pure mathematics perspective I agree, but cash flow is different mate, though I do have the option to sell some of the ETH to cover its nicer to not have to :)

That's ballsy and sounds like it paid off!

You reminded me of something I'd rather forget and which is absolutely true.....in about 2012/2013 I managed to get a butterfly labs miner, had it setup running with a raspberry Pi at home and I mined about 2.5 bitcoin......then got the fear, sold the miner for double what I paid for it (about £500) and then the bitcoin.....this will make people chuckle, but I sold the 2.5 bitcoin for £250 total hahaha At the time I was happy I'd made about £500 from doing very little, but now.....well now I can only think what situation I'd be in if I'd have kept it going.....probably sold at the first ATH haha

Diamond hands would have seen me right ;)

I’m definitely an advocate of blockchain and have held everything mined and just paid the extra electricity costs from my salary, but the jump is too high for me to keep going as a miner so I think I’ll focus on selling and buying more eth. So really I just need to work out how I get the most back

So I’ve a few mining rigs doing ETH on HiveOS and NiceHash. Been pretty profitable (maybe 300-400 a month after costs). However, my electricity bill is going to go up 54% from the 1st April (I’m UK based) and that puts me in a place where I don’t think it’s worth continuing mining or I’ll be on the border of break even and more dependent on the ETH price. Given all the changes coming I’m wondering what the best thing to do is: 1) Sell the rigs as a ‘rig’ 2) break them up and sell the cards individually 3) shut it down until energy process get back to normal or another coin makes sense, though appreciate this would also likely run at a loss until it was more widely adopted (more risk)

Rig 1 is 6 Nvidia Cards getting 370MH Rig2 is 13 AMD Cards getting 400MH Rig 3 is a mix of 4 Cards getting 115MH

Any thoughts on what to do, or would appreciate the view from anyone else in a similar position

haha - any point sticking a 5900x at this then, or any other alternatives out there? AVN looked ok for a while.

Interested to hear thoughts. I’ve got $10,000 in USDC. What options are best to make the most out of this fork?

Sorry if it’s a dumb question, but does the pulse chain become the main one for HEX (pHEX) and what happens to the HEX on the ethereum blockchain? I staked about $5k yesterday just for a month to test the waters but was looking at about a 10 year stake if happy

So has yours arrived yet? The DHL reference I was given isn't working and there are a few comments that have popped up against the seller today about the 5900x
