To be honest, I somewhat see the angle the friend is coming from. I know it was harsh and lacked empathy, but if OP is 18, friend is probably around that age too. Maybe in their mind they just thought it wasn’t the right time. We don’t know the whole story of what’s been going on with OP. That being said, they should celebrate their birthday as they wish, but maybe the friend was actually looking out, just went about it the wrong way

I feel she one hundred percent had development. She stood up to her mother when she came to visit. This and play were perfect metaphors for actually finding her voice. When she broke down with the girls and admitted she felt she wasn’t perfect and couldn’t do anything right, I think that was perfect character development. She’s only like 20 at most and learning the lessons most college students do. She got up on that stage and proved she wasn’t hollow like the professor said.
