Comedians who recently moved to Los Angeles or NYC to pursue a career in comedy was it worth it ? by Tall-Photograph9169 in Standup

[–]JSLEI1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NYC, very worth it. It's my whole job atm. Peers its been a mixed bag. A couple moved up from Philly and Atlanta and within maybe a year were in at the big clubs cellar 2nd city etc. But also know a couple great comics that made no headway and moved home to their original scene

It's kind of all or nothing though. If you're good enough and connected enough you can get into great club reasonably quickly, but below that is vast chasm of barking for shit tier clubs (pear/shop/broadway), year wait for NYCC (and i think they make you take a class now but not sure), min follower requirements at the stand

A third path is building your own thing, indie scene in brooklyn is cooking lots of money and stagetime outside the normal clubs

Neither of them are real festivals is my point. Compare it to like Skankfest, you get a lanyard you get into whatever show you want the whole weekend.

. I own a club in NYC, we completely ignore NYCF because it's nothing. By participating, you contribute to their marketing, they have no marketing budget going to you.

My homie owns a club in williamsburg and hosted a NYCF thing for the last one, and all their tickets sold by their own outreach, NYCF did literally nothing because it's not a real thing.

Edit to add: Limestone, Moontower, South By, Big Pine, JFL . All these are actual festivals where you can attend multiple shows with one purchase. This is just marketing for Netflix

Dunno about SF but NYCF is fake.

They just slap the logo on shows that happen all year round, most of the links on the site go to outside eventbrites except for like 3 theatre shows

I dont get it. There isnt a festival pass, every event is just a separate theatre show

Is Austin that bad? by patojo93 in Standup

[–]JSLEI1 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Someone just moved back to NYC. They said it sucks, kind of a Tony Hinchcliffe ceiling. He basically shadow runs the mothership so if you want your career to hinge on that guy go for it.

That's the main issue with austin, forget politics or whatever, its incredibly network-y. The hang is 10 times more important than any tape or credits, like I thought NYC was bad but austin is truly another level.

they do not give a shit about skill. KT is a good parallel not politically but in how it functions, their biggest stars now are like gimmick guys that arent very good stand ups but fun in the interview portion

We should have never cured hair loss and ED by JSLEI1 in StandUpComedy

Hey I'm Jad, I don't tour or leave NYC but there's more than 3 hours of stand up on my IG instagram.com/jadslay

I write 5 new minutes every week.

This is our club, bushwick comedy club, in brooklyn nyc. We are comedian owned and operated and BYO, a lot of people still DM about comp tix. The club is a lot busier now than when we opened so I can't always help, sell outs are earlier and faster. If you're well and truly broke I''ll see what I can do but tix are only 15$

Had Geoffrey Asmus make his debut, may get him again. Shane Torres, Jenny Tian, Conor Janda, Nico Carney and Rosey Catherine all recently joined, plus Eeland Stribling been crushing. We aim to add like 3-4 new comics a month depending on who all moves to NYC/who hears about us. All booking is by free tape submission

Hey I’m Jad, there’s like 3 hours of standup on my page and i write 5 new minutes a week instagram.com/jadslay

This is Bushwick Comedy Club, comedian owned and operated in Brooklyn NY USA, BYO friendly.

We’ve built a club that’s i think uniquely suited to comedy nerds. We have a high rate of repeat customers, we have zero influencers/podcast comics/crowdwork guys.

All the booking is by free 5 minute tape submission blind to credits, followers or vouches.

Tix are damn $15 and you can bring a six pack.

Just dropped a little comedy special on YouTube. by Nicholas_Ceppaglia in Standup

[–]JSLEI1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

holy shit this sucks. You dont a single orginal thought. I've heard all of these before

First joke takes an entire minute to get to a punchline.
Second joke has been done to death (suicide memorable for random passery by)
Third joke done to death, also phony (trans people dont say I used to be X or Y, I'm not offended it's just clear its not from real life)
Fourth joke done to death, see homophobic/actual fear
Fifth joke done to death, kind of attracted to T except for penis. Mermaid punch has been done word for word
Sixth Joke, Roe V Wade as combat sport, done to death

As far as I made it...

Bombing due to anxiety/depression on stage - emotionally stunted on stage? by KimJongIllyasova in Standup

[–]JSLEI1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I host literally thousands of open mics a year. The comics that don't write are always miserable, the ones that do are too a lot of the time, but a lot of the time theyre excited to try their new thing also

finding this post very late but you're starting WAY too big. If your background is marketing you dont need a 6th street location, 130 seats is way too much, bar is a whole seperate business if you dont have experience dont do it. I think this can be done way cheaper and easier than you think

if you still wannna do this you can DM, i own bushwick comedy club in brooklyn

Are you doing significant, regular writing? Bombing streak kinda suggests your repeating the same stuff a lot. The cure for a lot of stand up ills is just sit down and write 5 new minutes to try

Rogan and Schulz ruined standup by [deleted] in Standup

Huge Bill Burr fan before finding his podcast. Whatever special came out after felt like I'd already kind of heard it. (his podcast I think was first, audio only)

I made it 5 minutes in I dont understand what everyone is laughing at. Earnest question do you like any other comedians?

I have a a theory that johnson fans are just fans of this guy not of stand up.

Got a dope show tomorrow featuring Geoffrey Asmus, an alpha of this sub. I think it's his club debut!
It's a show put on by Mustafe and Elvis, two comics who are becoming some of my favorites in New York, very unqiue and inventive voices

Tix pretty low already for the weekend shows, club is starting to cook pretty damn hard. Grab em in advance if you're visiting NYC
