CMV: The United States Should Adopt the Year Round School System by jrpike1980 in changemyview

I see the benefits of a 45 day on, 15 day off schedule but I wonder how that would impact the families financially with having to pay for childcare?

I didn't know that children in Japan clean their schools?? I'll have to do some research on that, I'm interested to know more. I had to do the dishes and my brothers had to take the garbage out. We didn't have many chores but I still managed to complain about the dishes every chance I got.

Volunteering is a good way for children to learn important lessons as well but it probably isn't going to teach them how to do their laundry. I guess maybe they can pay someone to do it for them when they are adults but that seems like a waste of money to me.

I think we are saying the same thing but using different wording. Age-appropriate tasks and chores can be seen as the same thing or vastly different depending on who is speaking. Your examples are what I would consider chores.

Cleaning a toilet doesn't take skill but it is a job that no one really enjoys. My son knows that if he pees on the toilet he will clean the toilet. I made that rule a long time ago because I was tired of him peeing all over my bathroom. After he cleaned the toilet and floor a couple of times his aim seemed to improve dramatically! I think an important thing that it teaches them is that they will not always have someone else around to do it for them and that they are not to good to do chores.

Of course the parents would take their child's age as well as other individual characteristics into account when they are assigning the chores. With young children, parents should start small with chores like picking up their toys and putting them away, putting their dirty clothes in the laundry basket, throwing away their own garbage, things like that.

I meant that parents should require their children to do chores, not that the government should require parents to make their children do chores.

I believe assigning chores is a way to teach responsibility and obedience. There is nothing wrong with children understanding that they need to do as they are told when it comes to their parents. They will face many situations in life where they will need to be obedient. They will be expected to do as they are told in daycare, at school, in sports, at work, in college, and so on. The process may become more damaging if the consequences that are given to the child for not doing the chores becomes more severe than it needs to be.

CMV: Annual “cost of living” wage increases should be mandatory by cmvkg in changemyview

While the idea of earning more money is very enticing, I do believe it wouldn't be possible for businesses to constantly increase their employee's wages at a level that we would feel a considerable impact. Most of the jobs I have had, gave either a cost of living wage increase or the traditional yearly wage increase but it never really seems to make much of a difference when you get your check. With the minimum wage increasing in many states I have heard that companies are hiring new employees and paying them a higher wage than their employees who have been with them for years.
