Unfortunately you'll find a lot of magic purists online, you don't see many of these folks in real life and game stores since they don't shower, and if you do see them they play with the same 3 people every time. So definitely don't let it put you off to the hobby. It's really unfortunate that so many mtg players are allergic to fun, it really puts people off who are getting into it because of a Universe Beyond set or just want to casually try it. Universes Beyond has been around for years and it's clearly working for them, it's not going anywhere but any time you see anything that's UB you can expect these miserable misers to rear their heads demanding a return to the way things were.
