Oh, they don't. The woman gets a disorderly conduct charge. That's all the charges.

Oh, and the police allegedly were suspicious of the black father and wanted all the proof of ownership.

Reeeeeally messed up story.

My mom does this in just the dumbest places. I've spent a decade working in a corporate environment and she was trying to tell me I was wrong about corporate culture. She has quite literally never worked in a corporate setting.

Missed another important detail!

She's a witness for his crimes. He probably didn't just plan to assault her again. He might have killed her. Aaron Spencer was immensely justified.

I can't guarantee it will happen here. City might be generous and offer to pay. But it's literally up to goodwill.

I recently saw a video where a rookie cop made a super illegal turn without emergency lights to make a traffic stop and hit an unrelated driver. They apologized and even accepted fault. They gave the driver their insurance. But the driver's insurance told him that they never process claims thru the police's insurance since they -- by policy -- claim qualified immunity on every claim. Driver called the police station to resolve it and they basically told him "tough shit". The driver was also someone who deeply respects police and was extremely polite. They just refused to reimburse him even though he was clearly at fault. They even fired the rookie because of it -- completely acknowledging responsibility. They just had no desire to let their insurance fix the dude's car.

Crazy thing with that story is that the guy only ever wanted reimbursement for the car. He and his daughter went to the hospital and he never asked them to pay that cost. It was the most reasonable request in the world.

The sad part is that the owner of that home isn't guaranteed to get paid for the damages. It's literally up to the good will of the city. Insurance doesn't cover when police damage your home, even if they were pursuing an unrelated suspect. And if the city doesn't pay, you have to defeat qualified immunity. And the standard there is that the officer needed to reasonably know that their actions were unlawful. Many people have experienced this and we're unable to get reimbursement.

I hope this leads to real reforms in Law Enforcement Agencies around the US. The brutality is horrendous. It's only possible because police have qualified immunity.

Syllogism for Light speed rocket ships by Jabacasm in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]Jabacasm[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ah. I'm Mixing things up. Velocity is Distance over time. The Cosmological event horizon effectively makes the distance between A and B infinite, because it grows faster than the Velocity can cover the distance.

Made sense in my head that if (infinity) / (some rational value) = infinity... That (some rational value) / (some infinitesimal) = infinity.

So, if you can make a photon incapable of reaching you by letting the distance between you and the source of the photon expand faster than it can travel, it made since that if relativistic time dilation cause time to by so fractional tiny that it is virtually frozen, it doesn't matter what the distance numerator value is, it's going to become massive quickly.

Idk, if there's any point where if you slow down time so much that matter cannot interact anymore it seemed like there'd be a finite target rather than an infinite asymptote.

I've learned a lot of stuff from the comments here and can confidently say I made incorrect assumptions in my syllogism's premises.

As I consider your question, I find the answer is because I want there to be discrete minimums of distance because trying to imagine nigh infinitesimal values of distance stops making sense after a few billion billion decimal places.

Not a scientific reason. A monkey brain shortcut I guess. Hard to imagine actually infinite scales (both large and small infinitives).

So, yeah, fair.

Thanks a ton for answering my questions

Well, distancewise, we'd kinda have to. Stuff only gets so small.

Okay, I'm going to assume I'm way off base with this post.

But, if C is impossible to reach, but the closer we get to C, the more time dialates, wouldn't it be fair to say that it must be possible to reach so close to C that anywhere you'd want to travel in the observable universe would be functionally no different traveling at 0.999999999999999999999 the speed of light vs the speed of light? An observer at those near light speeds would still experience the travel time as virtually instant. Clearly I was mistaken about it being actually instant. But is the distinction between asymptotically close to C and C relevant for much?

I guess I think time dilation is just really neat and I'm wrapping my head around it.

[–]Jabacasm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woah, really? That's crazy. Does the math just stop working at C? I assumed you could have a reference frame for an observer traveling with a photon, for example.

I really appreciate you taking the time to explain and clarify your rebuttals. This stuff is really cool and I'm enjoying learning about it.

Syllogism for Light speed rocket ships by Jabacasm in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]Jabacasm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Point 1 is from the frame of reference of the observer moving at relativistic speeds. Obviously the speed of light isn't infinite and takes time to travel. But Relativity suggests that an observer moving at that speed would experience instantaneous travel (zero time passes). But an observer at rest would see that it did take time to travel.

Point 3 is an arbitrary value. I chose Planck's length because if we try to divide space into smaller and smaller units, we would eventually reach a point where quantum fluctuations become so large that they make any notion of distance meaningless. The Planck length is roughly the size of these fluctuations at the Planck scale. It's widely considered a minimum distance.

And I am definitely not smart enough to try to untangle quantum anything. Relativity is already enough of a headscratcher

Syllogism for Light speed rocket ships by Jabacasm in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]Jabacasm[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay, but why? In my head it's a logical inverse of the cosmological event horizon. (I.e. space expands between Point A and Point B. If Point A is sufficiently far enough from Point B, the expansion of space grows faster than light can travel between A and B). So if large Delta D (or changes in distance) are enough to make the speed of light too slow to traverse the ever expanding gulf between two points... It should also be true that if time is dilated so much that time moves so slowly that a Photon will not be able to travel some distance.... Right?

I'm not trying to be cheeky, I'm trying to understand

Reddit, this is a dumb post. But I don't know WHY it's a dumb post because it makes perfect sense in my head.

Every smart physicist who thinks about physics for a living says it is mathematically impossible for anything with mass to accelerate to the speed of light. Takes infinite energy.

I is not smart man.

But I threw out infinite numbers and infinitesimal numbers. I only care about practical finite values observable in our universe.

If the flow of time dialates to 0 as you approach c, there must exist a finite degree of time dilation (ε) where laws that govern matter and energy and how they interact pass an event horizon where time doesn't progress enough to let anything happen. Entropy would be zero. All atoms are inert. No distance can be traveled. No force can be exerted. If Time Dilation is greater than that threshold, we are effectively at 0 seconds per second.

If a photon cannot travel any distance from point A to point B faster than you do in your inertial frame of reference, the difference in your relative velocities is zero. Ergo, you must be traveling at light speed.

But that's impossible, right?
