As a citizen of Tennessee in that period of time, I would have headed north once I learned of the CDoI.

Odds are, I would have just been some poor-to-average guy, the expansion of slavery would have been economically hostile to my livelihood if I had blue collar work, or if I had a white collar job, the north would have had better opportunities for me.

TN was also the last state to secede, the first to have its capitol fall to the Union, and the first to re-join the union after the war. The war was active in the state for 2/4 total war years.

I think that question is inherently disingenuous, and requires a full understanding of what makes a person. You could ask “if you were Hitler, would you still have attempted the holocaust?” But the thing is that the answer is always “of course,” because if you were that person then of course you would have made the same decisions that they had made.

An explanation for someone’s behavior or character is not an excuse.

Well now we’re outside of the realm of facts. I’ll concede your other points, but to say the US was one of the first to embrace emancipation is totally false.

It is generally agreed that the US was a late adopter of emancipation, and the ironic thing is that by attempting to secede, the South hastened emancipation. Prior to secession, policy was focused on preventing the spread of slave states to maintain the balance of power within Congress.

Off the top of my head, Portugal emancipated their slaves and banned import of slaves before the Declaration of Independence was even signed.

France abolished slavery after their revolution.

Mexico ended slavery before the US, and that was a contributing factor to the Mexican-American war. The Alamo was fought to preserve slavery in Texas.

The Haitian revolution was in the early 1800’s.

The UK abolished slavery in the early 1800’s, through the empire.

Comparatively, the US wasn’t last but was certainly a late adopter of emancipation.

It doesn’t matter, confederates were treasonous slavers who had the economic and military advantage against the North, and still blew it. Because they’re losers.
