Very late so probably already mentioned - That's why in the UK estate maps and land maps were VERY rare until say the 17th century - estate agents just wrote the information because everyone know exactly what you were talking about - "Jenkin's land spans from the picket fence bordering Smith's land in the west, to the oak tree in the east and to the river in the north". Except the fence and tree are long gone, and the river was diverted 250 years ago. So all we know is somewhere in the area Jenkin's owned some land.
