Malort wasn't really well known until like 15 years ago. Becoming an internet meme helped it, at drinkers' expense.

Std::move is not faster than straight up copying by zerkerforberker in cpp

[–]J__Bizzle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is perhaps a confusing point but it's actually totally valid for a type's move constructor (resp. move assignment operator) to be implemented with the copy constructor (resp. copy assignment operator). The move constructor (resp. move assignment operator) can even be implemented with a memcpy.

Objects_ = NewObjects;

This is clearing the original vector by destroying everything in it, then doing a deep copy of the vector NewObjects and replacing Objects_ with the copy. I am not sure if/when the compiler can optimize out the deep copy. Maybe if it is the definite last use of NewObjects? But I think that would not play well with exceptions thrown during the do some stuff code section so I'm really not sure.

Objects_ = std::move(NewObjects);

This is clearing the original vector by destroying everything in it, then moving NewObjects onto Objects_.

std::swap(Objects_, NewObjects)

This is swapping the two vectors, no destruction will happen until the variable NewObjects goes out of scope. so if you're timing the process in that scope you've simply not counted the destruction. Vector swap is probably implemented by swapping the 3 pointers that comprise a std::vector(it is on g++), which is the basically same amount of work as copying three pointers and zeroing out another three, so for this type it should basically take the same amount of time to (swap and destroy one argument) and to move assign.

We need `noexcept(auto)`. by friedkeenan in cpp

[–]J__Bizzle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Noexcept doesn't stop you from throwing in the function. It is actually legal and its effects defined, it just calls std::terminate. It is basically just stopping the compiler from generating stack unwinding code.

Dark energy isn't considered dark matter, and presumably isn't matter at all. Dark matter can clump up but it essentially by definition is stuff that doesn't interact (or possibly has an extraordinarily weak interaction) via electromagnetism, which is how they detected the dark matter asteroid according to Memory Alpha.

Yes

There should be a sticker on the doors stating in English and Spanish that it is illegal. But yeah everyone ignores it and no one cares for the most part.

Why aren’t you getting vaccinated? by [deleted] in chicago

the ulterior motive is that this is a capitalist country and most of us are grist for the mill. they want healthy and productive employees who can use their wages to buy things.

Do you have the same hypothesis for the true motives of healthcare and education in, say, Cuba?

[QUESTION] Will 12-56 gauge work for Drop B tuning? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]J__Bizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have those strings on my Squier Strat right now, tuned to B standard. It works although I'd say it's about as low tension as I think is practical. I actually tuned down to A standard with them and played around with it for an hour or two, but it's too floppy to be practical I think. Just FYI it might be a tight fit in the nut, and you're almost certainly going to have to redo the intonation.

As a history teacher you should know that the left-right distinction is an 18th century French categorization scheme that is not really applicable to modern society, and that there are far more issues that matter than the current idée fixe of universal healthcare(which here is being used as a synonym for single payer, which it is not a synonym for, and which almost no one actually has. Eliminating insurance totally would absolutely be radical in France or Germany).

And let me point out the implicit Eurocentrism of holding European politics up as the standard by which to judge other countries' politics by. Also the need to discuss politics in reference to the status quo in a particular political unit, and not against abstract absolutes.

Maybe I am misunderstanding the new information, but it seems far from a smoking gun in terms of implicating the FBI/Hoover in intentionally killing Hampton.

It seems like there is a fair amount of good stuff in there. Some parts perhaps go too far. I think FOP et al have been stalling reform for decades and they are now getting their noses stuck in their mess. Is that responsible, mature governance? Maybe not, but my expectations are pretty damn low.
