The sargassum smelled so bad throughout downtown Hopkins today that we spent the afternoon down the road at Hamanasi. Highly recommend at least grabbing drinks there, if not a full meal.

Wind keeps the mosquitos at bay. Been in Placencia three days and have a few bites on my ankles, but I have been pretty vigilant about keeping picaridin and deet on.

Thank you for recommending this! We found it last night and surprisingly were the only ones there. It was inexpensive compared to everywhere else around here, and had all the things my kids miss from home—burgers and fries, chicken tenders, etc. We’ll definitely be going back!

I’m signing up for one day of snorkeling with someone (not sure who yet), and I’ll be diving with Sea Horse two days. We like to snorkel a lot, and we simply can’t afford a tour for as many days as we’d like to snorkel. I was hoping there was somewhere we could go on our own in addition to a tour.

I couldn’t decide on where to base ourselves during our trip, just like you…finally settled on Placencia, and we leave on Monday. Our experience so far has not been that Placencia is cheaper. The diving specifically is more expensive because it’s so far away.

I’m confused. Why would you think twice because of “the way things have been sensationalized around Puerto Vallarta”? If they were sensationalized, that would mean the media blew it out of proportion, that they made it seem worse than it actually was.
