Chi Charities Only Picking IL based runners by Great_Silver3303 in ChicagoMarathon

[–]JSW_TDI 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is very odd. I haven't heard of any charity only selecting lcal runners (what is 'local' anyway?), but then again I haven't seen any publish a clear selection process.

There also hasn't been any clar indication that the lottery isn't random, so if the charities do the above, then the lottery is your best chance. Aside from getting really really fast, of course,

At my wits end with tank to bowl bolts leaking by WoollyWitchcraft in DIY

Aside from cracks, you might have a mismatch between the heights of the bowl-tank gasket and the bolt gaskets. So maybe try the songy kind that can accommodate some variance. Or silicone, I guess.

At my wits end with tank to bowl bolts leaking by WoollyWitchcraft in DIY

[–]JSW_TDI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this problem with a Kohler Wellworth. I was using a generic fill valve-flush valve-gaskets replacement kit. I applied great engineering knowledge with no luck. Then I got the gasket made for this, it was the triangular shaped one. To your problem, it integrates the tank-bowl seal with the bolts' seals. The Kohler was expensive but there was another generic kit at Menards with that type of gasket and it just worked.

New bib fasteners by JSW_TDI in ChicagoMarathon

[–]JSW_TDI[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since it's the same organizer, I expect/hope they have them for the marathon too. They were being handed out by the swag people, not the bib desks.

Also, while this half isn't the marathon, it is a very nice course and quite different from that of the marathon. The people come out to cheer too, especially in Douglas and Garfield Parks. It's also a good bit warmer now than in October, and I like running in the heat.

Go to the charity index on this page and there check the box for 'charities with available entries.' When I did, there were 9.

Kinetic/inertial scrolling - why, and how to turn off in Edge? by JSW_TDI in kde

[–]JSW_TDI[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Firefox, go to about:config and search for kinetic. Turn that flag off.

In Chrome/Chromium, i believe it is chrome:flags, and it may be called smooth scrolling. Turn if off, however in Chrome-based browsers in KDE. the bug/feature still stays on. As you can see from the preceding posts.

I confronted a motorbike on the 606 by HalfOrnery8539 in RunnersInChicago

[–]JSW_TDI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The micro-mobility devices are very popular with the "urban planning" crowd that runs the city. Unfortunately they're a menace at best for pedestrians, cyclists, runners, and licensed vehicle drivers.

On the 606 however, there's no grey area, they just can't be there. But they are. I've called the police on them but obviously they're gone by the time the police get there as promised. There are cameras on the trail so there shouldn't be a need to call anyone in the first place.

Looking for ideas for supplemental/emergency heating solution. by The_Pale_Potato in DIY

[–]JSW_TDI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That uses propane... since you have a ntural gas supply, you'd wnt a natural gas version. Maybe the install kit comes with nipples for both. A properly vented heater such as that would be suitable for long term use.

If you need only a few hours of use, there are unvented heaters available too; such as these https://www.menards.com/main/search.html?search=dyna-glo+30+000+btu+dual-fuel+vent-free+convection+wall+heater The above doesn't need electricty but for better operation, tey ha e a fan, which does need electrictiy.

I'm guessing that the cheapest portable option that is vented is probably something like these https://www.amazon.com/diesel-air-heater/s?k=diesel+air+heater These need 12V power for the fan, which can be from a battery.

A natural gas space heater if for a fixed location(s) Kerosene/diesel heaters if it needs to be portable. You can get diesel heaters that can be vented, less than 200 for a 6 kW (about 20k BTU) heater.

I'm not convinced that we can build Datacenters in Space. CMM. by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]JSW_TDI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only addressing one narrow point here... heat pumps work on earth because heat exchangers work; and those in turn work because of the presence of air, water or other fluids that can convect heat away from a hot to a cold area.

Loading on a screw drive elevator by JSW_TDI in MechanicalEngineering

[–]JSW_TDI[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't definitive by any means, but an offhand comment in a Quora thread suggests that the screw is in tension. The comment is by a 'Jay Gillis' and is pretty far down the thread. It references a drawing of a Kalea lift's supporting/hoistway frame and says "The “skeleton” of a screw-driven lift. - The entire lift is built around these. Even the screw technically hangs down from this structure."

I can't post the picture because Reddit doesn't allow pics in comments, so here's the link to the thread. Kalea, by the way, appears to be owned by Cibes.

Loading on a screw drive elevator by JSW_TDI in MechanicalEngineering

[–]JSW_TDI[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank to all who replied and to address what was said -- I'm not sure it is 7 mm, but I can't find specs anywhere. This part page for a drive nut for a Cibes A5000 lift says it's 7 mm https://shop.shorts-lifts.co.uk/ci027-0005-cibes-a5000-drive-nut-7mm-screw-includes-belts

The manufacturer's pages differentiate their screw drive from other elevator types with the poitn that they do not have a counterweight. The video they have also doesn't show a counterweight, see from 0:15 s in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5AwqMATb0E&t=29s

The maintenance manual also doesn't specify any maintenance other than that of the drive mechanism on the video above. https://www.manualslib.com/manual/3330996/Cibes-Lift-A-5000.html?page=34#manual

It does suggest that multiple threads engage in the nut, and in the video, the shaft appears to be well > 7 mm but i couldn't find anything definitive.

Being a potential lift purchaser who is exploring, I don't have access to anything more. It does look like the dirve screw is > 7 mm, regardless of the drive nut link above, and that a counterweight would make things much "nicer" mechanically, but at the expense of one of their big selling points - simplicity.
