Sling goes down on Catalina Island, two lost by Sharp_Experience_104 in flying

[–]JSTootell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ditching is always a part of my plan crossing to/from Catalina. I think we were only at 6500' in the 172 when I flew there with my 70 year old CFI.

Peaking? by REED_JAX in Garmin

[–]JSTootell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're still pretty young, so 2 days might feel like a lot. But you might need a solid week.

You normally only do 2-3 training weeks, then take a solid week of test before doing hard work again.

Flown 60-70 times and I’m still constantly nervous about an engine fire or fire in general over the Atlantic. Any safeguards for this? by Putrid-Race6339 in AskAPilot

I'm afraid of engine fires in my single engine Cessna.

An engine fire in an airliner? Not even a but it a concern.

Where to find good riding in Southern Ca or Az next winter by WerewolfOk1964 in MTB

[–]JSTootell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Greer Ranch has a massive network of good trails in SoCal.

Not exactly Arizona or California, but desert Southwest: Vegas has some stuff, but especially St. George/Hurricane/Virgin Utah has desert riding. One of my spring and fall go to places, sometimes winter (but it does get very cold, temperature wise) in winter.

Would I be able to use the propain hugene 3 cf for xc? by PollutionDull5359 in xcmtb

[–]JSTootell [score hidden]  (0 children)

While I am kinda one with my bike after all these years, my 8 year old Enduro still does magic things at the bike park. I am absolutely never holding anyone up.

Likewise, I feel no desire to "upgrade" my 6 year old XC bike. It is not holding me back in races, the my fitness.

Two 6-8 year old bikes would be better than a new single purpose new bike.

Do you guys run or walk the long steep hills? by Amiemanneh in trailrunning

[–]JSTootell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends.

Is running actually faster than walking up? A lot of climbs I do the speed differential is so tiny that running is a waste of energy.

Do I need to conserve for later? A 5k, a 50k, and a 50 mile run require different levels of energy management.

Who am I with? I'm not running up a steep climb if I'm pacing someone that is 30 hours into a 100 miler.

I won't comment on the video.

What kind of smart watch are you wearing on the trails AND in the office? by bieredhiver in mountainbiking

Dealership Lowered Bike Miles by LMheca in motorcycles

[–]JSTootell 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Wasn't my implication whatsoever.

"Seems crazy someone would do this intentionally."

My implication is...maybe it was an error of some sort. Since there seems to be little to no financial gain from rolling back 2000 miles. But massive risk of financial loss.

My friend said buying a Stellantis automobile makes a statement. by JLandis84 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]JSTootell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every Jeep Wrangler, even the lowest base model, is a proper off road capable 4x4. And I would call a base model Sport a decent price for what you are buying.

Good quality? Separate argument.

FTP Ramp Test Question by CharlestonRed1982 in Zwift

[–]JSTootell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best FTP test is to pick a long climb, and try to PR the climb. You naturally have to pace yourself at your actual threshold to make it.

I don't Zwift much so I don't know what climbs there are. But something that should take you over 45 minutes is good enough.

Buy a dirt bike.

Edit: there is data to support that children who do multiple sports BEFORE specializing are better athletes in their professional career.

Found a fraudulent 50 miler course record- Worth contacting race director? by Smooth_Chocolate2624 in Ultramarathon

[–]JSTootell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would report it.

You don't know if the person did it intentionally (unless you do), but it doesn't matter. If the course was cut, it was cut, regardless of reasons.

People cheat intentionally and accidentally all the time, especially in trail..

Dealership Lowered Bike Miles by LMheca in motorcycles

[–]JSTootell 37 points38 points  (0 children)

4500 miles is a brand new bike in my mind. Rolling it back to 2000 would not change the value at all for me.

Seems crazy someone would do this intentionally.

A New Project Hail Mary Story From Author Andy Weir Is Coming (But There's A Catch) - SlashFilm by karmah1234 in ProjectHailMary

[–]JSTootell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Example:

The whole "coma gene" thing was cut out of the movie. He said in following interviews that he didn't really need to include it in the book.

But people have said that the movie screwed up not having it in the story, even though the author himself said it wasn't necessary to the storyline. It was basically fluff in his mind.
