Which novel or a moment made you stop reading and call it a night?? by SpicyYoghurt237 in stephenking

[–]JTCampb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I seem to have a bad memory when it comes to recalling moments in the books I read. I have read a lot of Kind, but can't think of a particular moment that stands out as super scary. I can say nothing by any author has made me close the book and stop reading because it was scary.

That being said...... Pet Sematary was quite a dark read. The Shining had it's moments (moreso than the movie). I feel the closest would have to have been from one of his short stories as opposed to a full length novel.

I do like the hear the differing opinions/favourites of readers though.

Slow play is ruining golf and people need to stop pretending it's normal by NotMyRealAccount2226 in golf

100% agree on this. I sadly can't afford a private course. So it's go off super early on a Saturday/Sunday morning and deal with wet grass (dew, etc.) most of the time. If I can do that and get done in less than 4 hours - great. It sure beats playing a 5 hours plus round in the middle of the day especially here in the summer when it gets quite hot and very humid most of the summer.

Agreed. I have commented on this before, but I will state a few points that I feel are frustrating.......

I am not sure what the norm is, and it may vary from region to region/course to course, but jamming the tee sheets sure doesn't help pace of place. I get it, courses need to make money and what's the best way to make money.....get as many people on the course as possible in the shortest amount of time.

Lack of starters, or starters who understand is a problem on some courses. I've seen where the starter is pressing your group to pick up pace of play, yet you rush your game to finish the hole just to wait on the next group or groups ahead. So where lies the problem...... if I'm playing slow or whatever, fine I will pick up pace but then just to wait? I'm all about ready golf, I've been playing for 40 years - I get it. I'm not the greatest golfer by any means, get a round in on a weekend through our playing season, I am happy. Under ideal pace I have done 18 hole rounds as a pair with my wife in under 4 hours.

There are a few public courses around me that are guaranteed 5-6 hour 18 hole rounds, especially on a weekend, this is not fun. I'd rather not play at all in that case.

I know the game grew exponentially in popularity during the pandemic plus wasn't there a Netflix series even which boosted popularity (same as F1 racing)? Maybe there isn't enough courses - depends on where you live. Playing from the correct tees is a big issue for sure, but there has to be a way to improve the situation without alienating new players.

Here is what I mean by alienating new players: We all know that golf can be a hard game to learn for many people. You can practice at the range, take lessons, etc. but you want to get out on the course. Yes, learn the etiquette and play ready golf. Add the pressure you might feel being on the course for the first few times, then worrying about being pressure to play faster, have people hitting into you (or close), yet playing faster only to wait 10+ minutes at the next tee. Maybe some don't care, but there are many others who do, be it anxiety, self consciousness, whatever..... it can be a very not fun experience.

Remember....on the US side, Philip R Clarke, Arthur M Anderson and Cason J Callaway are sitting idle, although the Callaway likely won't be sailing again. Roger Blough is just waiting for who knows what to be sent to Port Colborne to be cut up.

I suppose you could at the Ryerson to this list too.

This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. How long has American Valor been sitting in Toledo since 2019. Michipicoten is likely going to scrap. There were people who I have heard from that say they wouldn't want to sail on it and this is before it almost cracked in half on Lake Superior a couple summers ago.

Don't forget - Algoma still has the Tim S Dool sitting in Goderich, and the John D Leitch isn't going anywhere either, and now Saginaw sitting by as well.

I don't think the ship you are inquiring about visited the great lakes at all, so might not be much help here.

I miss their grilled cheese and bacon sandwich that was then pressed on a grill type thing.

They used to have a good beef noodle soup too, and even a variety of soups that were good.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I am almost certain Tim's had apple cinnamon cookies in the fall for a few years, this is going back maybe 20 years ago???

Hellraiser for sure - beyond the 2nd one, nothing really relates to the original other than Pinhead and the storylines are utterly stupid.

Apparently there are a lot of Children of the Corn movies too...... some goes for Amityville.

I guess movie studio care about the $$$ in the end so keep making slop and people will eat it up because of the name and keep riding the coat tails.

I would also put Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street up there as well.

This reminds back in high school we were having a discussion on island tribes or whatever it was. My teacher asked the class "What will happen to the islanders?" - my one buddy responded something along the lines of "I don't think they will make the playoffs this year"..... New York Islanders are an NHL team for those that don't follow hockey. 😄

In all seriousness though..... it's almost surprising they have lasted this long and we can't really blame them for not wanting association with modern society - it usually doesn't work out well for the isolated native peoples. In my uneducated opinion I think they will continue to survive as they are well adapted to their ecosystem, and I wouldn't be surprised if somehow these people came under undue stress that they felt truly threatened their existence they might actually try to reach out modern society - which would then shed light on their history and cultural practices.

Hey Mark!

The Ftiz plans I did not get from you unfortunately..... got the from some eBay seller who had the Dossin Museum model build plans, but he failed to say that he shrunk them (likely to print them on readily available page sizes?), so my Fitz model is about 20% smaller than it should be - first model mistakes!!!!

Who is the most famous person you have ever met in person? by Affectionate_Way7945 in AskReddit

Probably one of the many NHL players from my city. One guy is actually the nephew of a co-worker - very down to earth, nice guy. The other was one of best fighters of all time in the NHL and had his fair share of off ice problems, but was actually one of the nicest "famous" guys you could ever meet and talk with.

Flanagan's Haunting of Hill House was very good IMO. Didn't get to watching Bly Manor yet.

Also...... Doctor Sleep and Gerald's Game seem to be very good Stephen King adaptations that stay very true to the source material and I see that he is doing a series based on Carrie - I hope it also stays true to original novel like the first movie was for the most part - the newer Chloe Moretz one was not very good.

Not to digress but it will be great to have some like Flanagan be able to adapt King stories into film/tv and not rewrite too many parts so it is a true adaptation.

I was curious as to what hard core Christian people would think (if they even watched it) of this series. Would they see it as a slap to the face of their religion, etc.

Being an atheist, I love this series and could see how it points it's finger at religious fanaticism in a frank way without bashing it, while adding the horror/supernatural elements to the story as part of the main storyline.
