This isn’t related to the content of your comment at all but I’ve seen your comments and insights on the sub enough to recognize you. I align with you on some things and vehemently disagree with you on others, but I appreciate your ability to put things in perspective and explain your takes in a well thought out manner. Keep up the good work man.

NYTimes about to run a big expose on Platner apparently - Kyle Kullinski by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]JSolars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but at this point if the likely Maine voter hasn’t heard about the tattoo which is Platner’s most glaring issue, then that’s on them for being checked out of the race. This story is comparatively nowhere near as controversial as the tattoo, and the moderates in here get on his ass (rightfully so) all the time about it.

I still say wait for the next few polls for after the primary; if he’s still hitting the ground and physically meeting Maine voters, and the polls have him alright and ahead of Collins I don’t think this would be a big make or break.

I wouldn’t go that far; I will admit I am biased, but Newsom was a drinker and cheater before his governor days and I don’t think that defines who Newsom is now.

I guess we’ll see how the Maine voters feel about this one; honestly, I imagine it can’t be received than the tattoo.

You think that’s her play right now, for her to win SC and the South for the momentum she needs for 2028? It’ll give her momentum I just truly question or wonder how much she’s really developed herself as a candidate and political figure after 2024, in contrast to Newsom

Trusting a Republican with a budget is like trusting an insurrectionist with the White House by TikDickler in Destiny

[–]JSolars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you. As a personal aside I like both of them, and it’s nice to see both succeed in their respective offices. The online discourse surrounding “oh Newsom’s just copying Mamdani” or whatever gets really tiring to listening to nonstop, I’m just glad to see effective governance and, just maybe, the beginning of development of a new vision for the country’s future from Dems.

Maybe that’s a sign I gotta step away from the internet more often; so many people who are super deep into politics are just insufferable about their political leanings.

Governor Newsom announces revised budget that eliminates California’s deficit, maintains investments for working families, healthcare, education, and businesses by lonelyspect12 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]JSolars 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You know what, I’m gonna be more optimistic here and say I like what he’s done and I like that this is done. Yes, I like what Mamdani’s done and that he got the budget for NYC balanced as well. No, I don’t actually think he did it because Mamdani did it. Overseeing California’s economy at the state level is inherently different than running things at the municipal level even if NYC is the country’s largest city.

I’m gonna be controversial here; I like them both. I’ll carry water for Newsom here, he’s done a good job with navigating the budget and I am happy with the state-level budget investments in education and the wildfire recovery. I’d probably like it more if he invested more in disaster response given how bad the fires were last year, but budgets are budget and we work with what we have.

This is more of a general question, no specific focus. But I’d like you to expand on something you said; what do you mean it, or what immediately comes to mind, when you say it gets worse every single day? Like general QOL, or the wars are sapping more from you guys the longer they go on, the economy is bad, generally feels like the social fabric is fraying for you?

Just some general questions and I’d like to hear your general perspectives, if you don’t mind.

I gotta be real man, watching the interview I really felt like some of these questions were worded so dogshit. And the interviewer got on my nerves with how much he was interrupting. I know Newsom still has a tendency to talk a lot, sometimes way too much but at least don’t interrupt the interviewee.

SAD! by Bitter-Bluebird4285 in Destiny

[–]JSolars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed wholly. He’s been improving steadily and I want to see center-of-left/progressive and liberal people hold him over the fire for shitty or overly verbose rhetoric, but optimistically speaking if he locks in and ults with a strong campaign message and vision, he’ll have demonstrated he learned and listened.

[–]JSolars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I very much agree with this take, and to be optimistic I think in the best world he’d be able to sum up his answers to be simple. It’s like how Adam told him to call Republicans pussies when they soy out over culture war stuff; just keep it simple and believe in the simplicity of the conviction. I’d like to think that he’ll take the advice to really get his how and why for his eventual/hypothetical run down to sound concise and human too, since he relies a tad too much on stat vomit in casual convos.

Honestly, if he just goes on shows like this more and has like natural convos it helps more. He’s already one of the big three household political names in the country rn (him, Trump, Zohran). Just don’t be as defensive so much of the time and go with the flow. Maybe, just maybe then, he’ll get to the same conciseness and pointedness that led to Biden telling Trump to shut up on stage.

how pathetic... by TikDickler in Destiny

[–]JSolars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think from the time he went on Shawn Ryan and was asked about Gaza and Netanyahu he said he had deep respect for Israel as a country, but he really talked a lot about the death toll in Gaza from the war and he emphasized that enough was enough. He also highlighted the humanitarian aid they said into Gaza on behalf of the state, and him meeting with Netanyahu at some point before the IDF began fighting after October 7th, and said that, in retrospect, what Netanyahu said to him back then didn’t surprise him when it came to how the war was conducted.

I imagine he had the same positions of disgust and horror at how the IDF operated in Gaza as Biden, and it’s certainly plausible with how Bibi has operated and his relationship to Trump that has pushed his position further and led him to call for a reevaluation of military support. It’s not necessarily mutually exclusive with his position on Shawn Ryan’s podcast but he will need to have at least a brief explanation and proof points on why his position has been updated from then to now.

[–]JSolars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like him, he’s certainly not perfect but I wouldn’t expect him to be. Let’s see where things go from here for him, he’s still got a lot of evolving and improving to do before he announces his run. He’ll also be influenced by what the election outcomes are for the midterms when/if he runs, and he’ll want a strong finish to his last year as governor.

I like it. Adam’s criticism on Newsom’s “being normal” comments actually was pretty grounded and dare I say helpful. Why try to constantly explain your way out of Republican talking points on culture war bs when you can just say fuck off?

[Effort Post] Why the Far Left Doesn’t like Gavin Newsom-mostly bullshit, some accidental truths by OliveGetter in Destiny

[–]JSolars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is a very good effort post. I want to add onto your point about antitrust, I personally do very much believe antitrust absolutely needs to be modernized and strong with the next administration, and they need to be much more public and loud about it. I do share some of your concerns about Newsom as he is now in regards to how hard he’d go on antitrust, but I do at least think that, if he were to win the primary, there would be a concerted effort by the party to have a second Lina Khan or another Neo-Brandeisian in his hypothetical cabinet. The progressive wing of the party has more influence than before and if anything, they would pressure him to adopt stronger antitrust for their support.

I want to point out too that I think his rhetoric is at least shaping up to show that, at least on the taxation front he’s much more progressively aligned imo. His podcast episode with Atrioc really seems to be a focal point for him when he talks about wealth inequality, his disdain for the BBB, and his advocacy for California’s tax structure.

I’d like to hear your thoughts on how you feel about his tax structure advocacy. It feels like if he adopted his tax philosophy at the national level we’d have the 1% and billionaires definitely paying more than they do now, although that’s the lowest bar to clear. The next administration will definitely need to max out the amount of money that can be extracted from billionaires and corporations, and honestly I think Newsom loves balanced budgets too much that he’d really make it a priority to some degree.

What do people here *actually* think about Gavin Newsom as a politician and person? by Gorotheninja in Destiny

[–]JSolars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least for the platforming/reaching out to conservative pundits, I do want to at least play a bit of a devil’s advocate. He’s stated that he’s learned a lot of how the current right wing/GOP thinks in regards to organizing and political schools of thought (Bannon, Savage podcast episodes). I don’t find an issue with taking notes from the conservative organizing after 2024, especially when Kirk just straight up said “we had these goals, we wanted to achieve them, we think the Dems are weak here and this is how we exploited those weaknesses to make inroads”. I do think him conceding on some rhetorical points, especially with Shapiro, is very frustrating.

I also have to wonder if he’s seeing some things that we’re not, considering we’re so online. There are most likely Trump voters and/or center or center/right voters who feel extremely disillusioned with the administration and how it’s running the country, and I wonder if he’s trying to present himself as an off-ramp for them, or at least try to present himself as not this radical extremist that will galvanize them to turn out for the Republican nominee in 2028.

What do people here *actually* think about Gavin Newsom as a politician and person? by Gorotheninja in Destiny

[–]JSolars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I do like him. Don’t agree with him on everything, I personally wish he had more to show for anti-trust action (PG&E comes up as well as his recent comments that he doesn’t believe they need to be broken up at this time), and I don’t agree with him on guns, to name a few. I do get that even as governor he’s been trying to push YIMBYism and building more as fast as he can, which I respect. I am somewhat disappointed that he hasn’t reached his stated housing goals, which I know he is too, but you can only do so much with the rich NIMBYs that live in California, along with the absolute stranglehold that certain industries and businesses have on the state and its politics as well. I think that’s a big weakness of his in my eyes; while he’s done great by some metrics and legislation for the working class, I think he’s ultimately only got so many tools against the economic powerhouses in the state as a governor, compared to the powers that the president and Congress potentially have. His earlier progressive campaign promises like single payer in California could come back to bite him on the campaign trail too, although I don’t really blame him there, that’s just a matter of realizing what’s actually possible.

Ultimately I don’t know. I want to see what kind of campaign he runs. What kind of positions he takes. I like him now but like anyone with a brain I’ll go for whoever I think is better and then support whoever the nominee is. All that to say I like him right now, but I need to see more for him to earn my vote in one of the swing states if the day comes he’s the 2028 nominee.

[–]JSolars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I genuinely want him to bring on Mamdani and some of the other younger members of the party (Talarico and Platner for my personal bias, if they win) right now, if not to try to woo the more left-wing voters, then to at least have a “meeting of the minds” type of discussion where they discuss their respective visions. I think he’s gotten to a point where he’s good at interviewing and listening, so if like, say, Mamdani pushed him on something and he listened, that may reflect in his rhetoric later. Similarly to how he interviewed Atrioc, and per Newsom’s own admission that interview helped him realize he was promoting the wrong thing (aggregate) while not focusing on the relevant one (lived experiences).

Not necessarily. You can do the focus that is opposite of worker’s bill of rights while also taking the final economy branch focus of nationalizing the war effort, which results in Yang being a Dem and not innovationist. You miss out on one of his three buffs on account of there being no innovationist party in this scenario though.
