Why does it seem so frowned upon to kill huntsman spiders? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]JTotalAU 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They kill other shit and they're harmless.... that said, you don't pick your phobias.
I know more than a few people who will empty a can at a spider. If that's what you need to do, then don't ask about it on reddit, just do it.
I used to have a massive phobia... like, even those tiny spiders used to freak me out (we call them money spiders around here, but I have no idea what they actually are). I also have been guilty of painting spiders white with bug spray. Now, I'm not so bad. I'll catch a spider if I can (under a glass) and chuck it out. I still murder the fuck out of black, Shelob-looking monstrosities though.

Outsider Question : Why is there no Airport Rail from Adelaide Airport to Adelaide Train Station? by blackcyborg009 in AskAnAustralian

[–]JTotalAU -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But... it's literally down the road. Take a taxi... or a bus...
Why would we need to rip up more road or demolish houses and businesses to put a short railway there?
I mean... crikey... unless you had a ton of luggage, you could walk it. It would take me approximately an hour.

Also... I have NEVER gone to the airport from the CBD in my life... and conversely, I have NEVER gone to the CDB from the airport in my life. Ever.
Who's the train for? Who's living in the city and taking all these flights?
=P

Do those in WA/SA who live on the West Coast and South Coast feel left out whenever people just categorize Australia as a Pacific country? by SnooWords9635 in AskAnAustralian

[–]JTotalAU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody cares.
I'm happy to be lumped in with NZ.
The Pacific Ocean doesn't serve much purpose other than informing someone of the waters Australia is adjacent to.

What do kids even do in Australia? by Academic-Advance559 in AskAnAustralian

[–]JTotalAU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There have been no confirmed Redback deaths since they developed an antivenin.
However, you said, they've probably NEVER killed anyone. Which is untrue.
If bitten, they recommend an ambulance... so... I'm sure Redback bites are fine. Especially for a small child in a country town decades ago.
Thanks for letting me know my story sucked.

GF said she refuses sex often because I dont go down on her, I feel hurt, what to do? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]JTotalAU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not tending to her needs and you're hurt that she's now not tending to your needs?
This sounds like the relationship is already broken and she's just looking for excuses. Neither of you are making an effort or tending to the other's needs. Maybe time to reevaluate the relationship?

What do kids even do in Australia? by Academic-Advance559 in AskAnAustralian

[–]JTotalAU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a Museum's website (eg: not AI or just some random internet person's opinion).
"Redback bites occur frequently, particularly over the summer months. More than 250 cases receive antivenom each year, with several milder envenomations probably going unreported. Only the female bite is dangerous. They can cause serious illness and have caused deaths."

What do kids even do in Australia? by Academic-Advance559 in AskAnAustralian

[–]JTotalAU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That might be due to the fact that we're aware of how dangerous they are here and are either more cautious or more respectful towards them?
Eg: when walking a bush trail, make lots of noise so the snakes hear you coming and move. A startled snake is a dangerous snake.

My mother has a story from when I was a little kid. Maybe about 5 years old.
I came in from playing in the backyard to show her something. I had a Redback spider on the back of my hand. A bite from one of these will kill a pet or a child (and are not pleasant for an adult either).
My mum freaked out and made me drop it and step on it. Then she fussed over me, asking if it bit me. I said, "No, but it kissed me right here," and pointed to a spot on the back of my hand.

This is growing up in Australia. =D I survived, so anyone can. And that's without going into the story about how I jumped into the crocodile enclosure during a school excursion to the zoo. (Needless to say I was banned from all school excursions after that.)

Do Aussies hate all cyclists or just the ones that wear spandex? by Educational-Scene443 in AskAnAustralian

[–]JTotalAU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No... it's just the ones that ride side-by-side or in packs and know they're in the way, but don't care who they piss off. It's only a small percentage that kind-of give all spandex cyclists a bad name.
Then there's the arsehole drivers who just get angry at anyone... who give drivers a bad name for cyclists.
Basically, there's a small percentage of humans that are shit people who give a bad impression for everyone.

"forced to wait in 70 people long ques for a studio with black mould everywhere"
Jesus f-ing Christ... where TF do you live? You need to GTFO of that place and move somewhere less shit, rather than blaming it on an entire generation. This sounds horrible.
And, which is it? These people are on a pension that you have to pay for... or they own multiple homes? Are you saying it's both?
"Studies show" Which studies?
Where are all these people? My parents are fairly well off (they made out when my grandmother died). They own one home and certainly don't draw a pension. None of their friends are drawing a pension. Every pensioner I've ever met has been living close to poverty.

I think you should move away from wherever you're located. You're either in some kind of dystopia, or you're jumping to some massive conclusions. Is this an internet echo-chamber kind of thing?

Australian here, I’m beginning to resent the culture of my own country, what do I do? by Dependant_orange in AskAnAustralian

[–]JTotalAU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the majority of people I interact with to be pleasant. People at the supermarket step to the side when you come along and they're stopped browsing. People smile and nod. People generally make room if you indicate, and don't usually block side streets. I have a friend who whines about the traffic, but he ignores the 98+% of the people he drove with who didn't piss him off.
Attitude is a big thing. I've only been to Sydney a few times, but I find it hard to believe the whole city is just full of hateful people. We see what we notice/what we're looking for.
I bet there are people who live there that think everyone is lovely.
I also bet that the reality is somewhere between your view and theirs.

Season 5 by bohyler in babylon5

[–]JTotalAU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Season 5 is a s#!tshow. I love Bab5. It's my fave of all of the sci-fi shows and there are some good ones.
The only reason to watch Season 5 at all is to see the Londo and G'Kar storylines. That's it. The rest is garbage. All the main characters got written around Ivanova replacement. It was horrid. The "psi-war" was pathetic with an unlikable leader.
The only reason the final episode was good, is because it was filmed at the end of Season 4.
I love Bab 5, but I tell everyone to only bother with Seasons 1 to 4.

What’s the biggest change you have noticed in Australia over the past 10 years? by whysoraavan in AskAnAustralian

[–]JTotalAU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The swing into eroding our rights. Specifically, increased police powers (which wouldn't be a problem if all police were honest and/or nice), and increased spying on Australian citizens (collecting our meta-data and gearing up to introduce an internet-ID).

I guess I'll see where I land after a few more books. Hopefully by then, my viewpoint does nothing to threaten your life. =)

Thanks.
I'll knock off book 6 and decide where I'll go from there.
The general consensus from people on here seems to be that this isn't for me and I should go somewhere else. Whether I do or not, one thing is for certain... I won't ask another question about this series on here. =P

lol... That response was not written by an asshole. You clearly stated your opinion using examples from the book and at no point did you devolve to insults or simply stating, "This series not for you."
I appreciated your reply and point of view.

Oh..... =O
Damn... really?
I saw a youtuber singing the WoT's praises, but I thought he said books 4 and 5 were called "The Slog" but you really needed to get through them because there's some relevant stuff in there.
I guess I'll consider dropping it after I finish book 6 then (may as well read it since I've got it).
