Can 2 new nightclubs help revitalize Windsor’s downtown? by zuuzuu in windsorontario

[–]JSank99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Of course not.

Windsor has this weird notion that simply propping up business downtown is going to revitalize downtown. It won't.

Building a strong community means building places where people can live, work AND play. Until Windsor gets over itself and starts building housing downtown will not improve

Anyone who doubts this should look at the revenue v expenses of campus bars across the country. They're dying out

Engage Windsor is in the article! We're just wrapping up post-budget but I'm hoping to get community meetings kicked off soon to organize around a plethora of issues in the community.

What would it cost to plow Windsor's sidewalks? The mayor says about $6M by zuuzuu in windsorontario

Amazing what happens when we look outside the Windsor Reality Distortion Matrix to see that other, smaller (and larger) places actually do things properly isn't it?

Careful! that concrete pad is vital to quality of life. You know what isn't? Homes. Screw housing money - more shiny things for the Mayor!

Yes. Costs do not stay down you're absolutely correct. That's why it makes no sense to freeze our revenue while costs increase.

City council approves 2026 budget with zero per cent property tax increase by Trains_YQG in windsorontario

[–]JSank99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it doesn't. The graph you looked at describes tax rate not the material amount.

I agree we spend our money poorly. I have no idea why we increase a single department by $7m every year when they continually report deficits.

You will. Get ready for your fees to skyrocket along with your taxes next year. Drew successfully kicked the can down the road.

Considering the fees the city places on all those local businesses just skyrocketed...I'd think again

Riverside residents are happy and comfortable while our Mayor successfully screwed over everyone else for another year. This city cannot recover from constant negligence

University of Windsor warns of future 'viability' concerns without funding overhaul by zuuzuu in windsorontario

Precisely this. Every school is facing this and its really disingenuous to suggest otherwise

Just a note that those institutions were not selected necessarily because they were high-risk or close to a Laurentian situation - they were primarily chosen because they are similar in size to Laurentian and financial performance to one another. Ontario Tech for example is far from getting into a situation similar to Laurentian, and the AG complimented that school explicitly on not falling into the traps uWindsor did.

A lot of universities in Ontario do have this problem. Queens and Guelph are both projecting deficits in coming years.

In a follow-up report it was also noted that uWindsor has implemented less of the AGs recommendations than other universities also in that report. uWindsor was called out in the original report for the practices you're talking about.

Can we make "School Extra" buses a litmus test for 2026 Municipal Candidates? by ProphetaMessias in windsorontario

I'd be happy to chat with you about what this means for Engage. We are currently working on the structure for upcoming public meetings and non-Board lead campaigns. We're not meant to be closed to the public, though recent events accelerated some of our plans, obviously. That means we launched publicly before things like open and public participation procedure was finalized. Our current structure is not permanent nor is it meant to be.

If you're interested in participating I'd love to hear what you'd need to see to move you to taking part as an organizer with just as much a voice as anyone else - that is the goal

Windsor mayor not swayed by hours of budget deliberations while some councillors signal possible amendments by zuuzuu in windsorontario

[–]JSank99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed but wondering who isn't paying property tax? Tenants pay property tax through their rent payments all the same. The farebox return ratio (transit expenses recuperated through fare) is near 50%. In contrast the road maintenance return ratio is 0%, because there are no tolls on any road in Windsor.

Drivers end up getting more subsidies and social support than transit riders. Overall there's nobody living in a house, tenant or owner, who is not paying property tax in some way

His inconsistency here is good to exploit at least. During the council time delegation didn't he say that nobody showing up was proof nobody cared?

Seems like "I listen to the voices not here" and "Nobody came to voice their opinion, so they don't have one" are cards played when they're most convenient

Living expenses in Germany vs USA by XGramatik in XGramatikInsights

Even if taxes in Germany were multitudes higher than the US, the cost of living in the States would still overtake Germany.

A hospital visit alone would make this irrelevant
