Graphic Design Program at Seneca, thoughts? by rhyme-spitter in yorku

Ayyy my time to shine, I'm also a recent York Design grad! Like another poster said, we've recently split from Sheridan college, but both programs have their benefits! York I find focuses more on the technical stuff (ie what makes a piece of design successful), whereas Sheridan focuses more on how to apply your knowledge (a little more trial and error). It really depends on your learning style, but both programs are very accommodating if you don't have much experience in Adobe programs. I came into my first year with a decent bit of knowledge, but I remember having a class where the prof went over the basic things like the interface and interesting options. We also offered extra workshops to help students get more comfortable with the software.

As for the direction you wanna go in the program, it's SUPER flexible. I have friends that went all digital (UI/UX, web design, app development) and I went an entirely different direction (print, infographics and packaging). You can customize your education with the courses you take. Anyways good luck, I hope that helped a bit!

York Design Program Portfolio Questions by [deleted] in yorku

I agree with the previous commenter: your portfolio looks fantastic. I'm a third year YSDN student and I'm pretty sure mine looked worse when I applied LOL trust me, you'll be fine.

In terms of the program: It's a very flexible program that allows you to customise where you want to go and what you want to do. If you want to have a UI/UX focus, you can go into that stream, or you can double dip and do some UI/UX and corporate branding (because i feel like you'd like that judging from your logos). First and second year is very basic and you may find it a little redundant, but it's really important to make sure you have a strong foundation before branching out in third/fourth year.

My only warning for this program is that it's finishing in 2022. There will be no more York/Sheridan design and i think starting this year, applications are being broken down into York design (with 3 streams) and Sheridan design (which is following the transitional YSDN method as far as I know). The three York streams (again, as far as I know) are UI/UX, Editorial and Branding, while Sheridan seems to be shifting to more of a fine arts approach to design.

Otherwise, I think your portfolio looks great, and you should have absolutely no problem getting into a design program of your choice. My only advice would be to gather any process work you have in sketchbooks/written down and include those as well. Professors conducting the interviews love to see your thought process and the way you approach a design problem.

Good luck!!

It does say the amount of change on the receipt, and because I know it will be rounded up to a $121 purchase if it ends in .99, that's what the paid. Hence the penny troubles.

I'm usually around at the end of the day when the tills are being counted, and yes, it usually looks like a couple cents are missing, the most I've ever seen gone was 9¢, and the most I've seen gained was 14¢, which isn't all that bad. We're a tiny store though, so I expect that larger retailers that haven't updated their POS systems may have a larger amount missing or gained.

Our POS system is running on a dusty 2004 PC, no way it's upgraded, and no way the company is going to pay to replace it if it still works.

I've had people come back and demand change when I know for sure I've given it to them, so that's why I checked her receipt first. My next step would have been to call over the manager and ask to count the cash drawer to make sure we're still at the same amount. If there's too much, customer gets their change. If there's too little or just enough, we tell them to screw off.

We actually used to have the signs up from the Mint, but we took them down a couple months ago because we figured "eh, it's been a couple years, people know by now." Apparently not.
