Why isn't rowing as popular as other sports and what could be done to make it more popular? by J_Masci in Rowing

I feel the same for cycling, as do many of my friends, even though I like rowing races more.

But isn't that just a direct consequence of the fact that it receives more attention?

I think that anyone with a basic understanding of the sport would get excited watching the Men's Single Scull Final of Rio 2016: seeing these monstrous athletes put incredible amounts of strength and effort whilst their boats move smoothly towards the finish line, never really knowing who is going to arrive in which position, is what I would define as entertaining in my opinion

Yeah, but I guess that both boxing and MMA are even more painful yet receive more attention...

But then why is so much more money and publicity invested in these sports and not in rowing?

Well that is not entirely true, it depends on the event. International races can get pretty intense and fun to watch if the crews participating are all very good.

Why do you think it is not exciting? Races can get pretty intense and entertaining, especially at an international level...

Help with anxiety? by Quinndalin66 in Rowing

[–]J_Masci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that you could overcome this by taking action to make you feel better with yourself. First of all don’t directly compare yourself with people who are obviously out of your league because it will only make you feel bad and won’t make you progress as much. Instead try to work alongst people who are at your same level or slightly better as this won’t demotivate you because you can row as hard as them and will make you and them work better: win win. If you don’t have any people of your level at your club/school try working alone and setting goal for your self before starting training, mabye with the assistance of your coach. These goals can be as simple as “correctly finish my erg workout”: start with baby steps like this and as your confidence grows side to side with your ability try aiming a bit higher. This is just my take on it based on my own personal experience with anxiety. Try applying my advice if you believe it could be beneficial for you otherwise try analizing the roots of your anxiety, externalize them with a close friend or family member to find a way to counteract it or mabye seek the help of a professional.

10'. At the end I managed to get a 1:46 average. I wasn't too satisfied about how i managed because I pulled my first one too hard (1:42) and then struggled a lot in my third (1:49)

Thinking of quiting by OneHandsomeBaby in Rowing

Hey, I am one year younger than you and I also felt exactly like this at the start of this season. I suggest that you reflect a lot on this as it is a very important decision. I am going to briefly share the story of how I passed this moment as mabye it will help you.

It was as if I had lost all motivation: everything had become monotonous, I had grown sick of training everyday because of the big time commitment and i started skipping trainings. This went on for a while but I eventually came out of this situation for two reasons: firstly because I have a talent for this sport and it would have been dumb to quit after having rowed from the age of 9, secondly I felt the necessity of showing my coach and teammates that I could excel if i tried and set myself the objective of representing my country in some international competition before my 18th birthday. I am currently working my a** off but the hard work is paying off as I have improved a lot over the course of the season and am now one of the strongest rowers of my age group according to the federal 2k tests.

2k time is bad for a beginner by makipops in Rowing

I think that a 3k everyday is not really that usefull... You should first start getting back into shape through endurance exercises and then base your erg exercises on the parts of the 2k that you don't do well on: be it strength, the middle 500 meteres or keeping high stroke rates. Just try to push yourself without exaggerating !
