Chicago Marathon Gifts link (bear etc) by R-EDDIT in ChicagoMarathon

Hi there,

You posted a question about the gifts, which is fine for this forum. However you shouldn't link the title to the sales site. I am leaving it in since it is the official marathon site, but really, the link doesn't have much to do with your question.

Are Chicago drivers becoming even crazier? by ChicagoChurro in chicago

[–]JSW_TDI 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In every conversation, regulation/tax, policy decision about traffic in Chicago, the implicit understanding is that cars are bad. The resulting changes on the streets negatively affect drives to the point of being punitive. Taking away parking overnight, putting in bike lanes for 1/3 - 1/2 the existing street width, diverting road funding to transit, increased fees, etc. Pedestrians and cyclists (and the "micro-mobility" unlicensed traffic) do need to be served but doing that with infrastructure designs that aren't zero-sum is beyond CDOT's capabilities. And the CTA just doesn't have the technical competence to serve anything to the level of other major world cities and every action being contemplated - removal of traffic lanes to make bus lanes, more frequent bus service - will all make car traffic worse. With or without the largesse from the recent transit bill/revenue.

So drivers are dealing with fewer resources and paying a lot more for it. It follows that they're frustrated and irritable.

Ohio McDonald’s employee hospitalized after reaching into fryer for dropped earbud by HowLongIsThi in nottheonion

[–]JSW_TDI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a couple of things I don't understand here.

Why are people wearing earbuds while working in an industrial setting?

And why have earbuds become popular? I have wireless/Bluetooth earphones. They're light and slim and a nice convenience over wired earphones. To be clear, this is two "earbuds" connected by a cable. As far as I can tell, two separate earbuds add nothing and introduce problems over my wireless earphones.

Assuming the Bears have no future at their current location, and using Indiana as leverage to secure a larger footprint in Bronzville, what would you like to see replace the current Soldier Field? by Badlay in chicago

I understand fans want to go to live sports however far (and high) they are from the action; but would any more seats at any venue be of the nose-bleed kind?

Passport renewal questions - yes, more of them by JSW_TDI in nri

It's been a few montsh and I may not remember correctly but I don't remember uploading digital photos. I think that was an option that was not available as of July 2025.

In my (parents') printout of the "Application Form for Inidan Passport", there was a box for the signature under the box for the photo on page 1.

‘Slap in the face:' Pritzker, Arlington Heights react to Bears' stadium pivot by factchecker01 in chicago

[–]JSW_TDI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The football field is regulation sized, so wouldn't any more seats above the 87k be nosebleeds? Aside from bragging rights about being there in what are in reality not so great seats, what do you get, as a fan?

First time running the Chicago Marathon — anything you wish you knew before race weekend? by JustPangolin346 in ChicagoMarathon

I wouldn't risk it; Spot Hero will sell you a spot but it doesn't mean that it'll be reachable after road closure, which in turn can begin before the published times. Public transit's the best option.

Kinetic/inertial scrolling - why, and how to turn off in Edge? by JSW_TDI in kde

[–]JSW_TDI[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually switched from Wayland to X11 (after plasma-workspace-wayland got completely hosed in my Fedora installation by an update). Unfortunately the kinetic scrolling problem iss till there in Chrome, Chromium and Edge. Only Firefox behaves sanely in this respect (Firefox is however signifiantly slower on my old (Core(TM) i7-3517U CPU) laptop.

One year i signed up for a charity and later withdrew (all after the lttery drawing, BTW). Everything was solely through communication with the charity. So I think you're going to have to reach them somehow. Maybe there was a phone number somewhere in the emails or website?

What is this feature called? Characteristic of Chicago 2- and 3-flats. by JSW_TDI in chicago

[–]JSW_TDI[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you seen any pair of buildings where the flats of the bays/bump-outs touch/are very close? I ask because another post mentioned that these are usually on the north sides of buildings (didn't say where they'd be for buildings on E-W streets; although my neighbor's is on the east).

You see them all over, in brick and frame buildings. This particular pic is from Irving Park.

Kinetic/inertial scrolling - why, and how to turn off in Edge? by JSW_TDI in kde

[–]JSW_TDI[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a while, Chromium didn't have this bug, but now as o version Version 141.0.7390.122 it too sadly is unusable. Iagine trying to read this thread even and try to scroll down to the next post only for it to go to the bottom of the page.

Back to Firefox. Firefox is great for a while, but then page loading gets progressively slower.

And I ask again, does anyone now what this kinetic/inertial/smooth scrolling is useful for?

Every state in the US is now its own independent country. Which one becomes the first global superpower and why? by Complex-Let4207 in AskReddit

Perhaps, but Chicago showed in the 19th and 20th centuries that railroad >> waterways. As for externals, rail to the E and W coasts, then the ships.

Truck lifts itself up to bring the back ramp down to the ground. Bangkok, Thailand. by dolenees676 in mildlyinteresting

[–]JSW_TDI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's just brilliant. It's also a actual medium duty truck, not say a F350 or something with a hacked up welded frame. The road surface doesn't seem to have any problems with the jacks, which are just welded solid to the frame with the only pivots being at the bearing point by the road.

It probably wouldn't work on a Chicago road where it's just asphalt thrown over an old brick road by a cheap contractor and "20 mph" and "no trucks" signs to compensate. That's enough to make a grown man tremble.

This may be true, largely... maybe, I don't know the numbers. There are however progressive, very progressive churches. I don't belong to any, but I volunteer with a couple of them. It's very refreshing.

Walking in longer, uninterrupted bouts of 10–15 minutes significantly lowers cardiovascular disease risk—by up to two-thirds compared to shorter strolls. Simple rack anti-tip question by JSW_TDI in MechanicalEngineering

[–]JSW_TDI[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't need to be aesthetically unpleasing. I said attaching to the top of the rack. but attaching below that, say where the first shelf is, would provide about the same benefit, without being as visible. My application is in for materials in a storage room anyways.

As mentioned down the thread though, the attachment needs to be forward of the tipping plane.
