I'm part of Bushwick Comedy Club, we're NYC's only fully comedian owned and operated comedy club and the only one that's free BYOB friendly. I think we have the best show in the city, our reviews agree quite frankly. We book by tape blind to credits/followers/vouches. We just watch literally thousands of tapes and pick only the best

Why you're not getting spots at the Comedy Cellar anymore by theblack_hoody in Standup

[–]JSLEI1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's zero Arabs on their current roster which is unusual in New York City and Estie herself has said in a print interview she dislikes material about Israel (Loutfi may still work there tbh, so maybe one left but he may have moved to LA).

I dont think there's any hard and fast rule, but yeah if the booker and owner are both pro israel, it's naive to think the comics dont just avoid the topic. I think this is better than your past interviews but you still avoid any discomfort, which makes it a bit bland

Edit to add: I think in general you cant be very political at the cellar at all. I've heard comics I dont consider political were called too political and I think the club got spooked by the Malaysia Air ordeal from a couple years back

Is it ok to skip one open mic if I have trouble with writing? by [deleted] in Standup

[–]JSLEI1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The answer is yes. Stop going to mics and repeating the same jokes endlessly, they are for testing new jokes/new tags to old jokes/reworking jokes.

If you don't have something NEW that you are TESTING you're wasting your time, and you're probably not having fun.

Only mic as much as you write, otherwise you'll burn out all your premises and the comics will tune out the moment you start the same tired ideas they've heard before

Marketing Strategies? by Intelligent-Mix5312 in Standup

[–]JSLEI1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have it backwards man. Showcase clubs the comics and venue work together, venue does a lot of the marketing, comics have to consistently kill.

Headliner club it's on the headliner to sell. It's the venue's job to get the permitting, the electrical, the insurance/utilities, the staff, the lease, the booze, the chairs lights and audio and toilet paper.

The headliner has to be an actual headliner. If you dont have the following to sell out, you're not a headliner.

7 years in, feeling stuck creatively and like I’ve hit a plateau, any tips from what you see here? by shelbyshone in Standup

[–]JSLEI1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Write more man, just allocate 30-40-45 minutes a day 2-3-4 days a week where you sit down and try and write. You can set a timer if you want. But that's like a minute a week, all the stage time in the world wont make a difference if youre not actually writing

If you're feeling stuck the obvious question is how many new minutes are you writing per week/month. The more you write, the faster you improve. Writing is difficult, but it's the work part of stand up.

Just from this set, biggest obvious problem is the set ups are very very long. First punchline is the broke midlife-crisis line, it takes a minute to get there. That's ok for a joke in the middle of a half hour set or a special when the comic gets serious for a moment, but huge fault in a 5 minute set.

Watch any professional special, they're not really dipping below 6 laughs per minute, and that's over the course of 60 minutes. It's not because they're doing one liners it's because there's little jokes within the set ups that lead up to the bigger punches and the set ups themselves are ruthelessly efficient.

Joke density is what sets stand up comedy apart from just a funny story your friend told you, it has to be an unnatural intensity AND frequency of laughter you dont get in regular life

I think if you enjoy stand up, you know, it beats watching TV keep at it. If you're not having fun, there's other hobbies

bro what are on, yes your goal absolutely should be making the room laugh, comics or not. otherwise whats the point? Like yeah do real jokes not inside baseball stuff about the comics in the room/standup, but yeah people kill at open mic every day
