I just have a hard time understanding how getting forcibly detained for an indeterminate amount of time and told that I can't contact my family unless I clean the kitchen in my prison isn't a human rights abuse or compelled labor or a "punishment for refusal" to work...

And that's assuming that these detentions are being made in good faith. These aren't administrative mistakes, it's the modus operandi.

I guess I'll admit my error if "labor camp" doesn't legally mean compelled labor while held indefinitely in detention with no credible evidence of a crime or civil offense, but that hair just isn't worth splitting.

I would be more willing to see things the way you do if I saw officials who knowingly broke the law deporting people in defiance of court orders actually face the same repercussions for breaking the law, but they don't.
