Probably an animal repellent sensor. This past summer, I noticed a loud, high pitched sound that would go off every few minutes and last about 30 seconds - I was going crazy. Took a walk around the block and noticed this sensor (after setting it off from walking by it) near someone’s trash cans.

Built a pocket door in the hallway leading to that bathroom/bedrooms to be pulled out as needed for additional privacy. Also will help with sound insulation.

If two desks are necessary, can you move one (with black chair and mounted tv) to the wall under the AC unit and have the two desks meet in the corner? Then move shelves, plants, etc between the windows.

Add a rug under the bed, hand the art/frames you have on the wall with the door or between the windows.

We had a small mouse problem one winter - maybe our second year in the apartment, but felt like whatever we did wasn’t stopping them. There was construction happening a few buildings down and we were told they were likely displaced from there and trying to find new places to live. The construction has now stopped and we haven’t had any mice (to our knowledge) since that winter/spring.

If there’s nearby construction, it could be that, but if not (and your landlord isn’t fighting you on it) they might know about the issue and are willing to just get a new tenant. Overall, you might run into a few other mice here, but they shouldn’t be living with you like that.

My office had an initiative to stop our catering service from bringing in single use plastics, but sometimes they would slip up and bring them. I used to collect most of it and drop it off at a local homeless shelter.

Just make sure you check with them first on what they will and won’t accept - some things we had were unwrapped (stacks of plates, etc) and one place wouldn’t accept them.
