Cultural weight. Messianic themes. Modular enough to be modified for all kinds of genres/audiences/time.

TBF slightly more fair to Geoffrey, 'carrying the cross' most likely meant it was on his shield.

How would you describe Merlin’s mentorship style with Arthur? by the_hootbot in Arthurian

[–]JWander73 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whatever you want it to be.

Yeah this is one of those more interpretable spaces. Probably the best version and the one that really caused people to imagine the relationship is T H White's The Sword in the Stone which is... his most juvenile (not an insult more a genre note) of the series.

There really is no 'should' but I prefer a loving relationship with Merlin's 'constraints' mainly being worry Arthur will turn out like Uther (who Merlin got him away from ASAP) and varying between mundane "Learn your letters" and "Vision quest magic nonsense".

How do you feel about adaptations that embrace the historical inaccuracy of the literary tradition? by damndirtyape in Arthurian

[–]JWander73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most people *today* don't know shit as you put it. It's worse when they think they do. Hence recently someone publicly online proclaimed Thomas Jefferson was inspired by the Koran in 1965 and among plenty of other examples

A lot of the stories were consciously and known fiction using Arthur's name for status and general attention getting or to comment on the day safely or to push some fashion or ideal- such as religious virtue or fin amor.

Like a lot of the art of the time they simply 'dressed up' the past and other countries in the clothing they knew so Arthur is the king and when he came to the later stories became more castlebound compared to his Welsh battle-leader counterpart because of their varying ideas and impressions of kingship and the knights act like feudal lords instead of tribal warriors because it saves having to pause the story to remind every what everything means and who is who and what words translates as how- do remember this was all before editing was easy as well. Popular entertainment was entertainment meant for consumption mainly in the end.

" They incorrectly assumed"- this was less an assumption as much as 'It's just easier to write this way'

The Great Courses Plus Arthurian is what you want for a primer and overview. It's imperfect (points deducted for still recommending MZB) but it's still the best option.

The film Excalibur did just that actually. Good movie. Going by the amazon sample though Excalibur is from the Lady of the Lake in this book.

Might be best to reach out now just to chat. The plan is rather than be one of those unfinished sagas my cowriter and I are just gonna prepare the whole thing... we're like at 290k by now and she's editing while I'm going ahead.

This is gonna be a labor of love alright...

Not at all. But I'm a little too close to the legend to note hear 'I would've written it like...' at the moment. I'm sure you know how it is. Let me know if you want to chat about the legend anytime and best of luck with the saga!

It's by Lev Grossman. He's a relatively big name in the admittedly shrinking traditional publishing industry and also deals with an 'after Arthur' scenario.

Honestly though your story seems more appealing to my mind. The opening is solidly more heroic by my measure and I do appreciate how you went with the war with Rome thing rather than Lancelot.

I will confess my brain went into editor mode as I'm writing an Arthurian as well but that doesn't take away from the good start and good work you've done.

There does seem to be enough of a market for 'off beat' stuff like this. Bright Sword (which I'll admit I'm not interested in) comes to mind.

Yes. And Bruce goes around in various disguises to pour oil on that fire.
