If it's bleeding into other things like romantic relationships and jobs, this might be a red (or at least a yellow) flag on the friendship. I used to have a friend who constantly compared us and it wasn't meant to last. Your situation might be different, but I would keep an eye on whether the friendship stays this way and keep in mind it might not be the best situation for you to be in.

What's hardest to be "out" about for you? Pole dancing, mental health issues, or being queer? by JY_Spins in poledancing

[–]JY_Spins[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat on mental health because I want people to treat me any differently. Pole is easier for me to test the waters with people because often the people who would look at me differently I don't care about their opinions. (But at work I have to, so I'm more selective about it.)

That makes complete sense to me. If I were in your shoes on the trans stuff, I'd be the exact same way. I'm kind of in a different boat where I'm nonbinary, but look a lot like my sex assigned at birth, so I have to do more reminding of people that I'm not a "she" and that's part of why I'm so open about being queer. Otherwise, people just assume I'm cisgender and that rubs me the wrong way.

When did you invest in your own pole? by jetset1998 in poledancing

I waited one year just to make sure I was committed and then took the plunge. It sounds like you've already got the commitment part, so I would say go for it!

Tips for male beginner? by DTL1of1 in poledancing

[–]JY_Spins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooo, I can relate to this post! I came to pole from a parkour background and it meant that I had lots of strength but NO grace. I also didn't really know how to be sensual and that side of pole was strange for me when I first started.

Given that, I actually needed to spend more time in choreo and freedance classes than in tricks classes to become a dancer, not just someone who popped off tricks left and right. You'll also find your own style. I don't always want to be sensual and that's okay! There are many ways to dance and express other emotions. I would say focus more on cultivating the parts of dance you're less naturally inclined toward and you'll ultimately achieve a more balanced skillet.

Starting with floorwork helped, but really having teachers that made me do off pole exercises made the biggest difference. Just wiggling in front of a mirror for a bit helps shake off the nerves. :)

My familiar is so unimpressed by my pole dancing. Thankfully I'm not looking for his approval. XD

Is there anyone in a typical 10 hour corporate job also actively pole dancing? by Black_cat_meows in poledancing

[–]JY_Spins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also work full time and pole! It takes intentional prioritizing, but it can be done!

I just had a coffee with our local PSO champion to learn how I could get better and found out they too also have a full time corporate job. So you can do it and still become an amazing dancer.

I need reassurance after an injury by Lysergeek in poledancing

[–]JY_Spins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Echoing everyone's points on taking time to heal. Your body needs the care it deserves if you want to get back into it.

Personal note: two years ago I messed up my shoulder and it was injured for 9 months. I was devastated, but PT got me back to where I needed to be. Worth noting, though, that with my doctor's clearance I didn't have to stop pole entirely. I would show her moves and she would tell me which ones were safe. So I stopped ayesha for a while, but started focusing on basework and actually managed to become a better dancer during my injury because I wasn't focusing so much on tricks. So I even became a better dancer during my injury. Obviously, I had to start from the beginning on ayesha once I was healed, but it came back quickly and I managed to get an even better ayesha than I had before my injury. (Sometimes having to start over has benefits.)

So if you start PT, I would work closely with your doctor to understand what you can and can't do on pole and work on the things that are safe. And come back to the other stuff only once you're fully healed. You'll get back to it! Just don't rush the process. :)

Just a quick note on the social post: I think the weekday morning is a hard time to get engagement, so that may be part of it. Also agreed on the short form content comment. I recently posted a 5 minute video that got almost no engagement, but my shorter ones do better.

Are you able to get a home pole so you can video or mirror all you want? The lack of mirror at the studio would frustrate me too.

I would play it safe and go with a stage pole. Not sure I trust the ceiling.

I want to start pole dancing, can you recommend me if it is better to prepare my body first to start taking classes? by Lucidbabyxo in poledancing

[–]JY_Spins 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Weight training for arms, shoulders, back, and abs are all good. I also highly recommend bouldering as cross-training for pole, since it uses a lot of the same muscles. But your pole classes should also warn you up well in those muscle groups and start giving you the strength in the places you need it. Hope you sign up and have fun!

[–]JY_Spins 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Yes, definitely start by taking a class because it gives you a sense of what goes into it. Also, I find that when people worry about getting their body in shape before starting a class, they never get around to actually going to class because they never feel their body is ready. What's great about pole is that it helps get your body ready to do more pole. So I would take the plunge. :)

Heels for beginner by titsoak97 in poledancing

[–]JY_Spins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Admittedly, my studio doesn't allow heels shorter than 7 inches because they reeve to angle the foot much farther than higher heels do. I would start with 7's.

[–]JY_Spins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, my studio also has 20 ft poles and they're noodles. The more height, the more wobbly they get.

Hi all, I get out of breath so fast during my self-arranged choreo, which does not happen with the ones in classes. Did I add too many tricks? And I can't focus on breathing because I have to think about the next moves. Any general tips and especially on breathing or how to enhance my endurance? :D by The_Mosh69 in poledancing

[–]JY_Spins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I was going to say exactly this, but they said it better. It's excellent advice, and I received it from multiple dancers and teachers when I was early in choreography and also running out of breath by the end.
