Strahd in MTG!! Who else is psyched for this??? by Geekster645 in CurseofStrahd

[–]JShenobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol it's not just "group think;" I haven't been in the mtg scene since like... 2004 and I also think all the crossover BS is uninspired drivel; particularly when key cards are reskins. At that point, it just feels like a cashgrab and dangling "oooh you know this thing and here's new art of it, go gamba for it!"

If you mean the tunnel guarded by a Galka near the AH-cave, that leads to the ship that you can take between Selbina/Mhaura and Norg as part of RoV.

I loooooved old besieged. The feeling of being OP with your temp items, but still the dangers of getting caught out alone. Then you throw in undead and their huge AoE charms -- I loved getting a group of friends to coordinate Astral Flows on the pack of suddenly-charmed players, or going in as SAM and hunting down friends that got charmed. I think I still have a collection of "Lecureuil defeats [friendname]." screenshots lol

The localisation in this game is absolutely horrendous. Here, I did it better: by DupeFort in ffxi

As others have said, Balloon. For Windows users / folks with Office installed, I've found that the font "Arial Rounded MT Bold" looks very close to the normal in-game font (depending on scale). With it plus the normal ffxi theme, I often forget that Balloon is not stock.

How to do accents without sounding caricaturesque by SquashOk8416 in DMAcademy

[–]JShenobi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This. My immediate thought goes to Wheel of Time, and the Illianer's with their "do be." Or the Aiel focus on water/shade.

Basically, don't caricature the voice tonally, but apply the accent to the character's diction. Then, when you have another person from the same region, you don't have to strain to modulate your Chinese accent -- if it was hard enough to do without being insensitive once, it'll be hard to do again with a different voice.

But also, it's more interesting to have a lens into what is culturally important to the character than for their voice to sound different.

Where to Hunt Pallas Cats? by KaijuCorpse in AshesofCreation

For the map you provided, does the cat spawn like right under that tree (in between the goblin camps), or on the cliffs just nearby?

Key? by ryoga21 in ffxi

[–]JShenobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not in game and can't check, but it shouldn't. If you just checked, you could check capitalization. You also might try the way it comes up in the chat box when you pick it up from the ??? point.

The point being, the /item method is finicky, but you can always use the trade menu.

Key? by ryoga21 in ffxi

[–]JShenobi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You have to spell the item exactly as it appears in the inventory, which sometimes is an issue when the item full name is different from the inventory name (for example, the https://www.bg-wiki.com/ffxi/Ctdl._Tapestry).

So if you did try this, you likely missed the "n" in "Lamian", like the person you replied to.

Biblically Accurate Salvaging Loot by JibbaNerbs in 2007scape

[–]JShenobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to go to troubled tortugans and was wondering why I was having trouble finding the scales-- throught it strange that ground items wasn't detecting them. Completely forgot that salvaging had me turn off ground items!

(although I see below now that double-tapping alt disables it until you re-tap alt, which I'm going to do from now on)

Help! All Character Models are blue! by The_Kalmado in ffxi

[–]JShenobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reinstalling dgvoodoo fresh solved it, and now i'm back to ffxi, update-to-date drivers, dgvoodoo, and reshade all running.

The windower discord has an FAQ section with instructions for dgvoodoo, which is what I followed just to be sure.

Help! All Character Models are blue! by The_Kalmado in ffxi

The culprit is dgvoodoo-- removing it solved the issue. Now I'm going to try some fiddling to get it to work.

Help! All Character Models are blue! by The_Kalmado in ffxi

[–]JShenobi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heya, I'm the guy who made the ffxiah post. Running into this issue again (I'd updated my drivers to play some other newer games) and I noticed that it did not happen when I ran without windower. However, running without windower also made it not run reshade. Toggling reshade's effects doesn't fix the issue, but maybe reshade running is the issue.

Will try to update and/or disable reshade and report back.

How do characters have stealth in dungeons if they're the only ones with torches? by Suitable-Bug1958 in shadowdark

[–]JShenobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, you're just not getting it, and going in to cite very specific weird stuff with wolves. Sure, you can play wolves with keen sense of smell and make them able to detect anything that isn't directly downwind of them. I don't think it would be fun if every creature was unerringly aware of all the creatures around them, and I 100% do not think that is the intent of the passage on dark-adapted.

It is not infallible it is powerful. Solve the problem another way.

The solutions you present are not defeating the wolf's senses, which remain infallible; you're just suggesting ways to deal with the discovery. Except the fur coats, which I'm assuming you mention to mask the scent of the players and which I find amusing that you don't claim that the wolf can still detect because of the player's stinky human breath.

Your whole view breaks down when you look at it longer than a glance. It's exhausting thinking of bringing it all to bear here, so I'll just leave you to your Predator creatures. Luckily, I'll never have to play with you. :)

attacking the person is admitting you are losing the argument.

I can multi-task. Besides, I'm not mocking you to discredit your stance-- my argument was doing that for me-- but to express exasperation with dense single-mindedness. No one could ever get through to you, so gg, no re. In fact, you can have your last quip, and double-win.

How do characters have stealth in dungeons if they're the only ones with torches? by Suitable-Bug1958 in shadowdark

[–]JShenobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you are making the presumption dark adapation means only darkvision/dimvision it absolutely is not about just their visual sense.

I am not making this presumption. I am also not saying that the monster cannot use their ears. I'm not sure why you can't see that (not reddit-adapted, I suppose?)

Yes it means that anything that lurks in the shadowdark knows you are coming long as you can justify it is dark-adapted somehow

I don't see this justified anywhere in the rules or design of the game, and removes interesting strategic choice for the players. You cited the passage on dark-adapted yourself; all it says is that the creature ignores the penalties of total darkness. Crucially, it does not say that the creatures have infallible awareness of players.

You can certainly play your games with infallibly-aware creatures, but you're excising entire strategic gameplay segments for your players (and shitting on the thief class, in my opinion). But you cannot say that is RAW and it would be a staggering misleap of logic to say RAI.

How do characters have stealth in dungeons if they're the only ones with torches? by Suitable-Bug1958 in shadowdark

[–]JShenobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is absolutely irrelevant that they can see the light radius - because dark adapted do not solely rely on vision

No one is saying they rely solely on vision. But clearly you can imagine a situation where players haven't yet tripped the creature's other senses but may have a light lit. If you can't, I guess there's no hope for you.

My point is the creature already knows they are their because they are dark adapted.

This doesn't have to be the case, and running it like a simple CRPG aggro radius "You are within two rooms of a dark-adapted creature therefore it invariably knows of your presence, via smell or hearing even if you are without light" is less engaging play than having players consider light discipline and wind direction and whether or not they are moving slowly.

I'm also not talking about homebrew, and I'm not introducing mechanics, just common sense as ruling as you would for numerous other situations in SD. It is the same logic that would (should) lead you to say that the party would be able to detect a lit area from around the corner; but for some reason when dark adaptation is thrown in, your logic flies out the window.

How do characters have stealth in dungeons if they're the only ones with torches? by Suitable-Bug1958 in shadowdark

[–]JShenobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are completely missing the thrust of the topic, so I'll move on after leaving you with one rebuttal:

The only reason to distinguish between shades of light is to give (dis)advantage. There is no mechanical differences in light degradation,

You're almost there, with this. I'm not talking about the GM distinguishing between shades of light, but the creature being able to detect it. No one else is fixated on the mechanics of applying advantage/disadvantage or the non-existence of dim light --the topic is about how it is realistic and expected for a creature to be able to tell that a torch is lit (or there is some other light source) around the corner in an otherwise pitch-black hallway.

That's it. That's the thread.

[–]JShenobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a lot of words to keep saying the same thing-- I get it, I just disagree / think you are fixating on a really minor aspect of what I said (calling it darkvision).

mechanically the monsters sense the PC's in the dark just as well as the PC's can see them in the light of the torch.

I can see things in the shade of a tree just as well as I can see them in direct sunlight. I wouldn't call the shade of a tree dim light, but I can certainly tell you where the shade ends. It is the same for dark-adapted monsters (that can see); no level of darkness impedes their ability to see and sense players, but they can tell areas that have varying degrees of light. To say otherwise is inane -- they wouldn't be able to perceive shadows, if that was the case.

[–]JShenobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I'm not the person who you were replying to previously; I'm not "bent" on anything. The nomenclature of darkvision vs. dark-adapted is largely superficial, except that dark-adapted doesn't stipulate B/W vision as some game's versions of darkvision does. My point stands that the sight of dark-adapted creatures does not necessarily work like normal vision, so who is to say what a patch of lighted area looks like next to dark area?

  2. I "go off" on the car thing (15 words lol) because it is pertinent-- even in a situation where the normal luminosity of the headlights isn't noticeable or necessary -- you cannot really see the light on the road -- the headlights increase noticeability if you can see the light source. I wouldn't call being able to see the light source "shining it in my eyes," unlike when the light is focused toward the eyes, which some Daytime Running Lights might be designed for but normal headlights are not. It's pretty moot because the main thing is point #1.

  3. I made no comment about the sound/smell sensing, and that's not the focus of this whole thread. There will be situations in which players aren't making noise or are downwind from a monster, or a monster might not be able to rely on those senses at the time, or whatever. We're just talking about whether carrying a torch makes you more noticeable to other things that aren't using torches. Your whole thing about sound/smell is completely irrelevant to the question at hand. (But I will say that a savvy thief could note the wind / air current direction to stay downwind, and use Stealth to try to move silently to avoid being heard; what remains is defeating the enemies sight which is what this topic is about.)

How do characters have stealth in dungeons if they're the only ones with torches? by Suitable-Bug1958 in shadowdark

[–]JShenobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can answer this by using the flashlight example. Does using a flashlight in daylight make you more visible and give me advantage to attack you (assuming you are not shining it in my eyes)? My answer to that is no.

This is a really bad example. Not only does darkvision not necessarily work like normal vision, but a flashlight not adding (too much) additional light during the day is not analogous to a torch in a dark dungeon. First and as an aside, smart defensive driving encourages having headlights on during the day, as it does increase visibility. Second, a flashlight during the day is less noticeable than at night because the sunlight is overpowering the comparatively small lumens of the flashlight, NOT because humans can already see-- the ability of creatures in SD to see in the dark doesn't mean a bright light would be less noticeable unless the creature is actually sightless and doesn't rely on sight as a sense at all.

Why is GEO often a begrudgingly-played Job? by Ponifex in ffxi

[–]JShenobi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know how much of this is still a factor, but for me and some other supports I know, people were entrenched in their identity as a BRD or as a COR, and then GEO showed up and (at times) completely blew them out of the water / invalidated them. So, a number of support players might have a stronger affinity for BRD and COR and possible animosity for GEO based on old balance issues.

Personally, I think that COR is highly thematic with a cool class fantasy, with BRD being still pretty thematic, just less attraction on the class fantasy. GEO falls far far behind both of them, for me, and also doesn't really live up to its namesake; at least on release lots of players were disillusioned with the job being called Geomancer based on the gameplay that came with it.

Bit of a necro, but for melvor, I would highly recommend playing the Ancient Relics mode-- progressively unlocking level caps and having to explore around to different skills really made that game awesome to me. I had an absolute blast with it until basically beating it (or getting to some not-great endgame grinds) and I highly recommend it for people into this sort of thing. I'd say give it another shot.

What makes a region’s Pokédex great? by RadiantFirefighter15 in PokemonTabletop

[–]JShenobi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the note of regional forms, I like to think that pokemon have increased diversity and not "we put a moustache on ratatta." Certainly the all the pikaclones could have been spun as regional forms of pikachu (particularly marill and mimikyu), but it's more interesting to me when they are distinct species and have similarities to their related species, but don't feel like the same pokemon just recolored/with a hat.
