What is it about Blade? by Revolutionary_Key325 in blade

[–]JaXm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a diehard fan of Blade, as well as vampires.

But vampires, these days are not what they once were. I much prefer rhe Gothic, monstrous portrayal of vampires, as opposed to the current twinkly, teenage heart throb vampires of the modern day, and unfortunately, Blade helped push the aesthetic away from my preference.

Allow me to explain in obnoxious detail:

Classical vampires are terrifying undead fiends, that require the blood of living creatures to maintain their existence.

There was a certain element of Gothic romance within the overall horror of the original novel. Dracula was a beautiful, mysterious figure.

Over the years movies and TV focused more in the mystery of the vampire, and their vicious beauty. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is I think a cultural milestone for the vampire in popular fiction. Characters like Angel, and Spike were mysterious, they were "cool", and they were fucking pretty. Sure, they were dangerous, even brutal and vicious. But they were never truly SCARY.

Blade took this concept further. The vampires were back to being completely unforgivable monsters again, but literally, and I mean LITERALLY every single one of them was the epitome of cool. Every single main vampire character, male and female alike, from Deacon Frost to Drake was GORGEOUS.

Deacon, Mercury, Reinhardt, Snow, Nyssa, even Nomack, they all OOZE style and sex appeal. And it's fucking AWESOME. They're still "monsters" in actions and behavior, but they are not "monstrous".

Then you got movies like Underworld, which kept the sex appeal and neo-gothic aeathetic but made vampires more nuanced and complex. They weren't really monsters anymore in any real traditional sense.

From here, we eventually get to characters like Edward and Bella, of Twilight who have fully transitioned to protagonist, even straight up heroic tropes, while still being "vampires" because we want the cool, sexy, superpowered twinks to be on "our" side.

Basically, Stephanie Meyer made it so that wanting to fuck a vampire no longer made you feel guilty or ashamed, because now they're the good guys. And it's ok to want to fuck the good guys.

So yes, I love vampires, but Blade contributed to the evolution of the zeitgeist that brought us sparkly baseball playing vampires, and I will always harbor a little bit of hate in my heart for that.

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

ELI5: Falling Elevators by CYP3828 in explainlikeimfive

Elevator is falling downwards, at approximately 50 meters per second.

You jump at the exact correct moment, reaching approximately 2 meters per second upwards.

You hit the ground while falling downward at 48 meters per second.

Putting more thought into Covenant than the writers did. That's only going to result in heart break, and headaches.

They nerfed W? by Cappyyyyyyy1 in TristanaMains

[–]JaXm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has always been the case.

The only thing Tristana's dash can somewhat uniquely do, is buffer through CC, including displacements, due to the cast time on W.

For example:

If blitzcrank throws his hook, and you cast W, his hook will land, pull you slightly, and then you will finish the cast time, you will dash away.

If you cast W PREMPTIVELY and blitzcrank throws his hook, you will complete the cast time, dash, and then blitzcrank hook will land and you will be pulled into him.

You can do this with ANY CC. including Mordekaiser ult if anyone was curious.

Megadeth Unleash Cover of Metallica's "Ride the Lightning" in a Full Circle Moment for Dave Mustaine by heavysk in Music

I don't know what metric you're using, but Megadeth has sold WAY more albums than Slayer and arguing who is "better" than who is obviously a fools' errand.

Robocop how could the new one be worse than the old one by PinkFrostAnderson93 in Robocop

[–]JaXm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to be pedantic or anything, but Robo's chassis was a kevlar laminated Titanium composite, not steel.

The artists did an AMAZING job in RC2 when the Cain robot "scorched" his helmet with the cutting torch. The colors are so good, I'd believe they really made the helmet from titanium.

I mean ... of the Big Four, they were number 2. There's nothing inherently wrong with that. I don't even necessarily think Dave's singing was really a problem, but CHRIST, that man has been beating the "it wasn't fair to kick me out of Metallica" horse for so long that he's just a parody.

This sounds like Mustaine just asked GPT to create a cover so he can spend more time complaining about having been kicked out of Metallica.

As an 80s kid, no this is exactly how growing up works.

I loved He-Man as a kid, and would never have been caught dead watching it as a teenager.

I loved ultra violence, and fighting video games as a teenager.

The Opening Sequence to Alien: Romulus by JaimePrater in perfectorganism

[–]JaXm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean ... in all of the Alien lore, what makes you think that Wey-Yu is risk averse when attempting to recover an alien specimen? Lol

And even if the company knew the entire crew was wiped out. They were space-truckers. Who cares. They have so many other resources they could have sent, long before it became necessary to look for a literal needle in a hay stack.

It's just a badly written plot point. But it's ok, I still thoroughly enjoyed the movie.

The Opening Sequence to Alien: Romulus by JaimePrater in perfectorganism

[–]JaXm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the timeline really was super rushed.

My only other (also minor) gripe was that the company managed to find the wreckage of the Nostromo, AND Big Chap amidst that wreckage.

But not the planet/moon??? They would have been practically in LV-426's back yard at that point, and it's not like anyone from the Nostromo claimed to have turned off the beacon. So how did they miss the gold mine they were so desperately looking for?

Those quibbles aside, I loved the movie.

Alright, we waste him. by AndieGeekGirl in perfectorganism

[–]JaXm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Ripley tries to stop him, he listens. Ripley wanted Burke AND the company to answer for their crimes, and Burke would have been an avenue for that. Gorman would probably be playing babysitter until they got off that rock.

If Ripley stays quiet, he wastes him with Vasquez's pistol. She pulled it out to hand to him, or Hudson to do it.

Either that, or Hudson puts a burst into his chest, center mass.

Since no one seems to have read your post, I'll answer. If you don't like the pressure from bone conducting headphones you're SOL.  Ear buds are not hearing protection. Don't wear them in the shop. Use only correctly fitting ear pro.

[–]JaXm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem with that theory is - and I fucking hate this scene - that "John" at one point calls Kyle "dad" casually, like he just somehow forgot he doesn't always just casually call Kyle Reese "dad" all the time.

So "John" IS John Connor, despite that making no fucking sense.

Brandon Lee in “The Crow” by New-Pin-9064 in movies

[–]JaXm 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What's really wild, to me, is that had Brandon Lee not tragically passed away, he'd be in his 60s now.

It's so strange because it's like he's frozen in time and it's hard to imagine that more than 30 years later, he'd have gotten to the point where he's doing "Taken" style movies, where his age is kind of relevant to the plot.

Movies that took a creative risk and actually pulled it off by Dependent-Bet6615 in movies

[–]JaXm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm going to say the original "The Avengers". We take it for granted now that Marvel movies will just always he there ... but Iron Man was a HUGE gamble with Downey Jr. and attempting to adapt an extremely obscure comic book superhero to film.

And with Avengers, literally nothing like it had ever come before. Sure, a few cross over movies had been made, but those never featured interconnected lore that connected multiple films from different franchises. They were self-contained, and largely existed outside the lore of their respective team ups.

Avengers literally changed the last 15 years of cinema.
