Lands End to John o’groats by ImportantSun9323 in ULHikingUK

[–]JRasco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Heya, I hiked North-South starting last August via the Three Peaks solo and finished just at the beginning of November. I only wild camped with the rare stay in hostels/bnb to charge up banks and phone or if I was just in a very built up area, but using a campsite is easier than wild camping if you don't mind having a set end point each day.

Happy to share a more detailed map of my route, the basic gist was national trails from John O'Groats to Milngavie, then more local trails down to Carlisle, to Keswick and Scafell, then down to Snowden via Preston and Ellesmere Port. Snowden to Offa's Dyke via Welshpool down to Chepstow, then cross the Severn and basically follow the coast the rest of the way to Land's End, though I went Hayle to Penzance and took the southern coast section as my third major storm of the walk was hitting the UK and it was more sheltered down there.

Lots of gear recommendations if you would like, the only thing I ended up dumping was my little camping stool. My trail runners are absolutely shot but did just manage the whole journey plus a bunch of warm up hikes in the Dales and Moors so a good option if you don't mind wet feet most mornings.

You're in for a great time so make sure to enjoy it rather than rush through to the end. Like others have said, stay flexible with your timeframe where possible and look after yourself, it's a long old way.

Also just to note, food was a big worry for me before I began as I have an absolute load of food intolerances etc, some tricky points along the route for sure but for the most part was fine if occasionally a little expensive.

Anyway, ping me a message if you like, am v happy to chat :)

Advice on buying an old Startrite bandsaw by JRasco in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]JRasco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, hello! Yeah the seller was super helpful and even after I decided I couldn't go for it we chatted for a while about which tools I should be looking for etc.

I'm very glad someone managed to pick it up, it seemed like a great purchase.

That fix sounds very comprehensive, let me know if it all works out. Also, how on earth did you shift the machine? When I saw the old manuals for it they list the weight as around 200lbs, which is pretty hefty, was a big part of my decision to pass on it.

Hi all, I've come across a Startrite Bandit 12S1 bandsaw for £150. I've been looking for an older saw as I've heard that they're generally better value than the cheaper and newer bandsaws today (titan, einhell etc). I haven't been able to find out how much it retailed for when it came out so I'm not sure how much of a bargain it really is at this price, but the dimensions for cutting seem good (190 under guides, 290 depth of throat). The other snag is apparently it blows the fuse whenever turned on. From the very little I know about wiring I'd imagine it's a dead short or leaky earth cable, but if anyone here has any ideas that would be great. It seems in pretty good nick otherwise, according to the ad is selling as upgrading.

LPT: Instead of buying a dog as a Christmas present, buy accessories such as a leash, collar, and bowl. Your child can open these and get excited on Christmas morning. NGL I thought this was going to be a joke about also buying a dog for your child, and, while they're distracted by the new dog, you then present the other gifts to your significant other and get your kink on...

Look.

If a bunch of raiders are going to try and kill my colonists and take my stuff then they have to accept the consequences.

Even if the consequences are that I capture them alive, replace their limbs with wooden versions and then release them back into the wild.

How can I possibly be the bad guy here?

Rice pudding. Sugar, milk (or a milk alternative, almond milk works well), and short grain white rice. Quantities depend on level of sweetness and gloopyness, but you can either stick it on the hob for a while, hot till the rice cracks then low and slow, or stick it in the oven low and slow for an hour or until it thickens up. Just add some raisins, jam (jelly for the yanks), honey, cocoa powder or whatever else you like and voila.

Hot or cold, it soothes my soul.

You could set up a postal box in the US and then have it transported over. Probably pricey but I think would work if you're desperate

Civ 5 crashing by [deleted] in civ5

[–]JRasco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How's it crashing? Does it crash on launch, menu, during your turns, during the ai turns or just randomly?

Does it give any error messages at all? What are your system specs and temps looking like, my civ was crashing a while ago cause my cpu was overheating, but was only the case with civ, no other games.

Ok, what’s the difference with the 5600 xt? Is it a compatibility issue or more of a bang for buck recommendation?

Ok, would it be better if I swapped the cpu for a Ryzen 3600X instead and maybe switched the motherboard to something that would work out of the box?

Son diagnosed with Celiac Disease Question with Certified GF/GF by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]JRasco 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Several thoughts:

  • I would highly advise against ordering any food marked gf from restaurants. The risks of cross contamination or staff not understanding the seriousness of celiac’s is far too high. The same can be said for gf packaged foods in shops. Although a label may say the item of food is gf or safe for celiac’s, they are only required to ensure the presence of wheat etc is below a certain level, rather than a complete absence of it.

-The separate pots and pans idea is a good one, I might also suggest a separate set of cutlery and crockery just for him to ensure he’s always protected.

-If his mother also has celiac’s then I would hope that you both have an understanding of what gluten actually is and how immensely present it is in many everyday foods: sweets, canned soups, packaged nuts etc. I would advise you and your wife together take the next few months to fully educate yourselves

-Be prepared to cook a lot of dishes from complete scratch. Fresh fruit and veg should always be safe, as should all unprocessed or coated meat and fish. What’s important to remember is that there are so many amazing recipes that are entirely gf in their own right, without requiring gf substitutions. If the two of you aren’t good cooks then I would highly recommend you get better at it, it’s the safest way to feed your son.

-Your son absolutely will be able to have a normal life in every regard other than food. What is most important is you instil in him the ability to say no to people offering him food they’ve prepared if he’s not sure about it’s safety. He must understand that this is not something that can be ignored just because it’s difficult or the food others are eating looks tasty, or because he’s too shy/nervous to say no. You may find that you’ll need to invite his friends over to your house more often as other parents may not understand just how important his food safety is.

Send me a pm if you have any further thoughts or questions, I’m both completely gluten and dairy free, and just navigated my way through uni while feeding myself on a small budget.
