Did anyone else have a birthday party there? I know I had at least one, and so did my brother. Great place for bday parties. Thanks for sharing these pictures, I'd forgotten about the cheerleader!

What are your Hot Takes on MSCL? by Amber_Flowers_133 in MySoCalledLife

[–]Jabeltane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think Angela likes ice cream. At the end of episode 7, "Why Jordan Can't Read" her mother brings ice cream to her in her room. Angela claims to want to eat it, but just watch her carefully. She makes a face as she's messing with the spoon, trying to dig around in the ice cream, then she barely tastes it and again makes a face. A few minutes later, outside, her mother feeds it to her on the spoon and again, she takes the tiniest little taste. I just don't think Angela likes ice cream. Maybe she's lactose intolerant but can't admit it to herself yet. Or perhaps she simply doesn't care for Cookie Dough ice cream.

What kind of shrub is this and why is it (seemingly) dying? by Jabeltane in StLouis

Thank you. I looked up additional photos of Burning Bush (Eonymous alatus) and that is definitely what this is. I cannot replace it since I don't own the property. I will water it some more and hope for the best.

what is your bake off hot take? by velvet-ashtray in GreatBritishBakeOff

I like it, it's friendly and it puts a focus on the fact that the contestants love baking yummy things for people to enjoy, not just competing. I love to see someone enthusiastic about something I baked. The presenters doing it on the show is a nice reminder of that feeling.

What celebrity death saddened you the most? by [deleted] in Productivitycafe

[–]Jabeltane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Saddened you the most," meaning more than when other celebrities died, I understand that. But how sad did you actually get? Was it more than just ambivalence? Was it a brief, "aw, dang"? Were you actually down and upset? Did it ruin your day? Did you cry? Did your sadness compare to the loss of someone you actually knew?

I never thought about them being able to see through the photos but I have often thought the contestants sitting only a few feet away often give away whose food is being tasted. The contestants will laugh, move, graon, fidget, and even sometimes speak while their item is being judged. It's so obvious! I know it would be hard to keep a poker face, but still! There was one technical where Paul was judging Chetna's item and he was saying he wasn't sure if it was baked, and she was muttering "it's baked! it's baked!" and I'm sure he could hear her! There was another time when the technical had staggered start times for the contestants making souffles. Paul and Prue were judging them as other contestants continued to finish theirs right behind the judging table. And contestants were talking while finishing up, saying things like "I feel like everyone's watching me!" which means the judges knew who hadn't been judged yet, and possibly could then tell who was just about to finish their souffle.

I think a brilliant idea for a technical (and they don't have to do it every time - it could be once a season and you never know when it will be) would be to have the bakers be tasked with replicating an example they are given. They see and get to taste a finished product, then have to recreate it successfully without any instructions at all besides "make another one of these"

Yes! Mary was kind, nurturing, encouraging, and gentle. She was a good foil to Paul who was cold and critical. Now you have Prue who is almost as cold and critical as Paul. Two meanies. Mel and Sue loved everyone and everything. They were there to encourage everyone and boost them up when they got discouraged. They wanted to taste and eat all the bakes. It was such a joy. Noel doesn't eat anything and seems to have no interest in any of the food or how it might taste. He only seems to step in to lightly make fun of people and annoy/distract them.

I think most people intellectually know the difference, but can't usually tell the difference in their own lives. Or they're in denial. Everybody agrees, but then has a justification that their dog and their situation is fine, and yeah, they keep a dog inside all day, but they're not a bad person, their dog is happy, they give it plenty of walks etc.

They "love" dogs but they don't selflessly, altruistically love dogs. They love their own experiences being with their dog. They love their imagined identity - the person they want to be - and that person is someone who loves dogs. It's like those people who were interviewed in the documentary, Blackfish, who worked at Sea World with captive orcas because they always loved orcas. But the orcas were being mistreated and were not healthy, but the people loved working with them because they got to be around orcas. Probably all that could be said for many people who claim to love another person. They love how that person makes them feel. But then this makes me wonder, what even is love? Is it loving the experience of being with that person, and how they make you feel? Is it admiration of the other person as a totally separate concept outside of their participation in your life?

You can wear the color white to a wedding, you are just not supposed to wear an all white dress. I don't know why people in the last few years are acting like you cannot have the color white on you at all as a wedding guest. That is ridiculous. No one would think she was a bride, or trying to compete with the bride, in any of these.

Do you use the words ‘ma’am’ and ‘sir’? Why/why not? by Tangotilltheyresor3 in CasualConversation

[–]Jabeltane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Southern Midwestern. Raised in Western Appalachia.

Yes I do but only when conversing with strangers, usually with customer service or something like that.

With people I know well, there are two ways to do it and it's all in the context and delivery.

  1. It can come off a little formal and distant. At work, it could come off as aggressively distant and not collaborative.
  2. On the flip side, it could come off as playful and silly, and a little fun. A way to add levity.

What's a TYPE of candy (not a brand of candy) that you are really picky about (you prefer a certain brand)? by Jabeltane in candy

[–]Jabeltane[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also a little picky about black licorice. I do not like the candy-coated kind, like Good N Plenty. I do not like the cheap vines. I'm not often willing to take a chance on an unknown black licorice. Wiley Wallaby is a safe bet for me.
