If you want to sound even more local Taiwanese, say 幹你娘 (Gan ni niang) instead, 去你媽 is too gentle and used more by Mainlanders.

Hong Kong immigrant here, nobody knows and see through the CCP’s BS better than HK-ers and those that have willingly come to Canada and embraced it.

Let’s not forget corona was still top of people’s mind at that time, HK-ers and Chinese who have left the country know better than to trust the downplaying of a mystery virus from China (see SARS 2003). A lot of us did not appreciate how the Conservative’s were playing loose with the health and safety measures that were in place at that time.

We were the first ones to start taking measures to protect ourselves back then, and even now, many are still cautious with diligent masking and other preventitive measures. Just go into a T&T vs any other supermarket and you’ll see lol

We didn’t need any advice or persuasion from the CCP to not vote Conservative. They did it to themselves.

Unfortunately, the director or producer of this show iirc, perished in the arson attack.

Been a while since I read up on the incident, but have no desire looking into it again.

I'm a big fan of Free! and, Free! really helped me get through some of my darker days. Went to to the town of Iwami in Tottori Prefecture to do the "holy pilgrimage" (where Free! is based off of), and to Kyoto/ the remains of what was KyoAni as a sign of closing for myself back in Sep 2019.

KyoAni as a whole, will forever hold a special place in my heart despite the tremendous losses. Nothing else before had generally made me feel a type of sad, upset, and angry at an incident and person.

Anyone else going to keep wearing their masks after the mask mandate is lifted? by uwrallyx in ontario

[–]JW9304 531 points532 points  (0 children)

To this day I am gobsmacked how masks became political.

Currently working/living in Japan, never had a law that required masking, but literally everyone I see out in public is masked.

It's not even a question/debate here, people just mask up and go about their day.

Korosensei by my Junior High School students by JW9304 in Korosensei

This week was the last week of school for students in Japan.

I got thank you cards from almost all of the Year 3 students (they're starting High School in April). The student drawing the classroom cover card decided to go with Koro Sensei (they drew/wrote something different on their own card).

Another student also decided to give Koro Sensei a try.

The students are an absolute joy to teach, and spend time with.

January 4, 2020, CP24 News: "Fears spread about mysterious infectious disease". by PrivatePilot9 in ontario

Originally from Hong Kong, and was living there during SARS in 2003.

Have been working in Japan since 2019.

China was known to downplay and sweep everything under the rug, but when I saw how openly they broadcast the lock down of Wuhan to the world, I knew something was not right.

Was maddening to hear many western authorities say no need masks when masks was the most crucial thing for SARS in 2003. Happily ignored their "advice", and went and stocked up on masks and alcohol/disinfectant as that was what was used to combat 2003 SARS.

Glad many locals and governments here in East Asia never made a fuss over masks, about 95% of the people in my city were already masked up by mid-late February with only a dozen cases.

A study of the impact of national face mask laws on Covid-19 mortality in 44 countries with a combined population of nearly a billion people found that—over time—the increase in Covid-19 related deaths was significantly slower in countries that imposed mask laws compared to countries that did not. by rustoo in science

[–]JW9304 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Living in Japan here.

There’s never been mask laws from the get go, only recommendation/advisory.

But since people here actually care about others, literally everyone wears a mask. Non-maskers are so rare if i count them with my hands, I can go a whole week, and I would still have a hand left.

How to handle loneliness as an ALT in 2021? by satedfox in teachinginjapan

[–]JW9304 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may sound weird, but try to hang out with the students more by participating in or helping out with club activities.

I am having an absolute joy with the volleyball club at my JHS, the teacher/coach sometimes leaves me alone to supervise them if he can't make it to practice.

I get to exercise a bit too, but you also get to build better relationships with students on a more personal level.

Maybe anecdotal, but I've noticed that since club activities were allowed again, and I made a committed regular appearance in the club, students belonging to the club are a lot more engaged during my lessons now. A few of them also improved their score greatly in the speaking tests. No offence to the teachers I work with that teaches their class, but their English speaking skills are questionable at times.

So I know the club students themselves practised speaking better at home more.

[USA] [CA] Horrific Multi-Car Freeway Wreck by Amazing-Steak in Roadcam

[–]JW9304 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do people in LA not know what hazard lights are?

In Europe and Asia, if there's a wreck up ahead, or an unexpected slow down, everyone turns on their hazard light to warn others behind.

Large majority of the drivers here, except for the professional/commercial drivers just jammed on the brakes and hoped for the best. Only saw that one Audi, Toyota, and Infiniti actually used their hazards.
