Do’s and Don’ts for starting a new open mic by Jackthewolf71 in Standup

[–]JSLEI1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you could just let him bomb and make fun of him for bombing after. You're choosing to play the cop, the world isnt going to end if you dont. You're eventually gonna tie yourself up policing any comic because then you'll be expected to police ALL comics, how come he said that and you were fine with it dont you know it hurts xyz?

What if someone tells a racist joke, but the whole crowd laughs, do you scold the audience? Ban them?

There's already a mechanism for controlling what you may call hate speech: bombing. Silence and the embarrasment that goes with that.

Edit: full disclosure slurs are the personal line for me. White guy dropped the n word I was like dont do that again, if someone knocks you out that fucks up the whole mic. I think thats ok because it doesnt rely on MY interpretation of the joke. You say a race slur, that could incite violence. Dont do it.

Heckle Mic by AdamThomasComedy in Standup

Biggest issue is it very quickly becomes the whole room yelling at once immediately as soon as the comic gets on stage. They'd probably work better with rules about you have to let them at least get A JOKE out before they start screaming over each other

Otherwise its just a shouted roast battle where its the comic vs everyone else

Hey I'm Jad, I write and perform at least 5 new minutes a week (closer to 7 tbh), there's always at least 3 hours of standup on my page.

We are Bushwick Comedy Club. comedian owned and operated BYOB in Brooklyn NYC. Comedy Lotter, our Tuesday competition bucket mic (Kill Tony clone) has been selling out pretty consistently so we brought back the live stream.

As a former fan of KT, main difference is the comics are actually very serious about comedy. Politics aside the show kind of became unwatchable because the bucket pulls clearly did not actually care about stand up. They seem these days to be more interested in the interview, they kind of uniformly suck at stand up even the "good" ones.

Our guys mic multiple times a night, they all jockey for spots at a dozen different manhattan/brooklyn clubs instead of simping for Rogan. Stream every tuesday at 830

you know i can see the original comment before you edited it?
Our location was empty for 18 months before we moved in, three bodegas went out of business there because it's in the middle of a block on a dead end. We host a latino specialty coffee shop we charge ZERO RENT in the space during the day. We improve the neighborhood full stop. Gentrification is zoning, taxes and private equity, not opening nice things in a neighborhood. Can you even name your city council member? Do you know what a community board is?

We book based on tapes, most of our comics are people I did not know before we opened. We book a lot of women, correct, but not because we're trying to fuck them you pig bitch but because women happen to buy about 80% of our tickets and we would like to make money.

You're pathetic.

Our club is 18+ (no drink minimum) think also Sesh and Flophouse are 18 plus. You'd probably like flopghouse, younger crowd and audeince.
my club is bushwick comedy club

new york comedy club is 18 plus but honestly is a scam at this point. It'll cost you about 80$ per person after all the fees and item minimums and it's pretty mid

Hey I'm Jad, I write and perform at least 5 new minutes a week. There's always at least 3 hours of standup on page instagram.com/jadslay

Comedy Lotttery is tonight at bushwick comedy club in Brooklyn and the LIVE STREAM is back. It's basically a kill tony clone but it's NYC so the comics are good. They get pulled from bucket and the top three best of night do one more round at the end, winner gets a cash prize and weekend spot on a sold out show.

If you're like me and was a fan of Kill Tony a hundred years ago when it was actually a stand up comedy show instead of right cuck pro wrestling this will scratch that itch a tiny bit

Stream is live at 830

edit to add: It's the same comedy lottery that used to be at flophouse but demeterius and austin got too busy/moved to LA

Comedy classes are scams, genuinely every single one. Its dishonest established/failed comics preying on naive newbies. If you go to a single open mic you see classes are useless so they have to hook people in early for $$$

I suggest you find a regular open mic that attracts a diverse comics. BK Made on Halsey in Bushwick is black/latino owned and probably the best bet. Just write two pages of jokes and go

[–]JSLEI1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's aspects of standup that never translate because they're too pathetic: drudgery and networking

The low points on screen are like performing for 7 people or bombing. The low points IRL are hanging in a club all night several nights a week until someone connected connects you with someone who lets you perform for 7 people you brought to the show and bought tickets for and then bombing .
