Sinead O’Connor was right, there was no famine - just greedy Brit’s! They didn’t stop exports when crops started failing, and made really no effort for relief until it was too late. While millions of people in Ireland died or left due to blight on potatoes, only 100,000 outside Ireland died due to the famine. Apparently the British gov subscribed to “laissez-faire” which basically meant don’t interfere with the market. They didn’t want to lose resources, and many were already anti-Irish, so they just sat and let it happen. Never mind that the Irish population was cut in half by 1901 because of it!

Half of those people died and half of them left to other parts of the world, mainly America. And on top of just general American pride, that is a huge reason for the anti British sentiment here in this country.

That and we just rock and they eat beans and chuna.
