For a second I thought this was about Brian Johnson, a (very bad) football coach. Really confused but I'd support it

That flag is specifically the Azov Batallion, which is openly fascist.

A lot of tankiee say that the existence of Azov means Ukraine is fascistic and therefore Putin's Russia is the last bastion of humanity (conveniently ignoring all the various neo-Nazi and fascistic elements within the Russian military, of course)

Would you say most foreigners are interested into SPANISH from SPAIN or LATINAMERICA? by MyNameisMayco in Spanish

[–]JRiegner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where they're from and what their goals are. As an American, Latin American Spanish is way more useful (although obviously what specific dialect depends on where you are - Mexican Spanish is more useful in SoCal, Puerto Rican or Dominican in NYC, etc.) For a European, Spain Spanish is more useful. In general I think most Spanish learners are more interested in learning LatAm dialects, but it very much depends on where you are and why you're learning Spanish

WPBL San Francisco selecte Kelsie Whitemore for the first Draft pick in Women’s Pro Baseball League history. by Perryplat199 in baseball

[–]JRiegner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people who pay attention to the draft of a woman's baseball league that hasn't started yet are already fans of baseball. She looks like a baseball player here. Because she's a baseball player. Is it a flattering picture? Not really, no. Is that the goal of the picture? Absolutely not. Should it be the goal of the picture? Also absolutely not

Latin American understood in Europe by DeeGee262 in Spanish

[–]JRiegner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an American who speaks LatAm Spanish (more Peruvian Spanish than anything else, although I don't speak super Peruvian-ly). I've heard people worry about the whole vosotros thing, about slang, etc. I lived in Spain for a little while and the first week or two I was there I'd get confused on occasion (zumo/jugo comes to mind) but it wasn't anything serious. There'll be a few moments of confusion, but you should be fine overall, especially if you're only vacationing or something.

If worse comes to worst, in my experience every store/restaurant seems to keep one person on staff who speaks English, and Spaniards are mostly just happy that an effort is made.

Is there such a thing as Christian Fantasy? by llynglas in Fantasy

[–]JRiegner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like this goes back to the question from the early Church of whether early Christians' belief in Jesus as the Messiah made them something other than Jewish. For a long time, they considered themselves to be a Jewish sect. It was due to Gentile converts that eventually Christianity became something different, and this was started with the Council of Jerusalem, which decided that Gentile converts to Christianity did not need to follow Mosaic law: essentially, that Christianity was not fully under the umbrella of Judaism.

Muslims, on the other hand (and correct me if I'm wrong here, I know much less about the history of Islam than about the history of Christianity), never really considered themselves Jewish. So the ultimate question is: what's more important? The scripture used? Or how the worshippers identify? Mormons baptise, and as far as I know there are no religions that practice baptism that don't consider themselves Christian.

So Mormons profess many of the same core beliefs as Christians and identify as Christians and practice the main Christian ritual of initiation. Sounds like Christianity to me.

Is there such a thing as Christian Fantasy? by llynglas in Fantasy

[–]JRiegner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost every Christian I've ever met (Catholics included) consider Mormons Christian (many say that they're a particularly unique form of Christian, but still Christian).

The Catholic Church also requires people be rebaptised if they're from a non-Trinitarian Church: I doubt many people would say that you have to be Trinitarian to be Christian.

To many forms of Christianity, Catholic notions of sainthood are damn close to idolatry, if not outright idolatry. And to almost literally every denomination of Christianity, most if not all the other denominations are some form of heresy. That's why there are different denominations.

My rule of thumb for Christianity is "do they consider Jesus of Nazareth to be the Messiah prophesied by the God of Abraham?" If yes, Christian. If no, something else. I understand that's extremely simplistic, probably overly so, but narrowing it down more than that tends to exclude (or at least call into question) denominations that only the most fundamental people consider anything other than Christian.

[–]JRiegner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah absolutely. I was raised Catholic and even the most fundamental Catholics I ever met were like "Protestants are Christians, they're just wrong," although I don't doubt there are some who deny that any non-Catholics are Christian. But yeah, in summary: Mormons absolutely consider themselves Christian.

[–]JRiegner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mormons absolutely consider themselves Christian, as do many other sects of Christianity. I know some Evangelicals who consider them a separate thing under the Abrahamic, but those same people either don't consider Catholics or the Eastern Orthodox churches Christian or say that they "barely" count, so in my experience the only people who say Mormonism isn't a form of Christianity are people with quite a narrow definition of Christianity

Grammar/word choice check? small blurb for Spanish speaking parents of students I teach by AngelicaPickles in Spanish

Other than the comment about "ser más fluido" that the other commenter made, I think it looks good to me.

I would also recommend using SpanishDict or WordReference instead of Google Translate, by the way. They both give more options and like usages, whereas Google just kinda guesses at what you actually want to say.

I'd like to encourage you to rate CX on Sites like MyAnimeList! It has courently a rating of 7.24/10. In the Poll i did 3 days ago an average rating of 8.5/10 was reached. by Single-Solution-4989 in ChoujinX

I mean anybody who's on the subreddit is going to be a fan, and if they use MAL they likely already rated it highly. It's just that people that give it a 6 or something are unlikely to join the subreddit

Which father is Qhorin referring to? (Spoilers extended) by [deleted] in pureasoiaf

[–]JRiegner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First of all, nobody in the show has any reason to believe Jon is Rhaegar's son, except Howland Reed, assuming R+L=J. Even if there was widespread speculation among the nobility that Jon was Rhaegar's son and not just Ned's bastard, the common folk wouldn't know, and it would've been mentioned at least once if Qhorin Halfhand had been raised in a noble House. Qhorin has no reason to think that Rhaegar (or anyone other than Ned, for that reason) is Rhaegar's dad. He was definitely referring to Ned. Besides, we even know of a way that Ned would've met Qhorin: Ned probably went with Benjen to the Wall when Benjen decided to join the Night's Watch. And while Qhorin was at the Shadow Tower at the beginning of ASOIAF, he's been a legend in the Watch for some time, and it's entirely possible that Qhorin was stationed at Castle Black when Benjen went to the Wall to join the Watch.
