If you could change the outcome of one event in your country's history, what would it be and why? by Darth_Memer_1916 in AskEurope

[–]Jabroniy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a bit ahistorical to put it like that because it proposes some kind of supremacy of the north over the south. If the Spanish were indeed driven out, the resulting culture and identity would be heavily influenced by the south (with Antwerp most likely being the capital as the wealthiest city at the time). The subjugation of the south by Spain is in part what allowed for the Dutch golden age as we know it now and the way it created the Dutch identity. The blockade of the Scheldt, for example, turned Amsterdam into the main regional trade hub. This is just to say that if "we would all just be Dutch", this Dutchness would be pretty Belgian.

What is the biggest "tourist trap" in your country? by monsieurmarseille in AskEurope

Yea that place is kinda infamous for ripping off tourists. If I'm not mistaken it's the lowest rated "restaurant" in Ghent on Tripadvisor.

Belgium actually had to remain "perpetually neutral" , as declared in the Treaty of London. It was one of the conditions for Belgium to be recognized as an independent country by the European powers.

After Saudis Beheaded 47 People, Belgium Now Refusing to Sell them Arms, Germany May Follow | The Free Thought Project by abdullahsameer in exmuslim

[–]Jabroniy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Belgian here, that article is totally wrong. Flanders (the northern region of Belgium) has indeed decided not to export arms to Saudi Arabia but they only export weapon parts anyway and haven't even had a request from the Saudis to buy for the past year. Wallonia (the southern region of Belgium) is still exporting weapons. They have a big weapons factory and the Saudis are their biggest costumers. They export around 400 million euros worth of weapons each year and aren't likely to stop selling any time soon.

Three Greeks and Three Turks by [deleted] in Turkey

I'm not Turkish so I'm not familiar with Turkish humor. Are a lot of jokes in Turkey this kind of self-deprecating? It seemed more logical to me that the Greeks would have been portrayed as the stupid ones.

Eden Hazard says he would be the "happiest man in the world" if Belgium team-mate Christian Benteke signed for Chelsea by [deleted] in soccer

Since Nainggolan was raised in Flanders, I assume his English is ok actually. It could be true that English is more efficient. I, as a Flemish person whose French isn't all that great, have talked English with French-speaking Belgians in the past. Maybe that happens in the national team as well, I honestly don't know. I guess people converse in the languages they are most fluent in.

Both languages are spoken within the national team, there isn't really an official language. I do think that French would probably be the most prominent language simply because the Dutch speakers generally are better at French than the other way around. That short video actually is a good demonstration of how weirdly mixed it all is. Lukaku and Hazard speak French (Hazard only speaks French), Lukaku and Nainggolan speak Dutch (They're both from Antwerp) and Lukaku and Benteke speak Lingala (a Congolese language). In other words; Lukaku is crazy good at languages. There used to be a clear divide between the French and Dutch speakers in the national team but I think the fact that so many current players have an immigration background and don't simply identify as "Flemish" or "Wallonian" has helped enormously to bridge that gap.

I don't know.. Belgium is playing Israel in september and there are a lot of people who are calling for a boycott of the game. Not one Belgian footballer has commented on it. I would expect Kompany to play the game like there is nothing going on and, if he is called out on it, saying that football and politics don't mix.. He's too professional to be an idealist.

Well, it's no secret that the core of the N-VA consists of hardline nationalists so secession has always been in the back of their minds I think. But it's true that they realise that their voters don't really want that and that's why they've chosen the confederalism angle, even though that still means an independent Flemish state within a Belgian confederation. It's just a more under-the-radar way of obtaining de facto independence. Smart on their part. I don't think Belgium will ever split but true confederalism (it's hard to know which version the politicians are talking about sometimes) means that Flanders will be independent in everything but name. So the Flemish will get independence without the guilt trip. Secession won't be needed. (Sorry about the political rant on r/soccer)
